markus92··on RIP to my 8-port Unifi switch after years and years of Texas outdoor temps
So what's the go to brand for decent networking gear nowadays?
markus92··on Not setting up Find My bricked my MacBook
So what way could you prove current ownership?
markus92··on Copycat nutrient leaves pancreatic tumors starving, may inform cancer treatment
Plenty of cancers have been linked to very specific combinations mutations in non-mitochrondrial DNA, IIRC p53 mutations alone are prevalent in ~50% of cancer cases.

About the not eating thing: maybe you can starve the tumor, but who starves first?

markus92··on How Big Pharma reaps profits while hurting everyday Americans (2019)
Absolutely true for urgent care, but most care isn't urgent. If you need a new hip or cataract surgery, that's very much plannable and if you could save a few thousand by going to a different hospital, definitely something to consider.

markus92··on Ask HN: What is the least obnoxious way to ask for cookie permissions?
It's not PII so you can just use a cookie.
markus92··on Seeking comments on the Data Catalog (DCAT) US standard v3.0
Yeah it is. It basically narrows the spec down a bit. For example, it has some specific classes like the dcat-us AccessRestriction class, but it also mandates the publisher of a catalog (collection of datasets), while vanilla DCAT has it as a recommended field.

In Europe, the EU promotes their own DCAT-AP profile a bit more. Same purpose, quite widely used actually by governments, but not completely compatible with DCAT-US even though both are extensions of DCAT. Fun fact, DCAT-AP v1 predates the standardization of regular DCAT v1, which led to some minor inconsistencies. In the subsequent versions that development process is a bit more aligned now.

markus92··on Giving up the iPad-only travel dream
Apple sells a magic keyboard for the iPad pro which also has a touchpad. The hardware is not the problem.
markus92··on From Cyberdog to dataless files: a brief history of iCloud
I have the exact opposite experience, downloaded some books to read on a plane but they were gone when I boarded.
markus92··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
I’ve entered close to 25 times since submitting a I-130, never had any issues whatsoever, barely even a question from the officer. I even got global entry just fine. Dutch citizen here with wife living in the US. My visits are usually on the order of 5-10 days and I do have a strong track record of leaving the country which might help.
markus92··on Phone numbers for airlines listed on Google directed to scammers
Same thing happened to my wife. She called Wayfair customer service, except got a scamming call center that wanted her to install some remote control app on her phone so she could send photos of the broken product. Looking where she got the number from, it was some kind of Adwords scam that seemed to have bought they keywords 'wayfair customer service'.
markus92··on Amsterdam police ask VanMoof customers to stop accusing the company of theft
Ars covers a specific type of e-bike, not the average commuter bike. If I look around the bike parking lot here, I see one VanMoof and few dozen bikes from various brands using Bosch or Bafang mid-motors. No app for those except for the dealership (for maintenance/repair). But that's in Europe, the market in the US is undoubtedly different.
markus92··on Disney, Netflix, and more are fighting FTC's 'click to cancel' proposal
Ticketmaster advertises the full price upfront in The Netherlands, no hidden fees that show up later.
markus92··on PhD Simulator
In theory yes, in practice many journals are only interested in work with a clear novelty factor.
markus92··on EU parliament passes law on user replaceable batteries
Garmins
markus92··on Why does nuclear power plant construction cost so much?
> Making carbon emission expensive you say? Lobbyists have historically stopped that one, so we're back to an issue of political will.

EU is doing it, with CBAM. Basically internally trading emissions and taxing carbon at the border.

markus92··on Instant Brands, maker of Instant Pot and Pyrex cookware, files for bankruptcy
Yup. I have an EU version, the heating element draws exactly 1000W during the pressurization cycle. It takes pretty much the same time to pressurize as the US version does.
markus92··on U.S. TSA expands controversial facial recognition program
Major US airports have this too for boarding international flights.
markus92··on FDA Approves First Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccine
Note: OP posted about the GSK vaccine, not the Moderna one.
markus92··on Why unlimited vacation is bad
Of course I have, but not a whole lot. 6 weeks a year builds up over five years.
markus92··on Apple Pay’s long road to paying off is getting shorter
Very recently, January this year it worked for the first time in an average neighborhood AH for me.

Funny note: Aldi accepts everything, even AMEX.

markus92··on Apple Pay’s long road to paying off is getting shorter
It's not uncommon but a few major retailers like Walmart, Kroger, Home Depot and Lowe's for example don't accept it. It's also not too common in hospitality (they take your card to the cash register, instead of bringing the payment terminal to you).
markus92··on Apple Pay’s long road to paying off is getting shorter
American credit cards work just fine with OV Pay for both NS and regional public transport (tried it with a Chase Visa card). Side note: Albert Heijn also finally started accepting them, so credit cards are now accepted at almsot all merchants.
markus92··on Why unlimited vacation is bad
Yup. Changing jobs and I’m expecting to get 400 accrued hours paid out from my previous job.
markus92··on Why do ships use “port” and “starboard” instead of “left” and “right?”
Double yellow on the road in the UK? You got jokes my friend.
markus92··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
That's not just Brussels, cheese really does show up as C4 on the x-rays!
markus92··on Heat pump sales outpaced gas furnace sales in the US in 2022
This is definitely the the worst case, but in how many places is coal the only thing on the grid? If I look a bit randomly at electricity maps there's barely any place left where it's just coal on the grid.
markus92··on The new Microsoft Teams, now in preview
I've never worked somewhere where the Microsoft suite was NOT used. It's always called a Teams meeting even, not even videoconference or Zoom call.
markus92··on The layoffs will continue until (investor) morale improves
130 AUD for a week is considered reasonable?? For travel insurance even?
markus92··on Why a European mobile operating system can’t challenge Android and iOS
Language, for one. Legally it might be one market but having to translate your service in well over two-dozen languages is a bit of an entry barrier.
