marklyon··on Munro Teardown Shows Tesla Model 3 Solidly Profitable [video]
A CPO i3 might be just what you’re looking for today, particularly if you live in a CARB state where you get the super-extended battery (and generator, if you get the “back up plan” range extender).

I picked up a 2015 CPO with the Tech Package for the very low end of your price range late last year.

marklyon··on Ask HN: My company is being acquired. Should I move from CA to NV prior signing?
You’ve benefitted from the resources and business environment of California. They looked out for you when you were getting started. Why avoid paying your fair share now that you’re successful?
marklyon··on Starbucks to Close All U.S. Stores for Racial-Bias Education
Not the first time they've done something like this: https://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/27/business/27sbux.html
marklyon··on Ask HN: Where have you registered your domains and why?
name.com - they offer consistent discounts for those of us with numerous domains and their control interface isn't as frustrating as the one at namecheap.

marklyon··on Bend, OR, is becoming a commuter town for Silicon Valley despite the 10-hr drive
This doesn't seem worth it. At best you've got a company that can handle this arrangement today, but it seems to dramatically limit your options for new employment or even to survive a changes within the same org.
marklyon··on Ask HN: Which domain name registrar do you prefer?
I've also been quite happy with them. I moved from Godaddy to Namecheap a long while back, but never enjoyed the management interface there. The name.com interface seems to work reasonably well and they offer me discounts on a monthly basis for some of my TLDs.
marklyon··on A320-X DRM: What happened
Here's a Reddit thread discussing the malware: https://www.reddit.com/r/flightsim/comments/7yh4zu/fslabs_a3...

I'm shocked that the company admitted to doing this.

Citizens of Tuvalu are disappointed.
marklyon··on The Internet I Knew (2014)
I had a similar experience with my BBS. We did UUCP with some rather remote nodes and I had 11 incoming lines (the maximum BellSouth would install in a residence) so the bills were not trivial. Each month I’d post the prior month’s bill total and small checks and envelopes of cash would show up in my post office box soon after. It never made a wild profit, but there were only a couple of months where we couldn’t cover the bills.
marklyon··on A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance
My wife’s 6+ was incredibly slow after the iOS upgrade.

My 6+ drained the battery incredibly quickly. I was told that upgrading the iOS would fix that problem [0]; it didn’t. Instead it slowed my phone to the point of being unusable.

If I’d have known replacing the battery would have fixed both of them, I’d have done that. Instead, I stupidly bought two new, very expensive phones. Since we were already locked into the Apple ecosystem (with paid apps and media), we bought iPhones.

This does nothing to compensate or win back the trust of customers like me.

marklyon··on Apple faces lawsuits after admitting it slows down aging iPhones
I actually encountered this with my 6+, which I eventually upgraded. It was quickly depleting the battery, but the tests showed it was fine. The tech urged me to upgrade to the latest iOS, which I was hesitant to do, since I'd heard doing so would slow my phone. I didn't want a slow phone with a battery that died quickly. He assured me that the slowness had been addressed. Wanting to fix my phone, I upgraded. [0]

Immediate slowness, to the point of being unusable, demonstrated to the in-store techs. Launching Twitter, for instance, would take minutes and crash half the time. I then found there was no supported method of reverting the upgrade, though one tech told me that if I browsed YouTube I could find a tutorial. I didn't want to DIY a downgrade and still have the short battery life, so I ended up selling my phone for a very low price and buying a new one. If I'd known replacing the battery would have revived it, I'd have happily done that.

marklyon··on Not Ready for Takeoff: Face Scans at Airport Departure Gates
Now that you mention it, I did scan my fingerprints. Don’t know what they compared them with - I literally crossed the border an hour before by car and didn’t scan my fingerprints there.
marklyon··on Not Ready for Takeoff: Face Scans at Airport Departure Gates
I just went through a similar system at Hong Kong. It worked well and I breezed through the automated gates while a long line of people were backed up at the traditional line. Perhaps they just did a better job of designing the system, but you scan your passport at one station and then step forward into a scannner with a sign telling you where to look. A gate closes behind you. If it fails, it flagged a human to that lane but kept you locked in the box. In my case, it beeped and opened the door into the terminal.

I’ve lost a significant amount of weight since my passport photo was taken. Several human border guards in other counties suggested I get a new passport. One required me to show a second form of ID. The camera system had no issue.

marklyon··on The People Who Read Airline Tweets
I frequently tweet at airlines when I travel. They’ve never bent space and time to solve a problem, but they have followed up on several occasions to make a situation better when I’d otherwise just be frustrated and unhappy. I’ve also had them better explain a policy or process so I could better understand how to plan on the future.

I’ve found that including a photo or even a short video gets the quickest attention.

marklyon··on iPhone Performance Degrades as Battery Ages

marklyon··on Tesla Tells New Taxi, Uber Drivers Not to Use Its Superchargers
I must say, the drivers who use their Tesla as an Uber do a hell of a job of representing the company and making the brand accessible.

I am not fully ready to purchase a car and don’t want to deal with a sales pitch, but got a great overview of the S and X from two different drivers on trips. I got to touch and play with the car. I got real feedback from people who spend far more time in the car than I ever will. Both left me with a positive impression and, as a result, I’ll likely seriously consider a Tesla when I am ready to buy a vehicle.

marklyon··on Comcast is injecting 400+ lines of JavaScript into web pages
The DNS issue was the clincher for me, but I followed their instructions for disabling it and it reappeared when the router was rebooted (not reset).

Overall, I’m rather happy with my current setup. I bought the most recent SB modem available at he time, got an Edgerouter and a Unifi AP. Took a few minutes longer to set up than a netgear or whatnot, but was able to use POE to put the AP in a far better location (it’s actually under my sofa instead of the closet where all my wiring goes) and have had a far more reliable and customizable experience.

marklyon··on Comcast is injecting 400+ lines of JavaScript into web pages
I was told I could not disable their hotspot, nor could I set my own DNS servers. Since I kept having connectivity issues due to Comcast’s DNS being flaky, and not wanting to manually configire every client, I bought my own modem and wireless setup.

marklyon··on Tesla’s promises don’t compute with current physics and economics of batteries
The correct term is “disrupt”.
marklyon··on I hate telephones
Do you have T-Mobile? The Spam Caller thing is actually a feature they implemented a while back. You can set the system to block such calls, but the FCC wouldn’t let them automatically block calls without user permission.

marklyon··on Things I've learned transitioning from engineer to engineering manager
I started by taking responsibilities for small teams and discrete portions of projects. From there, responsibilities expanded. Now I run a team of around 100 and focus most of my day on admin and training instead of actually creating work product. I like the role, but it's not for everyone. Managing is great when things are good, but can quickly get tough when things aren't.

Don't tell your boss you want their job. Tell them you'd like to have an opportunity to contribute in a greater capacity and how you can do that. If there's something specific that thrills you, ask to do that. Put 100% into making sure that thing gets done well.

marklyon··on Fucking Sue Me (2011)
Why is it your responsibility to find them a new vendor? Tell them when you'll stop servicing their account and offer to take reasonable steps to transfer the work to the new vendor of their choice.
marklyon··on Fucking Sue Me (2011)
> I've gotten good enough to read most of them competently. I redline the sketchy parts and the parts my lawyers have redlined in the past.

One of my former clients was great about this. He'd send things to me, but whenever I wanted to make a change, he would always call to discuss the reasoning. He'd then use that information going forward and not need to involve me in the loop. He knew the risks and benefits of doing or not doing the thing and could evaluate whether it was appropriate for the specific project. He saved a lot of money that way.
