markx2··on I created a free website that can screen for cognitive decline in 60 seconds
"We have not detected any sign of dementia, with 97.99% confidence."

Dementia runs in the paternal side of the family but from what I know it doesn't start until the mid to late age 70s. I'm 61 so I have a few years yet.

markx2··on Anonymous File Upload
Welcome to a new service for the sharing of illegal images/videos!

"Is it secure?

Yes, we do not share any user data, IP addresses, or any other personal information."

The law will test that.

Thank you!

markx2··on Against Steve Jobs' wishes, Apple may be working on a touchscreen MacBook Pro
To make a screen that is designed for touch will mean thicker heavier screens which has to impact the width surely?

Or will we see "You are touching it wrong"?

markx2··on Reddit is dropping subscriber counts on subreddits
I joined /r/gamedeals as a mod when the subscriber count was ~25k I left when I think it was ~700k That's a pretty good increase, yet despite the huge increase in numbers this was not reflected in upvotes and comment numbers.

https://old.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/top/

There will be multiple reasons why this happened but changing to this new metric - engagement - makes sense.

At one point the sub mods were asked by the reddit admins if we wanted to be in the default selection for new users and we declined. It will be interesting to see how defaults are now offered given that I understand the default was based on subscriber numbers.

Money allows you choices.

It does not buy happiness.

If HN were to be monetized then post submissions would go up, quality would drop, the need for moderation would rise and the site would lose it's place as a quality discussion site.
markx2··on Why is the Online Safety Act causing Bluesky user growth?
"I have some ideas."

So do I. I'm sure others do too.

markx2··on The hit film about overworked nurses that's causing alarm across Europe
It's not just costs.

It is patient (and relatives) expectations.

It is knowing that any perceived issue could result in litigation.

It is that management may well have never 'worked the floor' so have no insight in to what happens.

There may well just not be the time to do all the tasks that someone else had decided needed to be done.

markx2··on Ask HN: A Reddit UI where all writing is done by an AI?
No.

"provide references to the actual submissions and comments" which may well also be AI, so No.

A 'more compelling' mode would be zero AI but given they sold out on AI already it's already circling the drain IMO.

markx2··on Show HN: Try Traffic Road – Free, Fast-Paced Car Dodging Game in the Browser
Love this, you might want to look at putting on itch.io - though there is an existing Traffic Road there.

One issue - start the ride, pressing up to accelerate and then click to go Full Screen. The bike slows, the keyboard is unresponsive.

markx2··on I know genomes and I didn’t delete my data from 23andMe
Data about me and what I click is one issue.

Data that can be used against my children is another.

My late wife had MS. It took her. Insurance companies would love that data to load against anything my kids do.

There are other issues but the fact is that companies will use DNA and every other data point they can to maximise what they take and minimise with loaded terms what they might, just might, maybe, pay out.

It's not about the now.

It's about the later.

markx2··on Ask HN: How to find non-popular blogs and forums?
I'm currently using https://micro.blog/discover along with https://bearblog.dev/discover/ and https://indieweb.org/

markx2··on The bewildering phenomenon of declining quality
January this year a water pipe burst in the kitchen directly over a Belling Range cooker (some 13+ years old). Switched it off at the mains and awaited a visit from an electrician once the place had dried out. The sparky that arrived had worked for Belling, was very familiar with their products. He checked it over, tested, declared it safe. He then added that if something had been wrong I would have been better to get parts replaced rather than a complete new oven - because Belling products these days are much less reliable. I have no data on that, but I can't but believe someone in the industry.

markx2··on Ask HN: Why isn’t Hollywood producing WWIII films in these perilous times?
A deterrent only works on those who think they will lose.

Propaganda works to tell people they will not.

Govt controlled media will parrot what they are told.

markx2··on Ask HN: Why isn’t Hollywood producing WWIII films in these perilous times?
Because they cannot agree on the enemy?

Aliens from Outer Space?

AI?

A foreign Govt?

Your own Govt?

A deterrent to what?

markx2··on Ask HN: People who work different timezones than your company. How sched?
I started working at wordpress.com (Automattic) in 2006. Everyone was remote.

I was in the UK, a colleague was in Eire and everyone else the US. The colleague was (still is) a coder, I did user support. Communication was IRC. The effect for me was that I'd do my full day then stay online as the US folks started theirs. 15+hr days became the norm (I moved into tackling spam as well as user help) and on more than one occasion I'd just work through the night. ENTIRELY up to me, zero pressure, not even implied. I just like to stay on top of things.

