martimarkov··on Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition
Look I completely agree on the charges. There is no rationale for them. But fix that. The only viable defense is Apple creates an ecosystem and builds the APIs and OS. They need to get paid for the work - otherwise the argument for developers wanting stuff for free is still valid.

Enforce features being available (NFC for example on the iPhone). PWA is a complete joke - I agree. Enforce feature-parity.

But IMO the argument always boils down to the fact the fees are too high. That is the main driver. And like nobody talks about the fact they are the same as Xbox, PS, Nintendo, Steam because we have more mobile developers who want to make more money. I mean the vast majority of apps should most likely not exist - they are just bloatware (again IMO).

What I think would make sense we do a blanket statement for all stores and devices. Either all or nothing otherwise this is not really a problem on ethics or morality but on just pure profits.

martimarkov··on Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition
No, there are already devices which are not wall gardened. Use those.

My argument is that I have bought a specific device (and everyone else also did) instead of the other device being open. So I have already made a choice. Now you (or someone else) comes in and says: Well all of you obviously want this freedom that you chose not to have in the first place…

Yeah I explicitly chose that and I know many people who made that choice. Because they want the piece of mind vs the sideloading. Again are there phones that allow it? Yes, and people have decided not to buy those. My point is - respect that choice and don’t tell ppl (general public) that they want something because it’s more profitable to the developers.

I do expect a future conversation to go like this:

Scammer: Madam, go into your settings and enable side loading. It will then connect to your bank account and I will…

Now click on the link I sent you to connect so I can help you

Malware installed…

martimarkov··on Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition
No, I value my time and my brain. It takes me X wasted minutes to talk to a support person to remove my subscription. That’s not really a good use of my brain, is it now?

If you want the freedom - there are platforms out there. Use those. There is no reason to impose your views on the rest of us. I prefer this level of security vs freedom. When I need the freedom I pickup my Android phone.

The important point here is I have a choice.

Ppl get scammed by phone calls & text messages… it’s an entire industry designed and operating to bypass this brain of yours. And now we are introducing another vector to make it easier. That is my problem with side-loading. The fact that it increases the attack surface for everyone even though not everyone wants it.

martimarkov··on Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition
The EU already did
martimarkov··on Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition
No, I defend it because I actually do not want that. I prefer the Apple experience. I control all my subscriptions from a single place, I only get stuff from the App Store and if I get tricked to buy an app that is not working I can request a refund and I’ve never had issues getting my money back. I also haven’t had a single issue with anyone from my family getting scammed or their details being stolen after switching the to Apple. Before it was a constant “accidental” subscriptions and random installed apps.

What actually annoys me are the developers wanting everything for “free”. Look you customer chose to buy an iPhone. Accept it. You don’t like that you have to Apple? Tell your customer to use a web browser. But I feel there is almost no respect from developers to what the users have chosen and why.

martimarkov··on UK expected to be only major economy to shrink in 2023 – IMF
But also had 13% budget deficit (of its GDP). Other countries had to bail them out of default on loans.

They also said they will get the deficit under control in 2 years and a few months later said they would most likely default.

They had massive tax evasion problems (e.g. corruption) and one of the lowest retirement ages in the EU.

I'm really nor sure how you see corruption given that the government took out loans which it had no way of repaying even with 5% YoY growth. The simple fact is they were fiscally irresponsible. It's a common pattern in the Balkans to just do what is needed to win the elections without thinking of how the country is developing and what is the right course. It stems from the corruption of the political system.

martimarkov··on UK expected to be only major economy to shrink in 2023 – IMF
1. Imports from EU are higher than pre-Brexit and higher than exports. So it's the deficit is also higher than before. 2. The EU does not have the UK as their biggest (40%+) market. Therefore the smaller player is the UK. If all trade stops - yes both sides lose. One collapses economically overnight. 3. The EU can either absorb the cost on its internal market (and sell goods internally for a smaller margin) or export to other players as there are existing trade agreements (again with a smaller margin). The UK does not have access to the same deals. 4. The EU market has a much higher GDP. Losing 1 trading partner even of the of Britain would not take down the Union.
martimarkov··on UK expected to be only major economy to shrink in 2023 – IMF
The EU didn't try to prevent Covid vaccinations in the UK. AstraZeneca decided to interpret contracts. The EU held them to their contract.

As an EU/UK citizen living in the UK - I'm okay with that. The EU signed a contract with a 3rd party company and they are requesting delivery on their goods.

For Greece - I think the level of corruption in the Greek market was pretty obvious so I'm not so too bothered by the "wrecking". If they followed the laws and didn't steal money - they would have been okay.

How can England be so unfriendly and not allow a Scottish Independence referendum?
martimarkov··on UK expected to be only major economy to shrink in 2023 – IMF
But the thing is that the EU is not. Every major power in the EU is predicted to grow their economy and the UK is the only one that is not.

Even if you look at it as a purely engineering problem you'd see that adding more red tape on trade would be most detrimental to the smallest player. In the relationship with the EU, the UK is the smaller player.

I’m pretty sure first amendment does not apply to corporations and their services. The test I normally ask ppl to perform is this. If you think there is some sort of fallacy in it happy to discuss it

Can I kick you out of my hours if I disagree with your view?

Can I kick you out of my bar if I disagree with your views?

Can I kick you out of my platform if I disagree with you?

martimarkov··on The Twitter Files
I find it really surprising and sad that even on HN ppl are just as dumb and biased when it comes to their political views. You are NOT this or that party. Sometimes your side or your heroes or whatever you want to called them fuck up - they are humans. If you don’t hold them to account on this - what’s the point…

Just looking at the comments - it’s pretty obvious that ppl didn’t bother to read the entire thing, talk out of their ass based on what they’ve heard at some point in the past and don’t want to actually debate.

