marton_s··on Dropbox Paper mobile App Discontinuation
I’m a long time Dropbox user and had no idea what Paper is (it’s a collaborative document editing thing). I can’t recall ever seeing it as part of the Dropbox brand or anyone using it. I might have even been interested in using it… Is this just me or did they really fail to market this product big time?

marton_s··on Raivo OTP just deleted all tokens after update and is now asking for money
I am one of the victims. Only noticed something is wrong today, Raivo on my iPhone got renamed to Raivo Debug and repeatedly crashed on start.

I've updated the app - what could go wrong - and it seems like I am one of the unlucky ones that got their 2FA codes wiped forever.

There was no option shown for recovery that others mentioned here, and they did not ask for money either.

Now I am going through the pain of recovering each one of my dozens of accounts one-by one and moving 2FA codes to 1Password (and 1Passwords own 2FA to Google Authenticator on my iPhone). Quite ironically, I've switched to Raivo in an attempt to use fewer Google products.

I would like to report this to Apple (although they did review and approve all revisions - sounds like very little fu*ks they give), but not sure how. The report categories are "Request a refund, Report a quality issue, Report a scam or fraud, Report offensive abusive content, Report illegal content". I've tried "Report a quality issue" (closest to my situation) but then I get "Reporting not available".

marton_s··on HN website is/was down. I'm curious why?
> UX/UI is terrible and not user friendly

The Hacker News UX/UI is one of the best among the websites I regularly visit!

marton_s··on Show HN: Crunching 1,200 Authors' Favorite Reads of 2023
> Sadly books accessible in the US / English language is slowly becoming synonymous with general availability, through no fault of the US/UK or other English speaking countries. A huge amount of books are simply never translated to language with smaller markets.

Depends on the market I guess. I've checked the availability of the top 10 books of 2023 on Shepherd (https://shepherd.com/bboy/2023) in Hungary, which is a tiny market of ~10 million people. 50% of the books are available in in translated version, which I think is not terrible.

marton_s··on Berlin car sharing company Miles suspected of parking fee fraud (in German)
Only found news pieces in German about this, sorry.

tl;dr: Authorities investigate against Berlin based car sharing company Miles, suspecting a parking fee fraud of up to 30 million Euros against the state of Berlin, the practice may have been in place since 2019.

marton_s··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023)
Thanks for asking. The reasons for residency are: a) the team has zero resources or experience with the visa application and sponsoring process b) we want someone that can start within a few weeks.

Reason for EU/EFTA: easier sorting out taxation and labor law compliance.

We also assume we will enough candidates meeting this requirement in the first round. Should that be proven to be wrong, we might later loosen the criteria.

I hope this clarifies.

marton_s··on Foursqare/Unfolded Introduces Hex Tiles
I'd be curious to know what makes hexagonal tiles better than square shaped ones when it comes to working with geospatial data.
marton_s··on In defence of the boring web
Jekyll. That's the boring static site generator.
marton_s··on Encyclopedia of broken UserAgent string detections
A more accurate title would be “Four examples of broken UserAgent string detections”.
marton_s··on Teletext Archive – open repository for teletext recoverers
How does one "recover" teletext data, you may wonder.

Apparently, there is software for extracting teletext signal recorded on VHS tapes with the help of a video capture hardware: https://github.com/ali1234/vhs-teletext

What amazingly strange hobbies people have!

marton_s··on Learn accounting for free
I'm a software engineer who moved into freelance consulting a few years ago (I do back-ends and front-ends for mobile and web, nothing finance specific other than occasional credit card payment integrations). It's been a roller-coaster in many regards and one of the highlights is having learned a lot about bookkeeping, taxes, financial planning and everything that comes with running a small business in general. (Aspects which I initially despised but now I've accepted as necessary and doing them as routine.)

During these years I started playing with the idea of training myself in basic/intermediate accounting and/or finance. The motivation is twofold: run my own business better (and maybe stop paying an accountant to do my taxes) and maybe work on software projects in finance (where I suspect there is good money to be made).

I'd be interested hearing stories from fellow software engineers who did similar training!

marton_s··on Django 4.0 release candidate 1 released
Upgraded one of my non-trivial Django projects to 4.0rc1 and so far it seems like I had to change zero lines.

Pretty good for a new major version release, that's what I call mature software!

marton_s··on Some notes on using esbuild
Great read, kudos for using strace to understand what esbuild does! I should do that more often.

This is another reason to favor small and simple tools that do one thing: you can “take it apart” and understand it by using another simple tool. (Simple in a relative sense, e.g. compared to Webpack).

By the way for those who don’t know what strace is, it’s a command line utility that prints out system calls of another process, like opening files or network connections.

marton_s··on Facebook banned me for life because I help people use it less
I’ve unfollowed everyone on Facebook several years ago using a JavaScript for loop on the dev console and my usage dropped to a total of few hours yearly (excluding Messenger).

Sad that the extension was taken down but power users should still be able to do it eg. using snippets linked in this thread.

marton_s··on Tinder will introduce voluntary ID verification to reduce catfishing incidents
As the article does not explain it, I had to look up:

> Catfishing is a deceptive activity where a person creates a fictional persona or fake identity on a social networking service, usually targeting a specific victim.

marton_s··on America has a drinking problem
Thanks for sharing your perspective, I found this pretty insightful.
marton_s··on America has a drinking problem
True. As someone not familiar with contemporary societies where drinking is not allowed, I’m in fact curious about their drinking problems as well.
marton_s··on America has a drinking problem
I’m curious if there is a country which does not have a drinking problem (set aside those where alcohol is forbidden).
marton_s··on America has a drinking problem
I live in Germany where beer is abundant and so are the non-alcoholic variants. My favorite is non-alcoholic Hefeweizen - unfiltered wheat beer: no spoiled taste, the only thing absent is alcohol.
marton_s··on Show HN: Shepherd.com – Discover books in a new way, like wandering a bookstore
I am the engineer who built the software behind Shepherd.com and published my "backstage" perspective of the project here: https://salomvary.com/building-shepherd.html

Ask me anything!

tl;dr It's built using Django + PostgreSQL + Heroku + Cloudflare + Cloudinary + GitHub Actions.

marton_s··on Ask HN: What are some “10x” software product innovations you have experienced?
OS X / macOS. After about 5 years of Windows, 10 years of various Linux desktops, I got converted to Mac in 2012 and never looked back.
