The 13th Marshmallow (Yes, 13th)

marshmallow_12··on Hacking a $200 Under Desk Exercise Bike
ok then, i'm wrong. Is it true that more generic manufacturers (assuming they are players in the exercise industry) are also adopting these standards?
marshmallow_12··on Eu_sst: 20% probability for large satellite collision
did they hit or miss?
marshmallow_12··on Eu_sst: 20% probability for large satellite collision
very funny. My sums should take me just a couple of hours...
marshmallow_12··on Eu_sst: 20% probability for large satellite collision
it's 2021 now. They have presumably been tracking the orbits of there large objects for years now. Yes this is literally rocket science, but this collision is only a few hours away. Why can't they do better then a vague 20%?
marshmallow_12··on Hacking a $200 Under Desk Exercise Bike
the obvious problem is that exactly no one in the industry has ever devoted more that 3 brain cells and 5 seconds working out a universal standard to present their data. Stuff competitors! And why shouldn't they? They have minus zero interest in making life easier for their broader (and probably narrower also) consumer base.
marshmallow_12··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
The workers exploited by Amazon will have my utmost sympathy and support.

Up until they make a decision that's not in accordance with what i, the great armchair warrior, decide is good for them. Rejecting my unsolicited advice, means they are ungrateful fools unworthy of my elevated consideration.

All of that went through my head the moment i read the headline. I'm surprised at how intolerant i really am. But with second thoughts, these workers had a choice, they made it. Who am i to say that they are wrong.

maybe some kind of program that lets you read and send emails via sms. you text a request to pull an email, and another command to send one.
marshmallow_12··on Zoom zero-day discovery
give zoom some slack, critics. At least they honour their bounties, unlike Apple. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26664714
marshmallow_12··on Prince Philip has died
i understand victoria did the same. She was a pretty powerful monarch. Maybe even more so than her predecessors.
marshmallow_12··on Prince Philip has died
i think prince william has potential. I'm actually quite excited to see what he will get up to
marshmallow_12··on A man is looking for the friends who shipped him overseas in a crate in 1965
-And, you know, it usually does!

Technically, his scheme did "work". Though it wasn't what we might call an unqualified success...

marshmallow_12··on I refused to become an FBI informant, the government put me on the no fly list
ben gurion is widely acknowledged as being one of the most secure airports in the world. And they get by without all these stupid rules about shoes and liquids etc.
marshmallow_12··on Ask HN: Are there websites to discuss specific books?
.fandom maybe?
marshmallow_12··on The NoPhone
yea. I don't think it's a guy trying to make money with a cute joke that's to blame for global pollution. You're barking up the wrong tree. I'm not trolling you, but i doubt these guys are making millions of their product. They simply want to live. We shouldn't be punishing them for the sins of the Great Polluters.
marshmallow_12··on Facebook does not plan to notify half-billion users affected by data leak
i will automatically give less credence to an anonymous person. They are giving me nothing of themselves, so they expect nothing, and feel no obligation to present the truth. On the flipside, being anonymous, i don't take myself seriously enough. Yes, this has regrettably made me come close to trolling, i've worked on it, but i'm still not close to being fully genuine and i know that.
marshmallow_12··on The NoPhone
i need one which doesn't support 5g
marshmallow_12··on I refused to become an FBI informant, the government put me on the no fly list
we all have to play along with this dumb charade that we know is inherently useless. It's insanity
marshmallow_12··on Ask HN: Is it too naive to believe that DuckDuckGo is alternative
it's fine for lots of things and equally terrible at lots of things. It basically picks up the slack from google, i think. DDG isn't a real alternative, but it does things for me that google can't and vice versa. So i think that 85% of the time it's a good alternative. Of course there's the problem that i can't know what i'm not shown, and it's hard to talk about what i don't know.
marshmallow_12··on I refused to become an FBI informant, the government put me on the no fly list
your answers and the fact that no one is defending polygraphs indicates to me that i'm not far off the mark. In which case, why on earth is the FBI messing around with it? My conclusion, corroborated by this story is that they are not so professional as they would like you to think. This is compensated, probably with interest, by being very heavy handed. But surely that is no way to run a large agency.
marshmallow_12··on I refused to become an FBI informant, the government put me on the no fly list
how accurate are polygraphs? they seem to be uniquely American (though i can't pretend i know that as a fact). I always thought they are really just worthless window-dressing on par with the tsa.I.e it's a lot of bluff and only a bit of substance. Can your experiences substantiate what i'm saying or am i being biased?
marshmallow_12··on Have I Been Facebooked?
what i want to know is where you can find this information. Also, is it even legal for the website owner to hold stolen information.
marshmallow_12··on Uber ordered to pay $1.1M to blind woman refused rides
that definitely changes the narrative. 800k in legal expenses! That's a lot of money. The headline should be "lawyers make 800k by suing uber". How was the damage calculated by the way?
marshmallow_12··on 2I/Borisov, the First Interstellar Comet to Have Visited Our Solar System
if it's what i think they are, they are essentially batteries with a radioactive source. It relies on the gradual decay of the source to create energy which is somehow harnessed and used as a power source. I have learnt here on HN that they last many years, are used on space projects such as the voyager probes, and more recently, the mars rover. They are impractical for other uses, such as powering your fridge and home. And their price is.... astronomical.
marshmallow_12··on Microsoft Coffee
"google in 1996"? Google likes the buns but not the whisky i guess.

(even i'm cringing at the metaphor, but if you think about it, it sums up what i'm trying to say. Pretty well)

marshmallow_12··on Microsoft Coffee
terminated!
marshmallow_12··on Microsoft Coffee
you don't do google justice. They are fully capable of displaying very outdated information. As an example, i recently wanted to look up election results from a certain country, a day after. Google decided to show me some tired, old news snippets from elections in 2015.

"stale as buns" is my phrase of choice.

marshmallow_12··on Wet Country Wireless; How British Weather Killed a Billion Pound Tech Company
I wonder what he meant by "lingering signs of bt monopoly". Only they and i think Virgin actually supply lines. And the price for a landline is absurd. Like completely out of touch with reality. We have to pay extra for basics like caller id and even to call uk mobile phone numbers! Which is totally ridiculous. Landlines have a quarter of the utility and cost 7 times more (easily) then a call/text only mobile plan.
marshmallow_12··on Zero click vulnerability in Apple’s macOS Mail
If Apple are actually serious, why are they taking so long to give the bounty? It's sounds like madness to me.
marshmallow_12··on Myanmar orders wireless internet shutdown until further notice: telecoms sources
but again, if it gets as bad as in Myanmar, a)laws wont help b) we will have bigger problems.

Is shutting down internet a small step towards a coup, as opposed to being the fruit of one? In the case of the US, i don't think it's likely short or medium term.

What about police abusing this power? That's a local government problem, not a national one, so it's different to what's going on in myanmar.

marshmallow_12··on 100M Posts Analyzed: What You Need to Write the Best Headlines
i generally scoff at poetry from a respective of blissful near-ignorance. Most dorms at least, but i recently saw a piece and thought to myself

oh.
