And here is the commit https://github.com/openbsd/src/commit/21b3e8786537fe05ba6f42...
martin_··on My co-founder was a worthless chump but I survived
The author states that he wrote the android app, the firmware, the web prototype and then the rewrite of the web service - what about that suggests he has no technical skill?
martin_··on Robinhood S-1 IPO
Looks like it:

"RHF, one of our broker-dealer subsidiaries, is a member of the selling group for this offering. We expect the underwriters to reserve approximately 20 to 35% of the shares of our Class A common stock offered by this prospectus for RHF, acting as a selling group member, to allocate for sale to Robinhood customers through our IPO Access feature on our platform. Any such sales will be made at the same initial public offering price, and at the same time, as any other purchases in this offering, including purchases by institutions and other large investors, and in accordance with customary broker-dealer practices and procedures."

martin_··on iOS 14.5 delivers Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch, new privacy controls, and more
Yes - I live in Austin on Verizon and it often shows 5G but is usually slower than my AT&T LTE was in San Francisco -- however -- occasionally I get 5G Ultra Wideband and got 1915mbps down this weekend https://i.imgur.com/BuQF13Y.jpg
martin_··on Extreme Debugging
This is a great post, nice work! Once it was identified the root cause was due to it leveraging an ancient stat -- would it have been easier/safer to patch the syscall table to point stat at stat64? Presumably that can be done without rolling your own kernel module?
martin_··on Ask HN: How many of you are employed, self-taught SWEs?
- Why did you get into the field? What did you focus on at first?

I was a gamer - I started by making websites for my team (we were competing on clanbase.com) and then eventually I branched out into various MMOs and made bots/cheats/etc. I then began selling those and realized it was a better source of income than my job at McDonalds (I was ~17 then) and ended up sticking with it.

- What are you doing at your job? Is it everything you dreamed of and more?

Currently doing a stint as a solutions architect but have been a CTO at a startup and Tech Lead at Twilio launching some pretty cool products since then (still at Twilio). I expect to return to the product side after honing my sales knowledge/skillset/improving soft skills.

- How did you break that first-job barrier?

I did a little contracting via some freelancer website, but I won my first real software job by finding a security vulnerability in sendspace.com. I let them know via their support e-mail and shortly after they asked if I'd want to join to fix it, and more. Then, to break into the US I took a job as a CTO massively below market rate at a YC startup with non-technical founders that were paying huge sums for outsourced development and surprised at the value I could bring quickly.

My offer at Twilio was in part from constantly hounding the team for improvements / changes / suggestions to which they suggested I come and help do it. I was also encouraged to apply at Shopify in 2013 after writing this post https://ma.rtin.so/posts/reverse-engineering-shopify-private...

- What were you doing before this?

Studying / part-time McDonalds

- Any tips for the rest of us?

Side projects. Building tangible software will give you a much softer transition into the professional world and a more practical skillset. Be curious. Don't give up, don't be intimidated, and be willing to take risks to get your foot in the door.

I was once treating my window ledge with Linseed Oil and was quite surprised when the cloth set on fire from direct sunlight ignited!

martin_··on Using Twilio to make a call forwarding and voice messaging system
Disclaimer: Twilio engineer

You could forward via VOIP! The biggest downside IMO is losing iMessage, or I probably would've ported mine years ago :)

martin_··on YC W20 Online-Only Demo Day
I'd love to read them also, e-mail is in profile!
martin_··on Show HN: I built a website to better compare USB-C hubs found on Amazon
Nice work, looks like a solid tool - have a suggestion for my recent debacle. I had to buy a dock to use my Apple Thunderbolt Display with a new USB-C MBP. There were few that could do it whilst also offering power delivery. I went with this dock which I notice isn't on your list, nor is the ability to filter for Thunderbolt 2 support. https://www.amazon.com/OWC-14-Port-Thunderbolt-Compatible-OW...
martin_··on Ex-FDA Advisor Says of Lasik Eye Surgery: ‘It Should Have Never Been Approved’
The results do not suggest failure, there are many other explanations for such results. The patient may have expected better vision than they have (eg 20/20 but wanted 20/15), or their prescription wasn't stable so vision deteriorated slightly after 6 months.
martin_··on Show HN: Tool I created to covert tabular data to a 'pretty' table
Any chance of adding a placeholder text for each of the options so folks can see what the output looks like without obtaining a result-set themselves :)
martin_··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hi Peter, thanks for doing another AMA! I've been on an O-1A visa for over 6 years (from the UK), I currently half way through a 2 year extension and starting work on by EB-1 now. Have you noticed a significant change in adjudication, processing times or anything else of note in the area? What parts of the petition do you find get most scrutiny / are most important?
martin_··on Show HN: Divjoy – React Codebase and UI Generator
This is awesome, great work! One piece of feedback is that currently all of the components seem around designing static components. I'd love to see support for lists, dropdowns, etc, and ideally with the accompanying connect code to wire up a store with the renderer
martin_··on Ex-Microsoft dev used test account to swipe $10M in store credits
> If convicted of mail fraud, the former Microsoft software engineer could face as much as 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

It doesn't mention returning what he took... So he steals over 10m and buys a 1.6m house and can only be fined up to $250k? With 20 years in prison, and let's say out in 10 years of good behavior wouldn't that raise his annual income (which is taxed) from $116,000 to north of $1m?

