martin_··on Ask HN: Is a computer science degree worth it or should I learn on my own?
I moved from the UK to the US when I was 20 with no degree, just self taught. Have been working in senior engineering roles for ~8 years. I do feel as though I’ve struggled more with the academic side of CS but the practical side is what you’re measured on post-inverview. You can’t go wrong by going to school, but it is becoming decreasingly necessary
martin_··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
I was a customer that was given the opportunity to work on improving the developer experience, and fixing the issues I was facing for a platform I was passionate about (Twilio)
martin_··on Linux touchpad like a Macbook: goal worth pursuing?
I've been using a 13" MBP for years, and am almost astounded by how much I take it, and its trackpad for granted from reading this thread. Also-- Would love it if you could share an example of the bash you execute to restore everything right up to the sessions (redacted where necessary)!
martin_··on Ask HN: Favorite note-taking software?
My biggest gripe with Apple Notes is if I throw some snippet of code in there it mutates the quotes to "smart quotes" and thus the code produces syntax errors if I try and use it again :(
martin_··on Ask HN: What interesting thought did you read on HN but couldn't find later?
This is less one that I read, but more one that I wrote. Sometime ~mid 2012 I wrote an Ask HN looking to meet people and find co-working space in the bay area, 6 years later I find myself living here (due to folks I met via that thread). Unfortunately, it was on a separate account and I've never been able to find it
martin_··on Dynimize: Speed Up MySQL with CPU Performance Virtualization
grogers explained my intent well, especially around the promotion of a replica to a primary work load (thank you). I think we're arguing semantics between optimizing machine code and rewriting mysqld. I want to emphasize that Dynamizer looks super awesome, and I do intend to try it, so no offense was intended. Well done!
martin_··on Dynimize: Speed Up MySQL with CPU Performance Virtualization
This looks like seriously impressive technology, and yields impressive results, but: I don't think I'd be comfortable with the idea of something rewriting my database in production. What I -would- probably be OK with is having dynamize analyze my workload in a staging/load test environment, and then producing a new binary for me which I could then run through its paces.

Beyond actual errors being produced, I'm wondering what'd happen in weird scenarios such as one where by primary gets heavily optimized for its write load and creeps up to, say, 80% CPU or so at peak.. What then happens then if my replica which has been heavily optimized for its read load gets promoted in a failure scenario and gets pegged at high CPU?

Final thought here is if this tech really is solid, when is AWS going to start shipping it with my VM?

martin_··on HomePod Teardown
It has 16GB of flash storage, who knows what it's for. I agree though, likely gets sent off to be recycled and the storage destroyed.
martin_··on HomePod Teardown
Though this thing does not seem remotely repair friendly, the guide looks wrong. There's no need to cut through the mesh and their video (in the same guide) even shows it: https://youtu.be/ArH41WyUt28?t=62

edit: the fact they have to use an ultrasonic cutter next in the video is insane and makes no sense. Is it possible that iFixit is simply missing the correct way to open this?

edit2: Summary of the video concludes that "Even though there looks to be an easy way inside, we failed to decode it. Without a repair manual, your odds of success are slim". Hence the 1/10, which makes sense.

martin_··on FCC plan would give Internet providers power to choose the sites customers see
You're absolutely not wrong. Resistbot has a team of volunteers who will write out, and deliver your letters. Of course, this is hard for us to scale to all of our almost 1.5 million users, but as we speak volunteers are targeting states and districts producing thousands of handwritten letters.

We're actively trying to drive for better engagement through targetted alerts regarding town halls in your area or helping you with voting ( https://resistbot.news/find-your-polling-place-620d1ea5faf7 ). Resistbot is more about helping get people engaged through low friction than be the alternative to showing up and having a face to face conversation with your officials.

martin_··on FCC plan would give Internet providers power to choose the sites customers see
Disclaimer: Resistbot engineer

For the past 7 months a group of volunteers has been building and scaling out Resistbot. Almost 5 million faxes and 1 million e-mails have been sent on behalf more than 1.4 million citizens. Super easy and low friction to have your voice heard - simply text RESIST to 50409, or Resistbot on Messenger, Viber, Telegram, we will find your officials, and help you craft your letter. It's important to note that the more personalized your letter the more effective it'll become, so avoid using templatized letters.

