mmm I do see your point. Notation can frame how we think. I hate to be that guy though...but I am a bit triggered by calling linear algebra LinAlg. It is like calling California Cali! Or Analysis -> Anal.
mathperson··on Chris Lattner Joins Google Brain
Yeah I am collaborating directly with the primary author...but I think you might be right I would have gotten more helpful advice for the graduate student who spent like a year writing this.

Good advice-I'll keep it in mind for future troubles. Thank you!

mathperson··on A Solution of the P versus NP Problem?
I am not really sure I agree. At least in my part of CS in the united states arxiv/google scholar are pretty omnipresent. Thank you for pointing me towards a new resource.

mathperson··on On Melissa O’Neill’s PCG random number generator
Could you share the paper? I mean if they were making a mathematical argument...it is kind of hard to do that without defining things..
mathperson··on On Melissa O’Neill’s PCG random number generator
are you joking? That is your example of abstruse mathematical notation? Some variables with names?!

mathperson··on A Solution of the P versus NP Problem?
1. no google scholar account 2. three publications on the arxiv.

I am willing to toss this out of hand...but look at yitang zhang or perelman. who knows? best of luck

I mean he also pokes fun at his children, himself, and posted a rap video about theoretical computer science on his blog. His blog is not exactly the Annals here... I think he is more than welcome to write about whatever he damn pleases and if you disagree you are more than welcome to argue in his comment sections (and more than likely lose)
mathperson··on Chris Lattner Joins Google Brain
I mean...you can't make math simpler. like...math is math. you can create resources that make it easier to teach math (and for the record high quality textbooks on AI/ML ABOUND). I think you want software and libraries so you can build things without understanding the math. To some degree this already possible (see my english major linkedin friends playing withs sci-kit etc etc). Fundamentally though, I think you need at least some basic understanding of the mathematics to interpret results/create new ideas. Arguing otherwise is like saying you can code without knowing what a queue is...I mean sure you can probably create something that compiles and runs but your horizons will be more narrow than someone with a full computer science education and grounding. just like trying to do ml without at least some understanding of the math is like a blind man trying to open a door.

case-in-point: I am on hn right now because my research is going badly because I am using another researcher's code and I don't fully understand the correspondence between the paper and the code. I am getting terrible results on some multi-class classification (i.e. approximately random). I am not sure if I am using some wrong parameters or because the signal I am looking for doesn't exist in the data. Not knowing at least some mathematics would make this a LOT harder

mathperson··on Khosla loses (again) bid to prevent public beach access
I mis-speak constantly. However..on further reflection you are probably right. We should ALL care..but the only people who do care in actuality will probably be the locals and the ever stalwart Surfrider foundation
mathperson··on Khosla loses (again) bid to prevent public beach access
I will never ever go to this beach. but I surf, in California. I swim in beaches, in California. I read books on the beach, in California. I care. And so should every other citizen of California who uses a beach anywhere. He is screwing us all. Other property owners have tried to do this..(i.e. malibu) and if one of them succeeds...we have a precedent..and once we have a precedent...it makes doing this much easier in the future.

mathperson··on North Korea now making missile-ready nuclear weapons, U.S. analysts say
For some reason HN isn't letting me respond to your next comment. I trust mattis because I have listened to him give many speeches and he struck me as a sober thinker willing to grapple with hard questions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKIJKQRb53o

My approval of mccmaster was originally based on his reputation stemming from his book "dereliction of duty" about how american generals mishandled vietnam. So that's why I trust them a little bit. But I do not trust them that much. I think they are intelligent people but...I think the pentagon induces a lot of group-think and intellectual momentum and suppression of dissent. When all you have is a hammer..the world looks like a nail. This is part of why I prefer having civilian Sec-Defs..and why it is important to have a president who is willing to cast aside the advice of his advisors..since in the past 15 years (though I liked ash carter and gates) a lot of that advice has been hawkish drivel. I really recommend a book called "The generals" by Thomas E. Ricks (on this topic). Tldr: don't trust the generals that much but more than trump.

For why I trust people (in general), I trust people who are willing to seriously consider the possibility they are dead wrong and people brave enough to seriously consider opposing views. I trust people who try to be rigorous in all things.

mathperson··on North Korea now making missile-ready nuclear weapons, U.S. analysts say
JFK almost launched off a nuclear conflagration and is considered one of the best american presidents. Donald Trump isn't even near average. These are impossibly stressful decisions in which literally millions of lives lie in the balance. I trust McMaster and Mattis..but at the end of the day the President makes the decisions. During the cuban missile crisis THE JOINT CHIEFS pushed HARD for a full out attack on the cuban mainland. JFK was almost swayed. I think it is very reasonable to ponder whether or not a 71 year old reality television star who is very clearly quite emotional...is capable of winning bets of this nature. Decision making under uncertainty is hard for even the best of us. I do not believe he is the best of us.
mathperson··on North Korea now making missile-ready nuclear weapons, U.S. analysts say
Honestly there have been efforts to bring north korea back into the fold (in regards to keep fanning the flames)..see the Sunshine Policy see the Kaesong Industrial Region see the Six-Party Talks. These have been largely ineffective and in some cases ended in North Korean military action (see Cheonan). It hasn't been all sanctions and war and bombing. It sometimes takes two to tango...
mathperson··on North Korea now making missile-ready nuclear weapons, U.S. analysts say
This is also a good point.
mathperson··on North Korea now making missile-ready nuclear weapons, U.S. analysts say
North Korea is erratic but I don't think it is erratic enough to be willing to turned into glass when it could otherwise keep doing its thing. The regime is not suicidal ( I think...)
mathperson··on North Korea now making missile-ready nuclear weapons, U.S. analysts say
I agree 100%
mathperson··on North Korea now making missile-ready nuclear weapons, U.S. analysts say
No it won't. The united states will never put boots on the ground against a nuclear capable state willing to use them. maybe it will end in a nuclear exchange by mistake..but if we (the human race) survived the cold war with a vastly more threatening posture this will be fine in the end.
