maryrosecook··on Move to NYC. Hack on cool stuff. Enjoy startup life
"'Chicks'? You're such a man."
maryrosecook··on Enough women in Coders at Work?
How about if they just emulate the female role models in their life?
maryrosecook··on Persuade xor Discover
"This is just a rumour" is not boilerplate if it's the only reference to the source of the information. Also, "sources" is highly ambiguous: who do you mean? the guys at the bus stop or the company board members?
maryrosecook··on Ask HN: Do you create music? Let's hear it!
I make music in Ableton Live. I sing, play an electric guitar, a microKORG, a child's glockenspiel and assorted things (plastic bottles, lamps, doors, cassette tapes etc.)

maryrosecook··on Ask HN: review my tiny app - code to html converter
I use gist.github.com for this. Advantages:

* Always editable in a clean text-area. * Version controlled. * Language detection and syntax highlighting.

maryrosecook··on Ask HN: Do you actively contribute to open source projects?
Um, I open source my own projects at github.com/maryrosecook Does that count?
maryrosecook··on Our product is self-funded -- should we apply to Winter YC?
On a side note, BitsyBox is a great idea: content management without the content management system, or, a feather rather than a sledgehammer.
maryrosecook··on Bobby McFerrin Demonstrates the Power of the Pentatonic Scale
Gosh, I'm sorry to post a contentless comment, but watching this just made me so happy.
maryrosecook··on I Quit The iPhone
Apple and Google working on a deal doesn't fit. If that were the case, why would Apple spit in Google's eye by rejecting their app? If that were the case, why would Google develop and submit their app in the first place?
maryrosecook··on When I died
Yes, I certainly know how lucky I am to live in a country with a nationalised health service. And I am eternally grateful to the rest of the population who have contributed to my healthcare via their taxes. I know that if I live to be a hundred, the taxes I pay won't get close to covering the cost.
maryrosecook··on When I died
I also find it comforting to discover other young people who have weird hearts. Even cardiac doctors and nurses remark on my age.

Further, there is a medical unit in London called GUCH (Grown-Up Congenital Heart) that was created specifically for people like us who had heart problems early on in life. The need wasn't there before because, in the past, we'd all be dead by adulthood.

maryrosecook··on When I died
Aww, thanks very much. I have a few heart defects, but things had been quiet for about five years until I had the cardiac arrest.
maryrosecook··on When I died
Thank you very much for all the well wishes.
maryrosecook··on When I died
blush Awww, thanks, Kem.
maryrosecook··on When I died
I'm terribly sorry to hear about your friend.

I have had cardiac check-ups at least once a year for my whole life. In several instances, new problems were found at one of the check-ups and the wheels were set in motion to mend things. Further, when I was in hospital for the cardiac arrest, the bulge in my aorta was discovered by accident.

I live in the UK. Perhaps the NHS are more will to keep tabs on people than private health services in other countries.

maryrosecook··on When I died
I posted this because I thought the HN community might find the doctors' problem solving approach interesting.
maryrosecook··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Wow, that sounds amazing. Don't forget to emphasise the benefit to the patient, as well. Spending two hours in a small, hot tube when you've just had heart surgery is not fun.
maryrosecook··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
How are you trying to make it suck less? (I'm just curious: recently, I had three MRI scans while I was in hospital).
maryrosecook··on Infidelity and Startups
Is trustworthyness strongly related to success in business? It seems that, more often, successful people are characterised by their ruthlessness. Further, capitalism thrives on the selfishness of the invidual.

Ruthlessness and selfishness are two character traits that are found in people who are unfaithful.

maryrosecook··on Dev stays without pay to finish Mac Graphing Calculator as skunkworks project
Sorry. I didn't realise it had been posted before.

Steven Levy's book about the creation of the original Macintosh is also wonderful.

maryrosecook··on The Killer Twitter App Hasn’t Been Built Yet
This is an amalgamation of lots of different Twitter apps. More importantly, it's an amalgamation of this guy's favourite Twitter apps. It's his killer app. However, many other people will want a different set of apps in their killer app.

What this guy is really saying is, "Build me a custom version of this thing." Sounds like enterprise software.

Some progress may me made by rolling up some of the popular/complementary apps and, thus, satisfy a large enough group of users.

maryrosecook··on No Hire
Some organisations make you take a drug test and a medical exam. I think this is scandalous, but looking at someone's Facebook is unobstusive in comparison.
maryrosecook··on Taking a stand: Facebook, TechCrunch, and Free Speech
"hate speech directly attacks free speech"

No, it doesn't, but it might attack the aims of granting free speech. It may make people feel less free, or less safe, but it doesn't take away their ability to have their own say.

I think anybody should be allowed to say anything, and then people can resolve problems on their own. Rational people limit what they say based upon the environment. If someone asked me about my sexual identity in Alabama, I'd be unlikely come right out and say I am queer.

A much more convicing argument for Tenner's point of view is:

Hate speech should be illegal because it impairs others' freedom. If a group of workers in a male-dominated environment put up porn on the walls of the changing rooms, it may make the few women feel uncomfortable.

In the case of the living room with the person spouting racist remarks, there is a distinction between public and private places. In public: anything goes. (There, it might be useful to incorporate sgrove's idea of ideas vs just words.) In private, people have a right to control their own environment.

maryrosecook··on Inkling launches anti-bloat collaboration tool. "Email's just fine" - tgethr.com
Twitter is a bad example: in that case it's the community that makes it valuable, which is much harder to "clone".
maryrosecook··on Why "next-gen games" went gray, brown, and grey.
Interesting that the palette of the original Quake game was browns and reds, also for technical reasons, but different ones.
maryrosecook··on Poll: App rejected. Is this offensive? Seriously Apple?
Two anecdotes.

Perfect Dark, the N64 game released around the year 2000, got given an 18 certificate in the UK because of the fact that blood can splatter from shot enemies onto walls.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark, the film released in 1981, nearly got refused a PG [edit: thanks, bena] certificate because it showed exploding heads.

The picture you linked depicts both of these acts of violence, whereas Wolfenstein 3D does not. Maybe Apple have similarly esoteric criteria for unacceptable acts of violence as the film and video game rating boards.

maryrosecook··on Ask HN: How many of you play music?
Have a solo band: http://werenotthecoolkids.com

Kind of pop/noise/experimental; to put it another way: a noise band playing pretty melodies.

maryrosecook··on Ask HN: please review my webapp: metracks.com
I have a pretty niche taste in music, so it might be worth my while uploading all my music so I can access it from anywhere. However, if I had a normal taste in music, why would I not just use Spotify?
maryrosecook··on Ask HN: Please review my startup crowdmind.com
As I'm sure you're aware, http://ask.metafilter.com does the same thing. I use it because of the MetaFilter community: I have a general understanding of the demographic, morals, values and politics of the people I'm asking questions of. I also know that people's answers must be posted with an account they probably value because they have paid $5 to create it.

Do you plan to foster a community with certain features? Or are you looking for a broader range of people?