martin_··on Casper went to war with popular mattress review site, then financed its takeover
Curious: Did you consider the Purple? I tend to get pretty hot at night (no AC) and that one seems to boast the best marketing jargon with regards to cooling. Can you speak to the breathability of the others you've tried?
martin_··on Show HN: A hackable cryptocoin graph builder
Be cautious about exposing this on the public internet-- it's vulnerable to SQL Injection through misuse of prepared statements as noted in https://github.com/derogab/coingraph/issues/1
martin_··on AWS X-Ray – Distributed Tracing System
Looks awesome! When're you opening up the invites?
martin_··on Hyperloop One Raises $50M, Hires Former Uber CFO
Would building it underground largely solve these risks? We already build for natural disasters in mind- seems earthquakes would be the main issue in California, which structures claim to be "proofed" from.
martin_··on PHP 7 deployment at Dailymotion
Had a similar experience deploying HHVM at a previous company, I wrote up a blog post of the issues we ran into / how we worked around them[0]. One thing the dailymotion blog omits is hacklang which has additional features like lambdas, async support (though PHP 7 will soon?), strict typing, collections, generics and more. That said, if you're just trying to squeeze more out of an existing codebase, then PHP7 wins hands down.

martin_··on 150,000 IoT Devices Behind the 1Tbps DDoS Attack on OVH
Heh, it looks like ShodanHQ now has a section entirely dedicated to this... https://www.shodan.io/search?query=Server%3A+SQ-WEBCAM -- using their API, and a geoip database (eg: maxmind) you could build something similar in a couple of hours.
martin_··on 150,000 IoT Devices Behind the 1Tbps DDoS Attack on OVH
It's unfortunately way too easy to find such devices. A quick scan of the (less scary) end of the ipv4 address space and I was able to find ~15k cameras and I was only searching for a couple of models for fun... Here was the result: http://opencam.ma.rtin.so/ -- most of the pins probably wont work anymore, as it's a couple of years old.. Still crazy.
martin_··on House Passes Employee Stock Options Bill Aimed at Startups
So there's no way it could be retroactively applied, then. Bummer!
martin_··on House Passes Employee Stock Options Bill Aimed at Startups
This sounds great, though requiring "offering 80% of the workforce stock" and excluding highest paid executives seems vague - is this at time of hiring, when stock is issued, fully vested, when taxes are due, somewhere inbetween? I parted ways with a startup in the valley last year and exercised some shares on January 13th. If I had exercised just two weeks earlier, I'm told I would've been hit with north of 50k in AMT, I have until next year to figure it out now but I wonder if I'm eligible. Also curious how long it typically takes to get from house, through the senate and passed.

Looks like you figured it out, but for anyone else following along.. Click your username and you'll be taken to a page like https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=indirpir where you can place your token.
martin_··on Show HN: HN Chat – Minimal Hacker News Chat with User Verification
Unfortunately full of people attempting to XSS and spam unicode. I think I'll stick with IRC :)
martin_··on Ask HN: How do you handle DDoS attacks?
Worth noting that Incapsula had _multiple_, _world wide_ outages back in March. Akamai is a more expensive, but more reliable/proven alternative.

martin_··on YC Tech Stacks
I agree, that said, I think it's hard to say the 79% _don't_ A/B test. Could easily be homegrown, or round-robin based, or perhaps it was only included on a specific page.
martin_··on Ask HN: Anyone else having no email deliver with SendGrid?
I truly hope that an impact duration of more than a few days is not a requirement for updating your status page.
martin_··on Writing an editor in less than 1000 lines of code, just for fun
The GitHub page states: "The project is in alpha stage and was written in just a few hours taking code from my other two projects, load81 and linenoise."

martin_··on Tinnitus in relation to neck/head muscle tension
I'll jump on the +1 train here, but it actually did work, though just for a couple of minutes.
martin_··on How we found a bug in Amazon ELB
Genuine question: Why is it okay to reuse instances because it's controlled via an abstraction layer, as opposed to doing it yourself?
martin_··on Ocean Mobile Linux Server
Very sorry to hear that, I'm sure someone will be in touch shortly. Are any lights showing or is it completely dead?
martin_··on Ocean Mobile Linux Server
I was involved in the development of this with two stellar engineers (David/Kousha) at iCracked. Surprised to see this here at this point as all available units sold several months ago. Happy to answer questions!
