marshallp··on Reddit user captures video of 2012 voting machines altering votes
The republicans are the party of liars. Who is more likely to actually commit these crimes? Republicans. Even the 4 votes thing you came up with is probably republicans spreading lies.
marshallp··on How I made $500k with machine learning and high frequency trading
By that definition you could start claiming everything as blind luck. Why bother doing anything at all, let luck do the work.
marshallp··on How I made $500k with machine learning and high frequency trading
I don't get that. It would be true if he just made a few trades, but the author claimed to be making 2000 trades a day. Over a period of months winning that wouldn't qualify as blind luck.

marshallp··on Mathematics meets real life
Yeah, but this isn't fix-it-in-mexico scam. This is potential med-tech that just needs big-money-mafia to make it rain.
marshallp··on Neil deGrasse Tyson: If I Were President...
The greatest group of political scientists? You're referring the founding fathers.

Why didn't they institute proportional representation? Why did they have an electoral college?

Why didn't they abolish slavery and institute women's vote right away?

This FF worship has got to stop. It gives Republicans some slack to spew their lies about gun control and other constitution-backed tomfoolery.

marshallp··on Mathematics meets real life
Are you saying it will never potentially be a cure?

Maybe it isn't now, but with enough automated testing on mice or pigs etc. it will get to a mature point. This can also be parallelized, so maybe it can be done in a few months.

marshallp··on Mathematics meets real life
Why such drastic measures like giving up. As I said in another comment, too low a claim and people think it's not worthwhile, too high and it's crackpotty. How do I get to the right balance?

Furthermore, I think the medical industry is full of unsystematic people. Every time you see a medical lab, it's a guy walking around physically moving petri dishes. That's why I'm trying to promote in the tech circles, they do overly ambitious things.

Rather than simply naysaying, people should give a concrete reason refuting the claim that focused ultrasound is potentially a cure-all. I can't think of any, and I've put thought into it.

marshallp··on Mathematics meets real life
I've made couple posts about it - including links - over the past week, still got downvotes. People are not realizing the unthinkable is actually thinkable.
marshallp··on Mathematics meets real life
I'm not saying it's available at your local walgreens. I'm just saying, like robot cars were a few years ago, it's an underinvested/underpromoted breakthrough sitting right under people's noses.
marshallp··on Mathematics meets real life
I think you're making that mistake a lot of people in medicine make and what separates them from the tech industry. They're huge pessimists because they don't grok things like physics or computing and are trained/selected for their ability to pass tests out of a textbook. If you put your geekdom "crawl entire web/robot car/computers on every desk" hat on you'll realize you can run circles around the current medical industry.

edit: I get you're trying to give advice. If I make the claims less exciting no-one will bother. If too exciting, they think unfeasible. Getting the balance right seems hard.

It doesn't take long to do a GOOGLE SEARCH. For a supposedly tech themed discussion site there's a lot of closed-minded and google-challenged folk on here.

Focused ultrasound could have been used to do cardiac ablation as well, though it's probably still in experimental stage. It's also noninvasive.

In general, focused ultrasound is the cure to a lot of ailments but is criminally underfunded at the moment. It's a potential immortality device.

marshallp··on The only barrier to entry you should care about
That may true, but I was just trying to point out the attitude of essentially "stealing" money by monopolizing is not good for society. Just add by relentlessly innovating and you might end up better off than sitting on a pile of money. The example of microsoft comes to mind, did the executives actually gain by slowing internet adoption through various shenanigans like IE or did indirectly slow down the advancement society so that it was a net loss for them (less cancer cures/self-driving cars/space rockets).
marshallp··on The only barrier to entry you should care about
How about instead creating barriers by innovating faster. More Elon Musk and less Mark Zuckerburg. The world needs more inventors and less monopolists.
marshallp··on The FTC wants to sue Google, and now it may have found the charges that stick
It's almost certainly google's enemies having finally got through to the FTC. Google's made a lot of enemies, the telcos, microsoft, apple, big oil, big media. The population should wake up realize there's only a few good guys out there, google and maybe amazon, everyone else is evil and an effort needs to be made to stop the evil guys from destroying the good guys.
marshallp··on The Fight
I'll have to disagree with you on that. Genetics is the wrong approach to dealing with all this and was a wild goose chase. Regenerative medicine is the correct approach, the body has all the mechanisms already to regrow itself, after all, it did grow in the first. Regrowing the body and keeping it from being a cancerous growth is the actual challenge. Noninvasive surgery like radiosurgery, focused ultrasound, and photoacoustic surgery is the correct approach along with floating growth factors. This is not really biological engineering but electromechanical engineering and well within grasp. A proper effort would get this done within a year.
marshallp··on The Fight
He's given the typical FOOLISH response people give after brushes with the death plague - live life to the fullest.

How about instead thinking of ways to fix the problem. That can also be considered - living life to fullest - and also fixing the problem.

In his case, he could have considered how can cardiac arrest be better dealt with. Have drones nearby that automatically go towards the patient and revive them. What's involved in that, collecting the data, manufacturing drones etc. etc.

The entire world is focused with having the latest shiny bullshit from the mall/walmart. Go there and see the masses of consumerist idiots picking up plastic crap and clothes like monkeys. How about they instead spend that time crafting a pitch for a new invention that solves a death-related problem on kickstarter. There are 7 billion people, probably only a few thousand of them are working towards actually worthwhile things.

Living life to the full doesn't have to mean buying or building crap to fulfill child-like urges to see shiny things, it can instead be using the "god given" brain to tackle the most important challenges, of which survival is number 1. Animals probably look at humans and think what retards, they themselves spend all their time trying to survive.

marshallp··on Destroying drug cartels, the mathematical way
Legalization is the best way to end it. The network analysis needs to occur about politicians in the rich countries, how to manipulate them into legalizing drugs. It's a lot easier to collect data on them and it's the actual root cause.
marshallp··on Chris Anderson Leaving Wired for Robots
Yesh, I'm trying to intentionally seed HN with machine learning, robotics, immortality tech (focused ultrasound, radiosurgery) to break the web filter bubble. PG and his crew should be getting into the AI/biomed bubble.
marshallp··on Chris Anderson Leaving Wired for Robots
That's why I submitted it. The new thing is robots but the mainstream still thinks web is the new tech. As people shift to mobile, the ad revenue won't be there, google's already experiencing this. The smart money's going to robotics, as it should. There's way more money and societal value in disrupting the physical world.

It also offers the opportunity for precise delivery of medicine, so that you can get some growth factor there (like extracellular matrix pixie dust) and get tissue growth there as well.

Calling it quackery is absurd, thousands of people have treated with it already and companies like GE are investing in it. You must be retarded.

marshallp··on George Lucas Will Use Disney $4 Billion to Fund Education
That's the thing, it's not research. It's like 3d printers, there should be an ultrasound machine in every home. I'd like to see hackers work on it like they did with personal computers so the ultrasound revolution gets going. This is the crowd that can make it happen quickly (ultrasound revolution - daily cancer destruction, fat burning, localized noninvasive growth factor injections for heart/lung/brain regrowth)
marshallp··on George Lucas Will Use Disney $4 Billion to Fund Education
What do you mean? It's a hugely important low cost high impact tech like 3d printers that doesn't get much attention. Why does that offend you?
