matrix87··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
I don't know if this has been posted already, but here is his manifesto

https://archive.is/2024.12.09-230659/https://breloomlegacy.s...

Sounds like both he and his mother were suffering from chronic pain and UHC dicked them around and refused to act in good faith

matrix87··on Breaking the 4Chan CAPTCHA
the blacked out minimalist aesthetic on this site looks really cool
matrix87··on How the Ivy League Broke America
I guess because he has some school from the northeast on his resume, he can write this far too long, hand-wringing blog post where he hyperfocuses on the value of his own credentials

This is the problem with the Atlantic: the authors haven't touched grass in a long time and it really shows

> It's not a surprise to me that the Kennedy family, being Catholic, the exact opposite of Buddhism in that sense, was always seen as particularly charismatic and alluring amongst political dynasties

I don't think the "technocrats" (or whatever they're called, "materialistic liberals", yada yada) are drawn to Buddhism and stoicism because of their actual content. Platonism is an extreme form of a detachment style philosophy. Platonism and Christianity are brother and sister

If I had to guess, they choose Buddhism et al because it fills a similar hole that Christianity filled, but it doesn't put them on the same dirty level that the masses are on

matrix87··on The case against living in the Bay Area, for ambitious tech people
If anything, it's a case for building more housing and public transit. Either this happens or it'll continue bleeding jobs to other metros

Having corporations bring jobs here with the current housing situation is kind of irresponsible. In the long run, if they spent some %age of money on yimby causes, they could save money by reducing the cost of living

matrix87··on What made Dostoevsky's work immortal
suffering can reflect virtue if it's a reaction to guilt, it just shows that people have capacity for moral self reflection
matrix87··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
> It starts with objectively good advice like "work out and go to the gym to get a good body"

This advice is given almost exclusively by men to other men. Similar to how women enforce toxic beauty standards on other women

And I mean, just because you don't see boners in films doesn't mean that society thinks that boners are bad. That's like saying that not seeing vaginas in films means society thinks vaginas are bad

matrix87··on Tech jobs are mired in a recession
I don't think "AI" reduces head count, I think software that's built correctly can reduce headcount (by a lot)
matrix87··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
> psychological castration

wow, I might have to try this in the bedroom sometime

matrix87··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
what makes you think that women don't know how to put men in their place?
matrix87··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
I'm not saying that merit in itself is a lie, I'm saying that when they retroactively use "merit" to justify decisions, it frequently is
matrix87··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
> and diversity hires

before the diversity hires, there were nepo hires. they didn't suddenly throw "merit" out the window to make way for diversity, it was already a lie to begin with

matrix87··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
I wasn't just talking about the GOP. Some of these people actually are ignorant, feel bad about it, and try to keep everyone else ignorant so that they feel less bad about themselves
matrix87··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
Good question... I did. But maybe I'm just lucky
matrix87··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
I feel bad for all of the boys out there who have the potential to specialize and get a degree but are surrounded by shitty, ignorant male role models. People who have no goals, no sort of ambition left, no desire to learn, they just sit around and pat themselves on the back for being unmotivated
matrix87··on M4 MacBook Pros use a quantum dot (QD) film rather than a red KSF phosphor film
I'm just worried about the burn in from coding

If you buy a macbook it's supposed to last a long time, but I'm kind of skeptical of getting one right when they release instead of a tried and tested IPS mbp

matrix87··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
> My take is that Bluesky is a nicer place than Mastodon.

For Mastodon, it's not just political, it's cultural

It's too out there for most people (as in, any random popular public instance you go to)

matrix87··on M4 MacBook Pros use a quantum dot (QD) film rather than a red KSF phosphor film
is OLED unequivocally better than IPS?
matrix87··on My Social Anxiety Cheatsheet for Mingling
> that's because you are naturally adept at socializing

People can be bad at socializing for a number of reasons. if you're depressed it can feel like just thinking that everyone hates you and never reaching out

At least for me it gets easier when you don't think, but this guy is giving the opposite advice

I'm sure this advice might be useful to some people but it's probably the opposite of useful for many others

matrix87··on The Therapist in the Machine
> The sentiment of "you're on your own, go talk to a wall and figure yourself out" is about par for the course regarding society's collective attitude towards mental health.

From my experience, if your default is to see everyone as untrustworthy, they'll reciprocate. If you see them all as trustworthy and open up to them, they'll reciprocate. Sure there might be a miscellaneous asshole who burns you once in a while, but it feels a lot better to just deal with them as they arise instead of putting up a permanent wall

matrix87··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
> Why shouldn't the worker that contributes more get rewarded?

Expecting work at 3AM is inhumane. Incorporating it into the incentive structure enables a race to the bottom that jeopardizes sleep schedule which has numerous health consequences

Also let's consider a bunch of these workers are on a visa and can get deported at the whim of their employer

> Plenty of unions practice institutionalized nepotism, with friends and family given priority in hiring

I mean, are you saying that the corporations they're negotiating against don't do this also? It's a problem anywhere where there's money

matrix87··on The Therapist in the Machine
> AI is meant to fill treatment gaps, whether their causes are financial, geographic, or societal. But the very people who fall into these gaps are the ones who tend to need more complex care, which AI cannot provide.

Do the people who propose this type of thing realize how insulting it sounds?

It's like saying to people "you're too poor for us to give a shit, here go talk to a rock for a little while, but pls let us record it so we can sell it to data brokers"

It just sounds like ragebait designed to get laypeople to hate the tech industry

matrix87··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
you see "merit based pay", I see corporations incentivizing shitty boundaries

if you adjust for hours worked, unionized employees will make more

matrix87··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
> because most developers don't see net gain to be had from unionizing.

you think visa workers have the balls to unionize?

that's what this is all about, finding people who can't say "no". if this round of visa workers wants to say "no" they'll just turn around and import a few more

In this case less wealthy are worth the same in terms of headcount. The only advantage wealthy have from a tax perspective is if they move and pay property tax elsewhere

> inadequate public schools invariably increase achievement gaps between socioeconomic classes.

or maybe the people with education and resources decide to volunteer and fix their own community?

if all of the greedy, self-interested, disengaged people decide to leave, how is that not an improvement?

matrix87··on CHP seizes cars after Bay Bridge sideshow with Flock Security data
> they care about using their jackboot to stomp anyone who gives the bird to their authority.

this isn't a protest, it's just a bunch of uncivilized people. If they don't want to follow the same rules as everyone else, then they shouldn't be allowed to drive
