matchbok3··on Spain Announces Ban on Evictions
When you make evictions hard or impossible, the owners of housing will respond accordingly. That is, they will make rent higher, spend more time filtering applicants, etc etc. The solution is to build more housing, but the NIMBYs hate that.

So sad to see such a dumb policy get enacted that will undoubtedly harm young people who want get an apartment.

matchbok3··on Dots: Always-on agents
Do you want to ban almonds because they require a lot of water? (1000x more AI?)
matchbok3··on Post-Capitalism
> Most people don’t want this, and there will only be so long you can keep shoving it down their throats.

Believe it or not, the vast majority of people love free markets and the products that result from them. Probably because we have yet to find a system that does it better.

matchbok3··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
It is an example of how cities regulate housing, which I believe pushes prices up, not down.
matchbok3··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
You choose to own a pet. Building owners choose to set the rent.

What exactly is the problem, here? Other than a small group of people wanting special treatment?

matchbok3··on The Contract on America
The typical American views a businessman who built (and lied and stole) a company as more experienced than senator who signs mostly bills that rename post offices.

The Democrats continue to insist that this isn't the case. And keep losing.

matchbok3··on The Contract on America
She was perceived by middle America as a left-wing candidate coming from a left-wing state.

Not really sure what you are arguing. The polls all showed this.

matchbok3··on The Contract on America
Nope. Just people who want candidates who can beat terrible people like Trump. It really isn't that hard. Biden did it.

We live in a two party system. Winning elections is important. Fielding left-wing candidates with no accomplishments makes Trump happen. It's not that complicated.

matchbok3··on The Contract on America
Figuring out how we got here is how we figure out how to get out of here.
matchbok3··on The Contract on America
Do you blame Trump or the democrats who force candidates like Harris or Clinton as choices? The blame lies just as much with those who have an entirely unpopular view of how the country should function, forcing those in the middle to Trump/etc.

Of course, much of this is due to continued polarization, notably in cities where socialism has grown popular and in the rural areas, where MAGA is rampant.

matchbok3··on Robotaxi Might Be a Narc
Nothing demonstrates more how the Verge has veered into la-la land leftism than this article. This new advanced technology stopped some criminals from carrying a gun and probably killing someone and this article basically anti-waymo claptrap.
matchbok3··on New York thoracic surgeon: "For many patients 9/11 is not over"
The sanctimonious arrogance from the left is a thrill to read about.

From a simple thing, the downside of covid lockdowns are not about missing your favorite restaurants or a "haircut" or some other casual hobby. It was the difference between working and getting money to feed your kids and not doing that. Because believe it or not, some people have to go do real work everyday.

You, as a member of the laptop class, simply have no idea what that is about. Saying people should be locked down, even when we have vaccines/treatments for something comparable to the flu is embarrassing.

matchbok3··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
There are many, many examples of left-wing ideology causing harm to researchers, professors, and the like. If you are in academia, you must submit to the left-wing group think or you will be cast away. Literally takes 10 seconds to research.

matchbok3··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
Overcomplicating things and referencing vague connections does not make an argument inherently better. Just longer.

No, it's not racist, no matter how much you try to make it so. It's exhausting and tired and makes people like Trump win. Racism is bad, good looking buildings are ... good.

Absolutely ridiculous, please listen to yourselves and please, please, think long and hard about how median American's would respond to this nonsense. (If you know any)

matchbok3··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
You seem to be making up arguments against some caricature that you have built in your mind in order to satisfy some form of virtue signaling or sanctimonious belief. Whatever it is, it makes no sense and I feel dumber for having read it.

Go touch grass, it's healthy. (And get off bluesky)

matchbok3··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
Bostock affirmed core civil rights to transgender people in housing, employment, etc. The fights now are about other things (not "rights") and as such, are much more unpopular. In fact, a majority of people, even on the right, support the core rights affirmed by Bostock.
matchbok3··on Let's make quality the norm again
Where do you live? Somewhere with "taste", I imagine? Please tell us.
matchbok3··on New York thoracic surgeon: "For many patients 9/11 is not over"
Sorry, nobody serious actually thinks the lockdowns were too short. Only the laptop class who were insulated from the economic effects. Once the vaccines were available there was no rational purpose for any lockdown. Even authoritarian China had to relent once it was proven they simply don't work.

People who post lot on hacker news during the work day aren't "working class", nor do their politics align with a low/middle income worker, at all. This is like the DSA claiming they are fighting for the "working class". It's laughable.

What fantasy world is this in which a government is able to keep every human locked in their house for 5 years? What are you smoking lol.

matchbok3··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
They do it because it wins them elections. It's a 90/10 issue and national democrats are on the losing side.
matchbok3··on Europe must build own AI, says ECB's Lagarde
Of course free stuff is popular. Nobody argues that it isn't. That's not the point. The point is it hurts innovation.

I would hate to live in a country that is entirely dependent on USA or China AI.

matchbok3··on Europe must build own AI, says ECB's Lagarde
Years and years of dependence on the US for financial, technology, and military advancement + protection has come to this. Happy to see they are waking up, but is it too late? Will their nonsense labor laws curtail such developments? Only time will tell.
matchbok3··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Well, Flock is great and has caught many murderers. What's your point?
matchbok3··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Sorry, "tech" is not some catch-all for all the new things. "Tech" has given us wonderful new medicine and safer cars and faster internet.

Subscription fees? So "tech" should make producing a film ... free now? What exactly is your point?

Who exactly promised all these so-called benefits you keep saying you were lied about? The companies make products and services. Many, many people buy those things. Both sides are happy, transaction over. What "greater good" are you complaining about, exactly and who promised it to whom?

matchbok3··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Not the same at all.
matchbok3··on Apple Watch Ultra 4
There's also a bubble of wealthy people who spend their time commenting on HN articles, complaining about .... other wealthy people.

For what purpose? Virtue signaling?

matchbok3··on AirPods 5
What % of people replace a battery over the lifespan of an item? Does the increased complexity and size of the unit make up for the slightly longer lifespan? What makes it "better" for the environment, exactly when it all ends up in a landfill after 5 years anyway?
matchbok3··on AirPods 5
There is no proof that user-replaceable batteries meaningfully reduces e-waste. A lot of tech is upgraded due to obsolete CPUs, etc, not batteries. Plus, batteries last a long time now.

Also, landfills work really well. Most recycling doesn't work and pollutes more.

matchbok3··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
How selfish. Why should I, someone who wants a safer AV, subsidize those who are riskier drivers?

Extremely selfish.

matchbok3··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
The knee-jerk conspiratorial reactions to new technology is depressing to see on HN. Do better.
matchbok3··on Seattle public schools shuts down gifted and talented program
Looks like they did reverse course a bit, aka a "delay". My comment is still valid. Progressives around the country view these programs as bad.

Please avoid personal attacks, do better.
