marysminefnuf··on Algebraic topology: knots links and braids
im kidding lol. its just a funny observation. its kinda like if you like it then its good to know the educational value of it for future reference. im always suspicious of high upvote to low comment ratios so i like it when users call it out.
marysminefnuf··on Study finds teens spend nearly a third of the school day on smartphones
im in elementary and its four hours of computers on average but we have two-three recesses now. my class is a lot different because i try my best to stay away from the tech. in middle school and high school its usually in class all on computers and when they are away from them its all on phones. they are usually 8 hours a day on a device after elementary school. if education is going to improve the tech has to stay outside of schools.

marysminefnuf··on Ensuring AI use in education leads to opportunity
complete bullshit. literally every mainstream study on tech and ai in education have shown more screens decrease successful learning outcomes. ai will never find a home in my classroom lol. if other teachers and parents want it, it can live in their classes and homes. I feel powerful in this time of uncertainty over ai because I can choose to make these tech companies homeless.

Israel knew what they were doing. They bombed a school and kids got killed. It doesnt really matter where combatants are at its a school. I think its important to make that distinction between israel and its government however. Jews dont want anything to do with the government of israel. A small vocal minority that are not much observant keeps putting them in power. There have been 1000000 of thousands in the streets for years and years protesting against the government. And If we make that same distinction here in america between love of our country and hate for our awful government we gotta do the same for all these other countries too.

marysminefnuf··on Solution to HN getting overwhelmed problem
I think we should just be able to filter out what we want to ignore. So we just have tags on all types of posts we can use when we submit and when we sort by new we can filter out topics or search by topic. So if i dont want to see ai links anything people tag as ai wont pop up.
marysminefnuf··on Ask HN: How did you figure out what research field you were passionate about?
Asked god for a sign and found out about braiding in math
marysminefnuf··on Saturday Night Live criticised for 'hurtful' Tourette's sketch
it was a disgusting sketch. I grew up with Tourettes and its harmful to tell people that tics can be controlled and are not involuntary. snl makes jokes about things that are not inherently funny like race and gender or disabilities all the time that's why people feel like it used to be better imo. jokes aren't funny when its at a groups or someones expense.
marysminefnuf··on Why does the Hacker News UI never get updated?
because its perfect. although my one thing would be adding the ability to tag posts so we can filter by those topics.
marysminefnuf··on What Is Limerence?

way too exhausted lol. by the time I digest it all today its already tomorrow.
marysminefnuf··on Alabama offers three tricks to fix poor urban schools
teacher here. there is a huge reason why we dont use reading levels to promote in michigan. its unfair to hold a third of the kids back because of biology. the kids develop early on in elementary school rapidly and kids born at the end of the year from september to december will always be a few months behind in development. unsurprisingly, the current statistic we have is that 1/3 of our 3rd graders are illiterate according to our state. not just having trouble reading, but cannot read at all. that tracks in my classroom, but we're getting better about it as the year progresses. Ive found that reduced screen time is the best way to get kids literate again in my homeroom.

marysminefnuf··on Ask HN: Why is YouTube's recommendation system so bad?
it used to be a ton better but its just optimized now so we are more likely to click on things we see rather than things that are interesting or relevant. they want us to click so we see the ads lol.
