markx2··on Reversal of autism symptoms among dizygotic twins: A case report
I was a nurse in the Learning Disability field for 17 years, and cared for many people on the spectrum and dealt their parents.

Many parents carried guilt. Many parents transferred that guilt into anger at people like me (for some reason they thought that their child would get better care in an hospital setting) or would direct their anger inwards and feel terrible.

A simplistic headline, along with no actual research can only make thing worse for carers and families.

Families will demand more. Carers will have a harder job.

I have nothing polite to otherwise say. Thanks though - I've added the appropriate blocks.

markx2··on Neo Geo Architecture: A practical analysis
Years ago, a computer magazine (I think in the UK) did an amusing look into the flip lids of the current CD consoles. Playstation, Saturn, Jaguar (I think) and the Neo Geo.

They placed a penny on the closed lid, and pressed the button to open it.

I forget which moved the penny furthest, but the Neo Geo came last.

markx2··on 5 WordPress Plugins Compromised; Millions of Websites at Risk
Downvoted for the very obvious:

"In other words, wordpress.org does not scan for malicious code."

If they scanned for malicious code this would not have happened.

markx2··on 5 WordPress Plugins Compromised; Millions of Websites at Risk
The email sent to plugin authors:

"As a follow-up on the Andrew Wilder (NerdPress) and Chloe Chamberland (WordFence) reports that uncovered a limited number of compromised plugins, the Plugin Review team would like to provide more details about the case.

We identified that some plugin authors were reusing passwords exposed in data breaches elsewhere. The compromised accounts were not the result of an exploit on WordPress.org. Instead, the attackers used recycled passwords to add malicious code to a few plugins on the WordPress.org Plugin Directory.

First, out of an abundance of caution, additional plugin releases have been paused, and all new plugin commits temporarily need approval by the team. This way, we have the opportunity to confirm that the attackers cannot add malicious code to more plugins.

We have begun to force reset passwords for all plugin authors and some other users whose information was found by security researchers in data breaches. This will affect some users' ability to interact with WordPress.org or perform commits until their password is reset.

** Information about password deactivations **

Your password was deactivated if you are a plugin author or committer. If you have an existing open session on WordPress.org, you will be logged out and need to reset your password."

In other words, wordpress.org does not scan for malicious code.

markx2··on Backdoor slipped into multiple WordPress plugins in ongoing supply-chain attack
I find this astonishing.

I worked at Automatic (in Support / Spam blog hunting / Akismet) in 2011 and after some bad plugin updating from various sources Matt asked me to start vetting wporg plugin updates.

I cannot code in PHP. Lots of reading later I could recognise dodgy code, or code that looked odd.

I set up a gmail account where _every_ new plugin commit was sent to, and I create a ton of filters, each looking for certain code. Those filters were then sent to me and were filtered again - think "Nasty, Maybe, Check"

When something bad happened, I'd review the commits, see the nasty, remove it, update the version, commit to the wporg repo and at the same time take over the account. (Again I can't code PHP but I'm listed as a developer in the plugin repo). That way plugin user was protected.

That was 13 years ago .. why the hell doesn't WP have a better system?

markx2··on Microfeatures I love in blogs and personal websites
Maybe, but I hated that term,.
markx2··on Microfeatures I love in blogs and personal websites
I value links.

WordPress used to have a Links section in the sidebar by default. It was later criticised for the default links being to WP founders/devs. But it was there, and you could change it.

Links are the web for me. "If you like my site maybe you will like what I like".

Go look at https://diamondgeezer.blogspot.com/ - links!

Go look at other sites and if they are WP chances are no link list.

Am I blaming WP? Yes because I thought it was a terrible change. No because other site builders/SSG's appear to have followed.

Links make the web what it is.

We need more, not less.

If I go in .. my patronage has dropped through the floor.

Content spinning is one of those spammy practices that has given us the web we have now. So many sites with different themes and pretty much the same junk content, all surrounded by ads and privacy invading scripts.

