mastersummoner··on FDA approves first nonprescription daily oral contraceptive
Modafinil is one.
mastersummoner··on New York City will charge drivers going downtown
For the record, there are lots of people who love living in extremely dense urban situations. There are benefits to being exposed to so many different people living different lives, it's one of the things that cuts down on the bias of icky being exposed to an extremely homogenous group with homogenous opinions.

Obviously urban centers can be improved on, and many people living in them wish they had more personal space. But there are advantages too.

mastersummoner··on New York City will charge drivers going downtown
Why not plan ~ten years ahead and expect these buses to be self driving then?
mastersummoner··on Ask HN: Who got hired from HN?
Honestly, at this point it's only quasi-political. It was a joke, and a pretty funny one.
mastersummoner··on Online daters are less open-minded than their filters suggest
I can't believe how well you were set up for this one, haha.
mastersummoner··on Things I Learned from My 2 Year Old Baby Girl
If people find it interesting, then the answer is yes.
mastersummoner··on Zelda: Link's Awakening game engine documentation (2021)
Just chiming in - my absolute favorite GB game growing up. Fantastic storyline, amazing music, fun secrets. One of the best ever made for the system without a doubt.
mastersummoner··on Safari's date-picker is the cause of 1/3 of our customer support issues
Chronic is an awesome date library, agreed.
mastersummoner··on I still use Flash
It was long because there were a lot of steps to describe. But for each, the writing was concise, interesting and entertaining.
mastersummoner··on Elon Musk to quit as Twitter CEO when replacement found
Question is, how much influence will be retain? Assuming this ever happens.
mastersummoner··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
Fair point! I'd say what I'm most aware of having saved me the most time is knowledge of the shortcuts and features available _in_ SublimeText though.
mastersummoner··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
Not a program, but being very familiar with the keyboard shortcuts in SublimeText has saved me countless hours of dev time.

Things like Ctrl-D to highlight multiple instances of a word, plus the ability to put on Caps checking in the search bar first so you're only highlighting correctly capitalized versions. Make the same change in multiple locations. Saves so much time.

Knowing how to highlight a letter, a word, a line at a time.

Ctrl-shift-down to make your cursor span multiple lines at the same point, and have copy/paste respect the copied text from the respective lines.

So many things add up to hours upon hours of time saved, and frustration avoided.

mastersummoner··on Wild mammals are making a comeback in Europe
This is mentioned in other responses, but keep in mind that frequently, it's urban sprawl which endangered these animals in the first place.

We're not going to start closing up our cities to let animals come back. But we can take steps to make the environments around them more hospitable: bridges under highways, reserved areas for wildlife. Once these are in place, some reintroductions to kick-start the process makes more sense.

A lot of the animals being reintroduced were key parts of the ecosystem before they were eliminated in areas, and their absence can lead to unexpected imbalances. Reintroductions makes sense in this context. Or at least, introducing another animal which fills a similar niche.

mastersummoner··on Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?
I managed to get into professional software development in my early thirties. My college track was for that, but took a severe detour after graduation. For me, a programming bootcamp helped me turn things around and get me my first job as a professional developer, though the ecosystem is a lot different now and I'm not sure how good even the best is. Highly recommend doing a lot of research before plonking down a chunk of change.

I also had my first kid at 39. It's hard, but management. A kid in your forties isn't unheard of at all, and you can absolutely meet a wonderful woman at any point in your life.

Strong agree on seeking therapy. You have a lot of options, but getting your head and heart in a good place will make the path a whole lot more evident and smooth.

mastersummoner··on ChatGPT, Rot13, and Daniel Kahneman
I suspect it's "not very complicated" for anybody with a decent grounding in the tech. Which is very much not me!
mastersummoner··on ChatGPT, Rot13, and Daniel Kahneman
God love you, your idea of "not very complicated" is absolutely fascinating.
mastersummoner··on A museum dedicated to mistranslated Japanese phrases
I live in a predominantly Chinese area of a major US city, with many people who speak virtually no English and many stores dedicated to catering to them. Including clothing stores.

The amount of engrish I see on the shirts and jackets of people walking around is a wonder to behold.

mastersummoner··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
I've been really lucky with my startup experience so far. The two I've worked for have both had really great, though different, environments. My most recent startup was 4 to 5 people and it was absolutely fantastic.
mastersummoner··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
To me, break implies it was chosen for personal reasons. But I'll let GP answer for sure.
mastersummoner··on A Cypherpunk’s Manifesto (1993)
I loved soulseek. Finding someone with interesting tastes and browsing their collection was great - found some artists I still love to this day that way, like Bogdan Racyinski (you don't turn down an album called Samurai Math Beats) and the Dresden Dolls.
mastersummoner··on Focus is saying no to good ideas

mastersummoner··on Simulating protected mode in the Z80 [video]
Alternately, you could make enough money that you are able to bequeath upon your ilk sufficient money to not need to worry about it too much.

Though if you're doing this, highly recommend not letting them realize you're fairly well-off until they're old enough to know the value of a buck/peso/ruble/euro.

When I was first learning to code, I once told someone that working with SQL felt like trying to wrestle with a mainframe, and I stand by that assertion.
mastersummoner··on The reality of celebratory gunfire
Science.
mastersummoner··on The reality of celebratory gunfire
American here from a very large city. Mine did not, and even if it did I can almost guarantee you I'd never have stepped foot on it regardless.
mastersummoner··on The reality of celebratory gunfire
American here, and I have effectively zero instinctive idea of how large a football field is.
mastersummoner··on Aging programmer
Was made a team lead recent and it's... interesting.

I always saw myself as an individual contributor, and rebel against the path that leads to what's effectively project management with zero daily coding. But being the lead of a smallish team, making sure everyone's working towards goals and helping more junior devs when they get stuck, is a surprisingly interesting challenge.

mastersummoner··on Factorio is coming to Nintendo Switch
Actually, that... would explain a surprising amount about government dysfunction.
mastersummoner··on American chestnut tree in Centreville is the 'holy grail' for conservationists
Yup, same recommendation. That was my first time even hearing about this massive, landscape shifting chestnut blight; I have no idea how it isn't now commonly known.

And it was just a really great story in general. Definitely recommend.

mastersummoner··on Ask HN: What is something you built but never marketed?
I wrote an Android app that splits checks. You pre-create groups of people (Adam and Jane are a couple, John is solo, etc), then for each line item on the bill you decide which groups should be charged for it. You can split tax and tip proportionally or just evenly along people/groups.

And it uses OCR to scan the receipt and read the items, amounts and tax. I was amazed how well open source Tesseract worked for this out of the box.

Finished it but never marketed it, too much of a perfectionist. Worked really quite well though.

This was maybe 6-7 years ago, and I've since seem other apps doing basically the same thing.
