marliechiller··on What's Wrong with Tech Hiring
is this just not game theory in practice? If your opposition is not honest, by being honest yourself youre setting yourself up to be exploited, misled or abused in the long run.

As an aside, humans are animals, just smarter ones

marliechiller··on Britain's Age Appropriate Design Code has made inroads into big tech's dominance
Had never heard of this, but what a great piece of legislation. One could argue that given some adults lack of knowledge around what data their apps are collecting, this should perhaps be the default for all users - (possibly even keeping the child-adapted explanations)
marliechiller··on The truth about lab-grown meat [video]
Im a vegan but Ive noticed that most other vegans are not really looking forward to lab grown meat. I on the other hand am optimistic and hopeful. I still miss the taste, texture and nutritional benefits of meat and this will hopefully tick those boxes (with plenty of other bonuses as well). The biggest challenge it seems to me though, is once price parity is achieved, how do you convince meat eaters to choose this chicken nugget over the perceived 'healthier' flesh of a dead chicken. That to me, will be the watershed moment. Perhaps its just a case of removing subsidies on real meat or getting the price point of cultured meat to be even less than real meat so people dont have to make the decision in the first place - their wallets will make it for them
marliechiller··on England's Upper Classes – A Dangerous Cult
Im not really sure of the point this article is trying to make. It seems like a moan about the upper class from a by-gone era.

"This country could do with a lot more Hannahs and far fewer Jacob Rees-Moggs."

The remaining Jacob Rees-Moggs of the UK stick out like sore thumbs and are almost caricatures. I also don't imagine many people are oblivious to the fact that the "aristocracy" (what does that even mean in a UK context nowadays?) made their living off of exploitation. Just as todays elite do but in softer ways (see Bezos).

marliechiller··on How vlogging is empowering a new generation of stutterers
objectively this is false.
marliechiller··on Huawei officially replaces Android with HarmonyOS, which is also Android
yes. google doesnt exactly have the same capabilities as the chinese state now does it?
marliechiller··on Study finds alarming levels of ‘forever chemicals’ in US mothers’ breast milk
maybe - could just be because smoking and drinking hard liquor was more prevalent back then also
marliechiller··on Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger life cycle assessment (2018)
|Second of all, humans form powerful attachments to their kin and peers, and the death of a human brings great and lasting sadness to all other humans in their group. This is not something observed with cattle and most other animals (though there are exceptions), except for short periods of time.

straight up false. cattle mourn death and seperation from their calves very obviously, for days. Heres just a small example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Woulyd9NWFM&list=PLtc3iQTP5E... some cursory googling will support this. Whos to say they dont carry that burden for the rest of their lives? I only show outward emotion for a brief time period after a death, but I certainly have sadness for a long time after and it would be hubris to think something as intelligent as a pig or a cow would be unnaffected enough to justify that for 5 minutes of taste

marliechiller··on Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger life cycle assessment (2018)
serious question to consider it from the other side: if a/the holocaust was occurring in your country and people turned a blind eye to it, would you softly ask those propping it up to discontinue or would you be more empassioned about it? This is the view that some vegans have with respect to the current treatment of animals. Whether you choose to acknowledge it that way or not, I can completely understand why some people adopt "bullying" tactics, conciously or not, especially when some people palm them off as "hippies" or the like
marliechiller··on Is Netflix's Seaspiracy film right about fishing damaging oceans?
the problem is - where do you put it and who takes on that burden?

marliechiller··on Spotify Optimized the Largest Dataflow Job Ever for Wrapped 2020
this is a massive gripe of mine. I remember being able to toggle so many stats in itunes back in the day which gave me such great insight into my listening habits and other cool tidbits. Spotify, for all its ease of listening has removed some of the magic there
marliechiller··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
whats the intrinsic value of anything. currency is just an idea that a group of people all agree to abide by. I wont accept French Francs for payment - 30 years ago they were worth something - now people have agreed it should be replaced by the Euro. there is nothing physically different between the Frank and the Euro beyond the combined trust of the group. BTC is just another example except it doesnt have a physical existence
marliechiller··on Military seizes control in Myanmar
election fraud was a thing before the US 2020 election. It seems presumptive to assume this is in some way related to US precedent

Cant you easily tell where the invested money is coming from? if its coming from corporate accounts then it would obviously be another hedge fund but as far as I was aware these were lots of accounts from armchair investment platforms like robinhood etc
marliechiller··on Python's Type Checking Renaissance
I use pydantic all over the place now. FastAPI was what introduced it to me. Its really nice to be able to take advantage of the autocompletion when utilizing pydantic models rather than a straight dictionary. Now, in a lot of instances I use the pydantic models instead of dictionaries as it feels more explicit

this must be a nightmare for them. for all of the new users theyve picked up this past week, how many will they 'turn off' irrevocably because of this. :/

that is not a fault endemic to white people, but people who are well off. please distance yourself from identarian narratives and treat people as individuals rather than groups of people
marliechiller··on Face masks are breaking facial recognition algorithms, says new government study
This is a classic example of twisting statistics to fit a narrative. That match had ~65k attendance with ~2k false positives for sake of argument. thats < 3%. Not great, but then consider the system is going to scan a vast portion of those in attendance which a human eye alone could not do. Even with the false positive rate, in terms of making human jobs easier, its surely a benefit to scan 2000 false positives than some large portion of 65,000 when checking for unsavoury characters.

thank you for this, that is a fascinating snippet of information that sent me down a rabbit hole
marliechiller··on Those who exercise free speech should also defend it even when it’s offensive
This is a dangerous way of thinking and doesnt help to close divisions that are opening up all over society at the moment. He is a left libertarian by his own admission and there are countless examples demonstrating this fact. Because something has some political overlap in some areas, does not mean it is of the same political ideology as whole. Individuals on both the left and right can agree on freedom of speech for example without being considered a puppet of the other side of the aisle. The same can be said on views about gender, immigration ad infinitum. There is a culture war, correct. But he did not pick a side based on its conservatism, rather he picked a side based on postmodernist ideology
marliechiller··on Those who exercise free speech should also defend it even when it’s offensive
He, and most of the rest of the IDW would not consider themselves conservative at all. In fact, only JPeterson considers himself conservative out of the commonly touted members. Dont misrepresent people because they dont fit your narrative
