mathematicaster··on Prism
This is effectively standard across the board.
mathematicaster··on Prism
Pay to review is common in Econ and Finance.
mathematicaster··on Toward a Passwordless Future
they should have an activation factor that, e.g. bio or pin.
mathematicaster··on Toward a Passwordless Future
I don't want to use passkeys until I can chose and verify that they are device bound.
mathematicaster··on AI for real-time fusion plasma behavior prediction and manipulation
Likely due to using an LLM as part of the writing process.
mathematicaster··on Mitochondrial signal transduction (2022)
Not inherently. Just unexplained (and many think, with good reasons, unexplainable) by current physics.
mathematicaster··on A myopia epidemic is sweeping the globe
woah, what kind of sorcery is this?!
mathematicaster··on Financial Statement Analysis with Large Language Models
> how fast you can calculate , forecast, and trade on that information has.

How you can calculate fast, forecast, and trade on that information has

There. Fixed it for you. ;)

mathematicaster··on Model Explorer: intuitive and hierarchical visualization of model graphs
I don't see any reference to acyclic as a requirement.
mathematicaster··on How An ASML Lithography Machine Moves a Wafer [video]
To deal with that I often watch at 2x and scroll aggressively.
mathematicaster··on Using Make – writing less Makefile
Lost me at "making past from scratch".
mathematicaster··on How to learn chess as an adult (2021)
Yeah, I, too, practice my bball skills watching Curry's highlights ;)

Jokes aside, it's a fun channel. Makes me feel like I know what's going on in those games.

mathematicaster··on ASML and Samsung seal deal on 2nm chips
And for our next trick ... ... pattering to drive transistor switching rather than just transistor etching!
mathematicaster··on ASML and Samsung seal deal on 2nm chips
(relative) size (still) matters!
mathematicaster··on AI’s big rift is like a religious schism
Very approximately, (1) developing AGI is dangerous, (2) we might be very close to it (think several years rather than several decades).

TBH It surprises me how controversial (1) is. The crux really is (2) ...

mathematicaster··on Let's try to understand AI monosemanticity
I did a little spelunking some time ago reacting to the same urge. Tropical geometry appears to be where the math talk is at.

Just dropping the reference here, I don't grok the literature.

mathematicaster··on Photos of Roger Penrose’s journal
This, and more ..

... all the way out to the digital frontier of professional wacom tablets and 4 feet wide plotters. A fun hobby for some.

mathematicaster··on Real vs. fake AirPods with industrial CT
> We got a refund from the seller pretty quickly and they told us to keep them.

So they made some? Spent time/energy for science of course ...

mathematicaster··on Intermediate sci knowledge associated with overconfidence and negative attitudes
Top comment.

My adjacent refrain is "Science is not the same as people trying to do science".

mathematicaster··on Age of universe at 26.7B years, nearly twice as old as previously believed
IMHO this conflates model with reality. GR is a model.
mathematicaster··on Sam Altman: OpenAI is not training GPT-5 and "won't for some time"
Is there any indication from OpenAI people that there are low hanging fruits to be picked in this direction?
mathematicaster··on Double-slit time diffraction at optical frequencies
> Or in this case, interfere with themselves across two alternate times they could take on the same path.

This is gold.

mathematicaster··on Binance sees $2B in outflows as troubles compound
I am guessing it is because that was "real" money, and what remains is "generously" marked to market.
mathematicaster··on Typst, a new markup-based typesetting system, is now open source
An open source, very well documented piece of software that run on many different operative systems used for gate keeping?
mathematicaster··on A 50-year quest: My personal journey with the second law of thermodynamics
I have met several people telling weaker versions of that or similar claims. I believe them. A more accessible example is to intuit fairly early what computational irreducibility is. Typically one doesn't develop the language to be precise about these ideas until much later. That Wolfram had the correct language available at that age doesn't strike me as unlikely.
mathematicaster··on A 50-year quest: My personal journey with the second law of thermodynamics
Personally, I find it just takes the willingness to actively separate his exposition of the concepts (whether novel or not) from his self-evaluation.

It helps me to keep in mind his own admission of being quite egocentric (something like: "After all I am part of the club of those that named their company after themselves").

mathematicaster··on Humans retain ‘ancestral’ understanding of ape gestures, study says
I also find myself intuitively in the camp of your alternative theory.

Nevertheless I have an off the cuff comment to your question: Dune genetic memory is outside the bounds of our most basic understanding of inheritance because we do not know of any obvious mechanism to encode those memories into gamets in "one shot" (from direct experience to immediate offspring). Compare this with a very long arc over which a gazelle is born with brain initialized so carefully that it can learn to walk instantly, effectively having something that really looks like "genetic memory" of how to walk.

My confused ramblings aside, this to me suggests that it is at least plausible that such commonality among apes and homo exists. Now, providing evidence for it is quite a different ball game ...

mathematicaster··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
Tricky. In an environment where it takes time to collect information about competitiveness, updating of expectations is slow (and costly, because it is hard to be rational about this), there is a lot of randomness, and one's own competitiveness might be typically decreasing ... the slope of the expectation update might be not steep enough.
mathematicaster··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
Anecdotally, I have found this to depend on cultural norms. Southern European cultures appear quite a bit more touchy-feely than North American ones.
mathematicaster··on Neuropsychiatric researchers rethink what depression might be
