The only things that appear to be under our control is what we say and do (or perhaps choose, as 'saying' is a form of 'doing', e.g. in a courtroom) in any given circumstance. Since that too can be reliably predicted for most people, e.g. I know how my daughter will act if I leave her alone with candy in the room... or how an ethical officer of the law would act if he discovered a million in cash buried in an offender's backyard under the dog house.... which are voluntary acts, but almost always predictable, then the question isn't really what is under "our" control, but more like, who is really running the show? Is cause/effect real, is libertarian free will real? I'd say so. What I have trouble believing is that free will is absolute, meaning, that one does not necessarily do X just because he can do X, and almost always does Y instead (e.g. what is right versus what is perceived as a possible choice, which may or may not be 'right' in the given context), Y being the almost always predictable choice of how a person would react in a given set of circumstances.

Thanks for filling me in. I got my perm residence (a.k.a. 'green card') in 2000 and citizenship in 2006 so I've washed my hands of all things immigration since that time... quite a lot has changed in the law since then. I voted for Obama too :).

Although I can see with Trump's administration wanting to go back to how it was because it's supposed to protect jobs for Americans and others who are green card holder or otherwise authorized to work here.... although to be honest, I don't think they should restrict H1-B spouses (H-4's) from work. My wife basically learned all the movie dialogues and commercials by heart when she was unemployed and just sitting at home, watching TV or playing on the computer... :)

Good thing is, we were able to claim her 'residence status' after one year on H1B/H4 so we could dodge paying out of state tuition in college for her accounting degree... which would not have been possible if she wasn't an H-4... E.g. F-1, J-1 and similar student visas always end up paying out of state tuition, which is at least 4x-8x more than in state, depending on the state you live in.

On one hand I like being able to say we can get by on a single income... on the other hand, not every wife (or husband) fancies herself or himself as a stay at home entity while the spouse is working... people are designed to work and be productive, thus, this reverting to pre-Obama regulations, IMHO, is not wise. Not wrong.. just unwise. Then again.. it's Trump :)

I was an H1-B for a couple of years many years ago, I don't remember spouses (H-4) having the ability to work back then. If this passes, it would be reverting to how it was for the longest time.

From what I can glean about your post, your aim was to be -content- more than -successful-, and from what you've said, it seems like you are (e.g. you speak of more life balance)

Way to go young'un! My advice would be, though it may seem attractive to work at the large behemoths, I'd advise you to go to a startup or a medium size company for greater satisfaction and less bureaucracy/politics.

JavaScript is fast becoming, if it hasn't already, the next rich GUI framework... It was supposed to be just touch up on HTML, now you can't sign in anymore w/out JS enabled. What if I wanted to do a rich client in C# or Qt? Do I need a JavaScript engine to sign in?

sure, if you want to learn how von neumann style architecture inspired programming works.. but some folk I know would curse it and stay you should start with Scheme or perhaps Haskell if you truly want to learn programming :). The truth is probably somewhere inbetween.

Somewhat tangential to the topic, https://personalmba.com/ teaches you more or less all the book knowledge of a fairly decent MBA program, for an infinitesimal price relative to what you'll pay at an Ivy league or even a state school.

What you don't get w/the Personal MBA is the support of your professors, other students, and most importantly the network and recognition ...

MBA is really something one should do if they're passionate about people, relationships - e.g. what any solid business is made of.... more so than about just the knowledge or what school they go to.

there's a lawyer filing a case soon for a woman that lived with her fiance for over 10 years...never married, and they had a quid pro quo sexual relationship...she paid most bills, no rent though, and lived/appeared as if married to him everywhere, but were not in fact married. The lawyer pursuing it says this type of case is almost always ruled in favor of 'common law' marriage. She got shafted by him for another woman and was left out in the cold w/out any money after having spent a considerable amount of her own time and money w/this POS. Now she's suing and will win half the increase of the house he owns and they lived in. I'll let you know of the disposition of the case.