Most of the article is about why the consumer business failed because the sister company tried to do bikesharing
martin_··on Technical Debt
This is great and well articulated! Would you agree legacy code can often turn into tech debt by virtue of being neglected / unmaintained? The debt here could perhaps be measured by operational overhead
martin_··on SoftBank founder lost $130M on Bitcoin
I have no evidence of this, but it sadly (probably) makes sense to apply a paywall after N referrals from a particular domain, or even after X traffic over Y time as a social trick for getting people's peers to subscribe
martin_··on JetBlue has started using facial recognition instead of boarding passes
Interesting, how do you activate that flow? I landed at SFO last night and it prompted for me to insert my passport before it'd scan my face / take finger prints
martin_··on Startup Stock Options – Why a Good Deal Has Gone Bad
Thanks so much for this info! I'll look into it!
martin_··on Startup Stock Options – Why a Good Deal Has Gone Bad
My CPA said the maximum I can do is $3,000/year, I'm also in CA :)
martin_··on Startup Stock Options – Why a Good Deal Has Gone Bad
Yes that’s correct, I don’t think anything nefarious happened. The big bummer, though, is I had $0.01 shares and paid AMT at a much higher valuation and expect it to take a few decades to claim back the loss. Was my first time working with ISOs and didn’t know about 83b’s
martin_··on Startup Stock Options – Why a Good Deal Has Gone Bad
It happened to me recently, here's a couple of snippets document I received:

The TLDR is "The majority of the board has already approved the decision of eliminating common stock and distributing excess payments to two founders and the product lead"

Each holder of Preferred Shares is entitled to receive cash merger consideration in exchange for the cancellation of his, her or its shares pursuant to the terms of the Merger Agreement.

Each holder of Common Shares will not be entitled to receive any merger consideration in exchange for the cancellation of his, her or its Common Shares.

In case interested, here's the full redacted disclosure -- docusigns followed very shortly after: https://pastebin.com/q6q7XMvF

martin_··on Base salaries offered to software engineers in SF, NYC, and Seattle
Awesome tool! Though I'm personally happy to hear compensation isn't weighted based on formal education, I'm not sure I'd f eel the same way if I did complete University... I'm self-taught without a degree, ended up moving from Wales to Silicon Valley when I was 20 and only really felt education was a concern for my first role, and visa. Many of the companies who didn't respond to my application years ago now target me on LinkedIn. It's occasionally awkward when folks asked where I studied, but have gotten used to it now
martin_··on What Working at Stripe Has Been Like
At Twilio we use Donut. The TLDR is with our configuration every third Monday members of a slack channel (#soc-donut in our case) get randomly paired via DM. I've met people from offices around the world which I wouldn't have done otherwise, which has definitely been of personal and professional benefit to me

martin_··on Apple Names Deirdre O’Brien Senior Vice President of Retail and People
Agree, have had so many frustrating experiences lately. Recently my phone was water damaged, so I went to the Singapore Apple Store and was told there aren't any genius bar appointments available for a week, and that's as far as you can schedule out. I said OK, no problem, I'll buy another until I can get an appointment and then return the new one once mine is replaced under Apple Care. I was waiting about 40 minutes to buy an iPhone and then the sales specialist noted that I could, in fact, probably wait for a cancelation and have my phone serviced. I waited upstairs working on their (fairly good!) wifi for about 1.5 hours and then when I saw a Genius who confirmed my phone is indeed toast. The Genius then explained they don't have any phones in stock in my color, can only do a like-for-like replacements and it'd take 48 hours for it to come in stock (why can't this be identified ahead of time?).. so then I waited another 30mins to buy a phone and returned it 48 hours later. Similarly, replacing a damaged or lost AirPod is way too difficult. IMO, it shouldn't require a "Genius", especially in the latter case

(I'd also love to be able to just order a replacement piece online)

martin_··on Apple Launches Portal for U.S. Users to Download Their Data
I was quite surprised it let me verify from the device I was actively using.. Is it really 2FA if it pops up the code on top of Chrome?
martin_··on Ask HN: Is a computer science degree worth it or should I learn on my own?
An O1, which yes has gotten harder but is achievable
