marwis··on Ente: Open-Source, E2E Encrypted, Google Photos Alternative
Yes, it is. Although seems only limited to Camera Roll folder. Perhaps this is why Samsung Camera built-in OneDrive integration uses different folder.

Their mobile app is now stripping GPS on upload while files uploaded from desktop are unaffected.

However the files I already had uploaded going back to 2017 were stripped. No idea if this was done server side or by the mobile client but the end effect is the same.

Unlike Google, Microsoft doesn't bother documenting this policy.

Takeout fails if you have too many files. I had to takeout few albums at a time which is a PITA.

OneDrive ceased to be a good backup alternative when they stripped GPS from all my photos 1-2 years ago. Unlike Google, there's no way to recover original files. They simply destroyed them.

marwis··on WebKit switching to Skia for 2d graphics rendering
Mozilla's WebRender. It's actually a better option by their own criteria because it's developed as a standalone reusable library.
marwis··on WASM Instructions
Strange choice to use MathJax when much better alternatives exist like KaTeX
marwis··on Basic proxy implementation using io_uring
Doesn't work on Chrome too.

Needs .linenumbers { line-height: 12pt } but I think vertical line spacing within text node cannot be precisely controlled and is browser dependent.

marwis··on Guix on the Framework 13 AMD
I don't see how any toolkit design could be incompatible with this and not sure how color spaces play into that?

Every X11 app is already composited and scaled by compositor and has top-level X window where it could set any property it wishes.

marwis··on Guix on the Framework 13 AMD
> 1. XWayland apps (...) The Wayland compositor has no way of detecting whether it actually scales

Can't X apps just set a window property (XChangeProperty) with their scale factor and have compositor read that?

marwis··on Guix on the Framework 13 AMD
It's definitely better than bilinear and bicubic. Looks like Lanczos but with some optimization for ClearType.
marwis··on Uv: Python packaging in Rust
LLVM was at least written in the same language it is compiling.

In this case they are replacing Python code with Rust which might exclude large part of Python community from being able to contribute.

MSIX + scheduled task is the way

Or just publish to MS Store and/or winget.

The manual GUI steps could be replaced with single command line on windows too.

marwis··on Sudo for Windows
It already does - SQL Server for Linux runs largely unmodified Windows userland on top of Linux kernel.

marwis··on Sudo for Windows
Seems like it could be done by adding new features/flags to runas?

And then maybe creating alias to sudo in PowerShell like it does for other things.

marwis··on Sudo for Windows
It has it's own config file and can be configured to do just about anything:

https://www.sudo.ws/docs/man/1.8.15/sudoers.man/

marwis··on Sudo for Windows
Maybe until UAC is improved you can ship with a launcher process that is signed by publisher "Unknown"?
marwis··on Billion file filesystem
But why can't journaled filesystem do the same? Didn't Log Structured Filesystem work like that? Or SQLite over Fuse.
marwis··on Meta cuts off third-party access to Facebook Groups
Before shutdown of Events API Facebook was a convenient hub for social events and parties. Shutting it down led to organizers no longer posting events to FB (I guess they were using some 3rd party platforms that cross-post to multiple sites) and just removed one of the few remaining reasons to use FB.

This I imagine will have similar effect with some groups moving elsewhere (Instagram, Twitter?), just further shrinking userbase.

marwis··on AvaloniaUI: Create Multi-Platform Apps with .NET
I don't think they've started such work but I don't really know.
marwis··on AvaloniaUI: Create Multi-Platform Apps with .NET
Not sure what you mean but WebRender powers Firefox which definitely works on the desktop.

You can use it to build desktop UI frameworks - see for example https://azul.rs/

marwis··on AvaloniaUI: Create Multi-Platform Apps with .NET
Perhaps Mozilla WebRender?
marwis··on AvaloniaUI: Create Multi-Platform Apps with .NET
Avalonia is not made by Microsoft.

On Windows it's actually just:

1. Press Win key 2. Type env 3. Choose system or account

marwis··on Oasis – a small, statically-linked Linux system
I'll give you a scenario where dynamic linkage is a clear win.

I have 16GB of RAM and usually when working all of it is in use. If everything was compiled statically I would get massive swapping.

marwis··on Oasis – a small, statically-linked Linux system
> A shared library would only be there across processes of different executable images if its users primarily, continuously execute the same paths in shared libs rather than anything unique in their own executable image

Yes, like libc/WinApi, Cairo/whatever graphics library of your OS, Gtk/Qt etc

All of the apps on my desktop (I don't use electron) share vast majority of their code (see above) and spend most of their time drawing UI through shared libs or doing their own business logic but that's part of their code and not subject to shared lib overhead.

marwis··on How I got an O-1 visa as a software engineer
But OP didn't apply for green card?

And now they can't anymore. Pretty strange move to go from L1 to O1 since L1 allows relatively straightforward upgrade to green card but O1 is a non-immigrant visa.

Correction: they can. Looks like "non-immigrant" can still have dual intent of immigrating.

marwis··on How I got an O-1 visa as a software engineer
And social media influencers too.

It's easier to meet extraordinary ability qualifications in non-technical professions that are more public facing.

marwis··on Oasis – a small, statically-linked Linux system
> The case for the shared library having better caching implies multiple processes that are distinct executables

But this is the most common case for desktops/multipurpose systems.

On my desktop there are tens or hundreds distinct processes sharing most of their code.

marwis··on Oasis – a small, statically-linked Linux system
Yes but most processes are unique. The only bash process I have running is my interactive shell.
marwis··on Oasis – a small, statically-linked Linux system
> Windows is basically all self-contained executables

With the caveat that the "standard library" they depend on is multiple GBs and provides more features than entire Gnome.

Also MS always worked in some tech to avoid library duplication such as WinSxS or now MSIX has autodedupe even at the time of download.
