maslam··on Launch HN: Akiflow (YC S20) – Bring your tasks and calendars together
No connection to the Akiflow team. I found the tool on my own and really like it. It’s snappy and does what it claims to do. I don’t really need their Calendly-lite implementation but everything else is very well put together.
maslam··on American society is so focused on race that it is blind to class
Well written and kind response. Thank you for doing this. We could use a bit more of this on HN.
maslam··on Lessons learned from running Apache Airflow at scale

maslam··on The Humble Brilliance of Italy's Moka Coffee Pot (2018)
Which one did you get?
maslam··on Databricks response to Snowflake's accusation of lacking integrity
Everyone win when data platforms submit audited benchmarks...
maslam··on Snowflake’s response to Databricks’ TPC-DS post
@AtlasLion you are right real world performance matters. We test extensively with actual workloads, and the speed up holds there too. For example: lots of real world BI queries are repeated over smallish data sets of 10 to 50 GB. We test that size factor and pattern all the time.
maslam··on Snowflake’s response to Databricks’ TPC-DS post
Hey jiggawatts - TPC is the official way to audit benchmarks in the database industry. They’ve been around for a bit, but let me know if you want more info, I’m happy to share more about them.
maslam··on Snowflake’s response to Databricks’ TPC-DS post
Databricks broke the record by 2x) and is 10x more cost effective, in an audited benchmark. Snowflake should participate in the official, audited benchmark. Customers win when businesses are open and transparent…
maslam··on Reflecting on Four Years at Databricks
Yeah he’s a special person. His book is a joy to read (and learn from!)
maslam··on Reflecting on Four Years at Databricks
I mean, not really? I’m just a product manager at Databricks who cares about our customers and candidates. Take that for what you will, I guess.
maslam··on Reflecting on Four Years at Databricks
Hey Will I’m sorry it didn’t work out. We’ve actually adjusted really well to COVID (in no small part thanks to our amazing employees).

We care a lot about our hiring experience. I’d be happy to chat about this over email. Feel free to drop me a message at Bilal dot Aslam at databricks dot com.

maslam··on Uber must employ its drivers, Dutch court rules
No. We respect our workers too much.
maslam··on Uber cuts 3000 more jobs, closes 45 offices
I'd love to talk to technical product managers. We're hiring at Databricks Amsterdam. Please contact me at bilal dot aslam at databricks dot com
maslam··on Microsoft Access: The Database Software That Won't Die
Here's a little known fact - the Jet storage engine behind Access is alive and well. It's used by Active Directory and many other products at Microsoft. At my previous company, we built a distributed key-value store on top of it (much like using sqlite in a distributed manner).
maslam··on Ventilen, a Danish organization to address loneliness in young people
Is this Amsterdam? Sounds like the perfect description!
maslam··on .NET 5
PluralSight has a .NET course that covers this. Sorry I don't have the link handy it's something about Mac and Linux dev on .NET
maslam··on AJIT, a ‘Made in India’ Microprocessor
Boooo. Your jokes are bad and you should feel bad! :-D
maslam··on Launch HN: Keeper Tax (YC W19) – Find tax writeoffs in bank statements
Wonderful service. I really like the idea. I think $10/month is way too low for the value you provide - think of the tax savings, and auditing capabilities you could provide. Good luck, I think you should charge more.
maslam··on HTML, CSS and our vanishing industry entry points
Hey there, I am a product manager at DocuSign. Sorry about your experience. I would love to dig into this - can you drop me a note at bilal dot aslam at docusign.com? Thank you!
maslam··on Show HN: GuiLite – Tiny UI framework, runs on MCU without OS
Please refrain from unconstructive comments! How would you make the design better?
maslam··on Mystery tracks being 'forced' on your Spotify
Perhaps disorienting is a better word. It's really strange to see someone else play music on your account.
maslam··on Mystery tracks being 'forced' on your Spotify
This literally happened to me. Unfortunately with both FB and Alexa. It's concerning to say the least
maslam··on I Can No Longer Recommend Google Fi
I've been a Fi customer for two years. Sometimes it 'just works' when you travel internationally, which is magical. Most times however it just ok. It was dismal in Pakistan last year. In Netherlands it's barely ok. I'm ditching it in a few days since the Dutch have better, cheaper carriers.
maslam··on Froid: Optimization of Imperative Programs in a Relational Database [pdf]
Karthik, I'm no Spark expert but almost all advice I read is to avoid UDFs if at all possible. Examples below:

maslam··on Froid: Optimization of Imperative Programs in a Relational Database [pdf]
Thank you for the paper - it is well-written and succinct. Karhik, do you think this approach can be applied to Apache Spark as well (given its well-known slowness with UDFs)?
maslam··on Krisp.ai – Mute background noise during your calls
Unconstructive comment. Please don't demean their hard work with sarcasm. Small companies are hard enough to build as is.
maslam··on IP Geolocation Through Reverse DNS

Where the code? :/

maslam··on An Update on the Security Issue
Yes exactly. A rational response to this is to delete your FB account.