It may not be your direct intent for that to happen, but it will absolutely happen.

At least your Privacy Policy appears decent.

markx2··on From Infocom to 80 Days: An oral history of text games and interactive fiction
Loved text adventures since my CPC6128 days. They are about the only things I could still use my Psion 5 for. I have Lost Treasures 1 and 2, and the Classics on CD.

This is fantastic: http://www.getlamp.com/

You can also hunt down the Infocom Universe Bootleg. It has pretty much all the games, bonus games, invisiclues, IUB database, software tools.

IUB.zip is 397.5mb zipped

markx2··on How Alexa dropped the ball on being the top conversational system
I bought into Alexa/Echo because at the time my late wife could not work remote controls (Multiple Sclerosis). She only had her voice.

It was great for her to play different radio stations, playlists, news. It did the job.

I did try linking it to a TV but that was terrible. Slow, janky, unreliable.

Since she died - Dec 2018 - "Alexa play LBC" "Alexa stop"

Oh, if you do have an Alexa device "Alexa, what noise does a hamster make?"

Okay, now explain Multiple Sclerosis, explain Lupus.

markx2··on 500K Prize to Communicate with Animals
"Demonstration of communication in more than one context (e.g., alarm, mating, foraging) using the organism’s endogenous communication signals preferably in an interactive and autonomous way."

I have two dogs, two cats, two ferrets.

Both my dogs can communicate to me that they want to go there, or here, or want food, or play.

Both my cats can do the same,

For both above it is a combination of where they are and how they act and how they react to me.

The ferrets ... a ferret is constantly curious, persistent and the best way to communicate is to switch on, but not move a Henry vacuum, and say "Dance".

markx2··on Ask HN: How do I clean the insides of a PC?
On a dry day.

Unplug. Take it outside, remove side panel, side fan filter, bottom fan filter, any other filter.

Use skewers to make sure the fan cannot spin too highly (which can wreck them)

Use a powered blower like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01G1Z0RF0/

Reassemble.

markx2··on How Shadow Banning Can Silently Shift Opinion Online
My reply to you is not to do with the sentiment about opinions / polarization.

At one time I moderated two large and growing forums - wordpress.org/.com - and there was an ability to shadowban.

You post to a forum, as a mod I see your post and I ban you (for whatever reason) You understandably get angry You make a new account, post again and react angrily to the ban in your post I have no option but to ban you again We end up in a circle This is not good for you or me.

If though I shadowban your anger does not rise, you do not make lots of new accounts and I do not create more work for us both.

For me the key here is that shadowbanning is okay for an established user who one day went off the rails. Let them rant, check their later posts, and remove that shadowban when the calm has returned. But you must check. For new users, just ban, block and use tools to autoblock going forward.

I was a mod on a growing subreddit for almost 10 years. Sometimes a shadow-banned user would post. As a mod we could see the post. We would let the post be published but would also reply along the lines of "You are shadowbanned by the reddit admins. This is how you check [give info] and this is how you appeal [give info]."

Blanket shadowbanning is a bad thing. Such bans must be reviewed.

markx2··on 38% of webpages that existed in 2013 are no longer accessible a decade later
I blogged from 2000 onward but hit my stride with Wordpress in 2004. I posted thousands of times. I had a Google PR on 8 at one point but it tended to be 6/7. In 2020 I decided to shutter the site. The database with the content is still there, it's just inaccessible.

Google, Bing, Archive.org and others I contacted and had them remove my content.

Then I removed everything visible.

Very very happy I did, especially with the rise of AI.

markx2··on Elizabeth Holmes shaves more time off her sentence – CNN Business
"that inmates can earn good conduct time that is calculated into their projected release date. Qualified inmates are currently eligible for up to 54 days of GCT time for each year of the sentence imposed by the court. "

So an inmate benefits from their good conduct time.

The sentence reduction is nothing to do with who she is.
