I’m Magic Transit’s product manager.

Multiple tunnels are supported. Tunnels connect to anycast endpoints on the Cloudflare side, so each tunnel has reliability and redundancy benefits over standard GRE tunnels out of the box.

I’m curious to hear more about your use case — email me if you’d like. rustam at cloudflare

A plug for our (Cloudflare's) product — we support managed load balancing for UDP as well.

Can you get in touch? rustam@cloudflare.com. I’d love to get to the bottom of this.

Yes, Argo is very "SDN" under the covers :)

The data plane runs on our x86 fleet and its control plane is driven by custom route computation and propagation systems (discussed a little more in the post). We're excited to talk more about the technical underpinnings of Argo in the future.

Analytics (including some cool visualizations) are available in the Traffic Analytics section of the dashboard. There is always more we can do — drop me a note at rustam@cloudflare.com if there are specific additional things you'd like to see.

Re: tunnel reliability, sorry to hear you've had a poor experience. We've been working hard on hardening things like tunnel reconnection and would love for you to give tunnels another shot.

There are similarities between Argo and the Google/Amazon products you mention (as well as Azure's Front Door). All are aiming to solve similar problems inherent to routing on the Internet.

Re: enabling Argo at the network layer, watch this space :) I'd love to hear more about what you'd like to do such a product — email me! rustam@cloudflare.com

I’m the product manager for Argo and author of the blog. Happy to answer any questions!

We're also hiring PMs and engineers in each of these offices.

One production write up, compressing Kafka messages at Cloudflare: https://blog.cloudflare.com/squeezing-the-firehose/

“For our data zstd was giving amazing results even on the lowest compression level. Compression ratio was better than even gzip at maximum compression level, while throughput was a lot higher.”

Doing something with %%javascript would seem to get you most of the way there.

It’s possible to use a rope as protection without a partner. “Rope-soloing” is not uncommon on harder, more remote climbs.

People entering and converting through a purchase funnel?

This interpretation is linear going back decades, but looking at Apple OS history all up, you see them same hard fork/rewrite between Classic Mac OS and OS X.

Different people. Both of those acquisitions were in the Ballmer era.

Interesting. How much "smaller" is this in practice than a stripped down Linux image?

This seems to be the core point here — the US Code is a whitelist, not a blacklist:

"The government's position also produces a wholly different kind of absurdity: the idea that the First Congress might so thoroughly undermine fundamental principles of the Constitution that many of its members had personally just helped to write or to ratify. Its preferred reading of the law – which allows a court to confer on the executive branch any investigative authority Congress has decided to withhold, so long as it has not affirmatively outlawed it – would transform the AWA from a limited gap-filing statute that ensures the smooth functioning of the judiciary itself into a mechanism for upending the separation of powers by delegating to the judiciary a legislative power bounded only by Congress's superior ability to prohibit or preempt. I conclude that the constitutionality of such an interpretation is so doubtful as to render it impermissible as a matter of statutory construction."

ESR's takedown of Linus in 2000 is a recapitulation of this.

We (Spire, building breath tracking wearables) have an unfortunate amount of experience troubleshooting these issues. The developer tooling around measuring battery drain/energy usage is not useful for debugging this sort of thing.

We ended up wiring a disassembled iPhone to battery simulation hardware and are now able to measure battery drain while stepping through a debugger/pushing the phone through an integration test to identify power usage regressions.

Curious how other folks handle these issues.

The two cryptographers who originally publicly identified the backdoor (that Snowden eventually confirmed) work for Microsoft. So, the opposite of what you're insinuating.

Always possible MS is not to be trusted, but there's nothing on the record to support that.

To the author (or anyone else with experience): Any insight on why you guys chose Kafka + Secor over Kinesis?

To complicate things a little bit, Intel actually funded the research underlying this patent. This was the crux of the WARF vs Intel suit a few years ago — Intel argued they received a license to the patent as part of their grant.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1557536/intel-settl...

"Intel had supported Sohi's research with about $90,000 in gifts in the 1990s and argued it was entitled to the intellectual property that resulted from Sohi's work.

However US District Judge Barbara Crabb laughed Chipzilla's argument out of court and ordered the case to trial.

She said that the funding terms did not give Intel the right to use patents resulting from the work. However she said that any infringement by Intel was not willful because the funding agreements were ambiguous."

BigQuery's AWS analog is Redshift -- this is more akin to Tableau/Mode/Periscope/Chartio etc.

Remzi gets bashful hearing this kind of praise, but I'll pile on. He's had a profound effect on me in the classroom and as a mentor. A lot of you probably use techniques Andrea and Remzi were directly involved in advancing -- MapReduce, in-FS checksumming, etc etc.

This book was already the the core of the intro OS class when I took it several years ago; it's only gotten better and more complete since then.

Another hidden cost here (particularly if your main sales channel is direct to consumer) is shrinkage/fraud.

Consumer hardware is easy to purchase with a stolen credit card and fence on eBay.