They want to just echo their voice, stay in the amplification room and bicker and argue.

Like what’s the point of even sharing this data if we are not gonna go through it?!? What’s the point of not saying okay let’s see what’s actually here? We are supposed to be engineers and ppl of science- we should accept that if new data is presented it’s our soft obligation to examine it and change our theories and hypothesis to comply with or reconcile the newly observed data.

To me the lesson is that most likely I do the same so I need to pay more attention internally when it comes to something I care about.

If ppl are offended by my comment - don’t be that wasn’t my intention. I just hold everyone on HN to a much higher standard than the general public.

We actually had a very similar issue in the office but maybe a bit different. From time to time an entire part of the office would start having slow internet or almost no internet. Took us a few months to fix (it wasn't really on the priority list and was super random when it happened).

Turned out that it happened when one specific USB-C dongle with ethernet and PD was left powered on but not connected to the computer (I think there were other preconditions as well like it was powered-off and you connect power to it but not a computer to it). The device will then decide to go into DHCP server mode and start sending advertisement packets and the switch would start broadcasting them, the internal firewall would see this and start blocking the switch and in turn turn off the AP that was connected to it so 26 ports would be offline essentially. Most of us were on wifi and everyone who was on an ethernet (3 ppl) would go "FFS internet is unstable again. Stupid switch is probably buggy", disconnect their cable and go on wifi. Plus they never really reported it as they had work to do and Wifi kinda worked so not a big issue.

It was just a really cool moment when we found out what caused it and we fired up Wireshark and looked at the traffic and we were right. I haven't had a moment of so much joy in a really long time.

I mean yes they are - there are so many manufacturers.

With the same argument you can say - open access to every device which will diminish a lot of the security by increasing the attack vector.

Why isn't my TV open or my Xbox or my PS? Why can't I edit the code of Windows is not such a stretch based on your arguments?

Also why should companies be forced to open stuff? They market it as a closed system - maybe respect the consumers who like closed systems. There are options for you - it's other vendors. So you have a choice. But even if you didn't there is no reason or expectation you should have a choice if the market doesn't want to cater.

One possible solution is for apple and other manufacturers to be forced to sell developer devices where the restrictions are minimal or non-existent. That I think will solve your quarrel.

I specifically buy Apple phones for this reason. I have read the T&C and have agreed that I don't get access to specific things - I don't want to ever think about it. I don't want there to be an option to unlock the bootloader, or change the store. I buy an iPhone for a family member and I'm sure there is no way they get scammed like they used to on Android by installing "the new OS update from their computer but they need this downloader or their photos will get deleted - just go in settings and enable this setting".

I want this lock-in because THAT is what I want. THAT is what I bought and THAT is why I went Apple and not Android.

If someone asks me what phone to get I say iPhone most of the time because I know their needs and that they don't want to deal with headaches. If they need more stuff I'd recommend either G Pixel or Fairphone but they I tell them to do the research.

martimarkov··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
In the US I can just buy an iPhone from Apple with no hardware lock. So no.
martimarkov··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
Which company? I'm very curious actually?

But devil's advocate - It's agains apple's Dev ToS and I don't get an itemised bill showing me a breakdown of how much Visa or MS charge me when making other payments.

I want to know the name of the company to see if they do the same when I make a purchase with a debit card.

martimarkov··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
Then don't use Apple - who is forcing you to build for their OSes? Your customers are there? Well maybe they have made a choice to be there for some reason. Respect that or don't go after those customers.

I have made a choice to use apple because I know all purchases for digital products go through iAP so my card details are never passed to the developer in any way. It makes me sleep better at night. I don't want other options.

I don't want to be offered the choice with 28-27% discount because it will make me share my creds (we know most ppl will choose the cheeper option and I admit I will do so as well from time to time).

I don't need the additional cognitive overhead because some developers are unhappy they have signed up to terms they don't like.

Honestly everyone that complains about the 30% so far hasn't given me a good reason other than greed. It's not a better UX, it's not a more secure option, it's not in my best interest (except the argument it will be cheaper but we all know that if possible most if not all companies will just pocket the 28-27%), it's not respectful of my choice of OS (again my reason is that I WANT the iAP as the only option).

Honestly the only thing it lacks for me is iCloud Keychain but even on macOS. I'd love to have that support + shared history so I can use it properly on desktop and mobile. I know about FF Sync but still I do prefer the iCloud sync.

That being said FF has made some stupid decisions - like the lack of homepage on Android. Like... WAT?!?!

So the government will decide what you can buy because… why?

Big corporations want it? Big corporations want the biggest chunk of your money so they want you to have a “complete” freedom of your money so you can spend it on their products.

All these arguments sound to me like conspiracy theories because I don’t see real examples. Show me a scenario where the government would want you to not buy something. Like what would that be? Guns? Yeah I’m the EU they will block you but that’s because it’s illegal.

Do you feel like they will limit the amount of alcohol you can buy? That would be an example. But prohibition has been tried before. Ppl want alcohol and ppl vote.

Also why would the government care so much about what you buy? If their plan was to control you and stuff why do we have so many privacy laws and initiatives in the EU?

Also this seems like a very long term project. Do you believe the ppl working in the government are soooo competent?

Yes but the EU already has digital signatures.

Also if the private cert is in the Secure Enclave it’s harder to leak.

But also your physical passport can be stolen
