masterof0··on Master’s Degree in Computer Science
> The value of a MSCS for me is that I think it would help get me technical leadership jobs at big companies

At least in the US this is not true. Many people on the leadership at Amazon and Google (at least in my tenure there) didn't have masters or PhDs, what matters most are your professional achievements, actually smaller/medium corporations are the ones that will be impressed with your cert/degree. I have seen managers with no degrees( that started as a self-taught developers and later became managers) managing engineers graduated from MIT/Hardvard/etc. Maybe in Canada things are a bit different in that regard. Not discouraging OP or anything , everyone can spend their money however they see fit. Just pointing out of the myths I see often in legacy media.

masterof0··on Rejecting candidates unwilling to acknowledge female interviewers
`DoneWithAllThat ` said it all. I'm not dismissing anyone's experience, I'm just making an assessment taking into consideration OP and the type of content he publishes, I'm sure there is women that have had that experience, the same way people of color and other minorities have, maybe even white males when the interviewers are all from a certain group. That type of tweet was crafted for attention and virtue signaling as he himself is not a woman(judging by his profile, if he(she) is , my bad), he didn't show an specific case of that happening or denounce it, so is not really anything besides a story(that could be truth or not) where he(and his team) were the good guys.
masterof0··on Rejecting candidates unwilling to acknowledge female interviewers
I felt the same way, what a weird thing to tweet about. In all my years interviewing I have never seen anyone that wouldn't talk (or look at the eyes) of my female coworker when interviewing or elsewhere. I had female managers, directors and CTOs, and I don't recall an instance where the gender of the person were a problem. Looking at the person's twitter profile, he matches the type of those who think that having worked at FAANG or FAANG-like companies gives them some sort of extra credibility or something. I work and have worked at FAANGs and feel like if I have to write a short Bio for myself, the company I work for wouldn't make it there.
masterof0··on Ask HN: How do you find credible information online?
The thing is, smart people can be wrong ( or being bought ) as well, and if OP is looking for facts (things that actually happened) "smart people" could easily present a different version with hidden biases of what happened. I hope by smart you didn't meant "people I agree with". I would try to find news sites without opinions, or social media posts from people that live in the place where the event happened and/or opposite takes showing different evidence, most of the time the "truth" lies in between.
masterof0··on Twitter board adopts poison pill after Musk’s $43B bid to buy company
Sell all of his stock, and call out the execs publicly.
masterof0··on Natural Wine, Inherited Money, and the Delusions of the “Future-Rich Millennial”
Are you guys getting downpayment contributions? I had to buy my house on my own, my parents make way less than me, it will actually break my heart to take money from my parents.
masterof0··on Farewell, Elementary
They would be a great competitor for Zorin. Is ok to have competition.
masterof0··on Netflix Should Sell Ads
Because asking a company to put ads on a product their already charge for, is such a sophisticated and unique take, dunno how this guy doesn't have a Pulitzer already. I don't think 3 dollars less of a monthly subscription justifies a truckload of shitty ads. Disgraceful.
masterof0··on Farewell, Elementary
I wonder if the folks at Elementary targeted businesses with a "Elementary OS Professional" version. Is pretty hard to get regular people to pay for an operating system when they don't need to, either because the competition is fierce (Zorin, Ubuntu, Mint, Deepin, ...), or because they can choose to donate 0 dollars. I have never seen an app in their custom App Store that will attract me enough to pay for it. The OS itself is pretty neat. I think they should have tried to get government entities, schools, or hospitals to use their OS, so they can have a decent income stream.
masterof0··on Show HN: Coding interviews stress me out, so I built a takehome test tool
Oh I see, so the take-home project would be the just the first step, not the only? That makes sense. Congrats on the launch, and wish you the best.
masterof0··on Show HN: Coding interviews stress me out, so I built a takehome test tool
Take-home projects are flawed as well.

- The candidates could pay/ask someone else to do the assessment for them/* and prepare a presentation.

- You are assuming candidates are willing to dedicate time to complete your take-home project. If your company is an unknown/smaller/boring company, good candidates won't bother to go through the process.

- Phone screens and or system design white-boarding, etc... only require 45mins - 1 hour from the interviewer to assess a candidate.

All interview techniques are flawed and there is no clear winner. FAANGs, for example, prefer the algo/design interviews and they do have hard data to work with, and clearly that have worked for them.

That said, I think you will succeed. Very simple, straightforward site. Seemingly neat integration with Greenhouse. And clear pricing structure.

masterof0··on How to get the most out of your 1:1s
I agree, I find those "strategies" on how to talk to your manager , incredibly cringe. What I have worked out for me in 2 FAANGs and 2 regular unknown companies, is working hard, getting things done, when I achieve something that can be shown to other people, I do show it and talk to my manager about compensation, and if I want to move up, I let him know that, I tell him what I think is my timeline for that; if he disagrees, his problem , I find a better place to work, the market for engineers is very competitive. I don't need to be simp-ing to my manager. I think if you keep your relationship with your manager honest and always use a clear, bs free, communication channel with him, you will achieve great things. Managers are just people like you, don't be afraid to leave a bad manager.