Motivation? I was hired to do a job, so I did it.

At the time I imbibed a lot of caffeine but that was as much as addiction as anything else. Kicked that habit before I left.

It took some years but teams were eventually set by timezone +/- a few hours which was good.

markx2··on Man 'refused entry into US' as border control catch him with bald JD Vance meme
2006. O'Hare. I'm close to the front when exiting a UK > US plane. The 'agent' sees an implant (self-done years prior) in the back of my right hand. Calls it 'brutal'. I was directed to sit in a chair until way after the whole flight had disembarked. I was then questioned about my luggage, reasons for visiting.

Some years later "Pull the guy with tattoos". Full search.

Year or two after that, New York, pulled from the queue, directed to stand in a clear box. "Do not move your feet from those markings". My young daughter had to stand and watch.

Another trip. My passport photo did not fit their criteria. "Why did you shave your head?" .. "Because it was hot" .. repeat that whole interaction several times.

I am so so happy that I never have to visit the USA again and it's solely because of the 'people' assigned as 'guards'.

markx2··on British pubs have their own set of rules. Here's what you need to know
What utter bullshit.

In the 80's I was lead to believe that CNN were good.

This article proves beyond doubt that they are in fact complete shit.

markx2··on I healed RSI using only my mind
I think it is very probably related to acupuncture.

After decades of pain, and after blood tests, food elimination and an MRI I was told I just had Chronic Daily Migraines.

I then happened to read about the daith. Went into a reputable piercer in the city and asked for a daith.

"Which side are your headaches?" was the reply.

It was the Right, got a Right-sided daith and the next morning woke to no headache. None. Over 30 years of daily pain gone. Even now I do not get headaches.

I know there is no provable evidence but I know what worked for me and those I know.

I cannot dismiss the TMS thing but the way it is framed feels wrong.

markx2··on I healed RSI using only my mind
According to the consultant, and this was a long time ago, they ruled out Carpel Tunnel and other causes, but there were clear indicators of damage.

At it's worst, if the main three fingers of my R hand touched, just touched, any surface it was painful. It really was RSI as back then I was mouse clicking many many thousands of times a day.

What fixed it for me, apart from slowing down, was to start using a Wacom pen/tablet. Even so, by a Thursday my hand / fingers hurt and I used a splint when not working.

I have read more about TMS since I read your post and while it could fit I do not believe it does. In part because of the very localised pain, and in part because ... it's hard and privacy destroying to articulate but no, it doesn't fit.

As for the daith. It worked for me. It has worked for my daughters. It has worked for a friend and also for a random delivery guy who looked rough one day, I suggested it and he came back a few days later to say he no longer has to chew codeine all day.

If something works for someone, great. But I don't go with generalising.

markx2··on I healed RSI using only my mind
"According to Dr. Sarno, many types of chronic pain are not caused by any kind of physical abnormality or tissue damage. Instead it is attributed to what he calls "unconscious repressed rage". How does that cause pain you ask? The theory goes that the unconscious mind will repress emotions in order to protect the conscious part of it4 from experiencing them. It will instead distract you by creating the sensation of pain. He calls this TMS"

I read the whole article and if that worked for you, great.

My RSI - diagnosed after scans in 2007/8 - was very much caused by tissue damage and all the positive waves in the world would have done nothing. I still have pain now after a busy week.

But then I'm the guy that says if you get migraines you should get a daith piercing as that stopped mine completely.

Us humans are much the same and so very different.

markx2··on AI-powered Coloring Pages Generator
This would appeal to my grandchildren, especially the ability to upload a photo and then colour the result. However, I cannot see, though I may have missed it, what happens to the photo.

Do you retain that? Does it become part of your library? Is it fully deleted after the AI process has completed?

markx2··on Most people who buy your game won't play it
The issue with "The number of games you have played" is the card collecting. Right now ArchiSteamFarm is running on my laptop and is 'playing' games to farm the cards. Cards which I will sell around the Winter Sale and that money will buy me a game or two. It's also the reason that the "Year in Review" stats which Steam produces are, for people like me who farm cards, are fairly pointless. Amusing though. I do get that the stats are useful for people who do not farm cards.

The other issue around the 'buying' of a game is bundles. If I see a bundle in which I want one game and not the others then if the bundle price is lower that the wanted game price, and it always is, then I'll buy the bundle. I might redeem the other games to my account for card farming, but I'll gift to Steam friends if they want them.