Do you have in your road map, to add Trump's voice?, I will use your app everyday, lol
masterof0··on Vanced: YouTube adblocker for Android
Because if someone gives a free magazine, I don't have to stare at the ads either. If they (Youtube) don't want people to block ads, they can stop serving ads and charge for the service. People will move to another free services and continue blocking ads. No company have the right to serve me content I don't want to consume. If not my responsibility as a consumer to justify/support a company's business model
masterof0··on How do you guys come up with such an algorithm
Came here to say this, as far as LC questions go, this one is pretty straight forward. OP, the way you come up with a solution like this is practice and more practice, the same way you can solve an equation you never seen before, because you have a set of tools (patterns, "tricks", knowledge, ...) that allows you to come up with a solution. Keep practicing and you will see the progress.

Yeah, OP seems to not understand why San Fransisco(and tech hubs in general) real state is hot. I'm line with you, this is just a marketing piece, with low effort, made up excuses for why not paying people in 3rd world countries fairly.
masterof0··on 20 Years of .NET
Compared with FAANGs and unicorns , not really, but if you believe their stock will explore in the future, is worth a try, I guess?
masterof0··on Show HN: Our fair salary calculator for remote teams (+ template)
Yeah, OP is not paying Argentineans 200k tho, you don't want their 5 engineers over there making Buenos Aires the next San Fran. lol
masterof0··on Show HN: Our fair salary calculator for remote teams (+ template)
I read the article your justification to pay people leaving in poorer countries less if because it raises costs?

> I'm personally afraid we're going to replicate the San Francisco phenomenon over and over, to cities elsewhere in the world.

What do you mean by this? Your company paying 10 guys US market rates won't raise any city's rent prices. Rent prices are impacted by supply and demand. So you are afraid if you pay your employees San Francisco rates, their city will become San Fransisco? I don't understand the fear of some engineer in Argentina making 200k USD, wouldn't that make your company very desirable to work for over there?

All the reasons you give in the article seems like excuses to no pay people certain rate. And about paying everyone SF rates, it does raises costs, duh, but it also raises the amount and quality of talent you can reach internationally. It feels you are seeking validation on a compensation scheme that's at least equal that most corporations and bring nothing new to plate, nor is any more fair than what everyone else is doing. That's why anyone can see why Basecamp holds the moral high ground on this topic.

masterof0··on Show HN: Our fair salary calculator for remote teams (+ template)
I agree, I feel is unfair to pay me (hypothetically) less just because I live in a poorer country. I think the Basecamp way[1] is a better approach.

Checkout Laracasts, Jeffrey Way is pretty good explaining things. I don't use Laravel (or PHP at all),but I do like his video tutorials a lot. I say this, because maybe is you the docs, or you cant find a way of doing something, etc...

masterof0··on Amazon Pip Horror Story
I also worked at Amazon, my team was great, and I had a great time. But, I also acknowledge the immense amount of toxicity that comes with "getting promoted" at Amazon. Many manager are on a visa, and get pressured to "deliver results" or they lose their visa. So these managers push insane deadlines, people burn out, the ones not in a visa leave, the others need to deal with the huge ops load, the frequent on-call rotation, and with an angry manager.
masterof0··on Amazon Pip Horror Story
So you need to be an experienced dev to speak up against a toxic work environment? I do also cringe when I see comments like yours attacking the guy for doing something you wouldn't do. He probably mentioned the amount of lines of codes as a way of saying he did put a lot of effort(is common knowledge that on itself is a shitty metric). Maybe he, also wouldn't want to be hired by someone like you either, not would I.

Yeah, I worked with ex-IBM and ex-DELL people over there. Boca is one of the best places to live in SoFlo, in my opinion.
masterof0··on Intel's $20B Ohio factory could become world's largest chip plant
"Used to be"? I lived in South Florida for a long time.

- 0 tech scene, besides a couple of wannabe startups , ans a few outliers.

- Compensation is bad, taking into account the raising real state prices.

- Most companies are on the services, tourism, insurance, medicine sector.

- Racism is rampant, very ironix as SoFlo workforce is mostly south american immigrants.

- High level of organized crime, shitty schools for kids (including mass shootings), very few things to do(besides the beach), and so on...

Btw this is arguably the best part of Florida, don't even mention central/north Florida. People moving there are chasing tax breaks( I will still take Texas any day). SoFlo is great to party, and that type of things, but as long term move, for a techie , is going to be rough. But to each their own, I met people there that really love it.

masterof0··on How we bootstrapped our SaaS to $1M ARR
> HNer here, I was waiting for this comment to be honest. So in essence, if you consider that being a billionaire is having a billion dollars, you're correct.

But to me, being a billionaire VS "a regular dude" is much more nuanced than this.

Being a billionaire is a state of mind.....yadda yadda
