marklittlewood··on Jason Cohen's Permanent, Defensible Strategy
Agree on the difference between strategy and tactics but I'm not clear why that would mean this is a tactical issue.

I think the big takeaway from the talk for me is that if team and departmental tactics don't align with the strategy, it's a strategy problem because the strategy isn't clearly defined or reinforced by the individual actions.

marklittlewood··on Are you using Jobs to be Done
Is this a good place to start to understand Jobs to be Done? Anything else out there you would recommend?
marklittlewood··on Starting Out with SaaS Pricing
If you ask @patio11 about pricing, he will probably tell you to double your price. It's a good idea. This is a brilliant, short, free guide about where to start.
marklittlewood··on How To Find Product/Market Fit — A Step By Step Guide
This is a great blog post. If you want to know more, this is Rahul speaking on the subject at Business of Software Conference USA. Video, transcript, slides and an excellent Q&A.

marklittlewood··on Old School Copywriting for New School Businesses
We will publish the talk online (with a transcript), soon. It will be available here: http://businessofsoftware.org/2016/07/all-talks-from-busines...

Alternatively, subscribe to the BoS newsletter and we will email you when it is live. http://businessofsoftware.org/updates/

marklittlewood··on 2018 European Software Conferences. Any Favorites? Why?
Clumsy maybe. If I wanted to be sleazy, I would have used a false account for one or both comments. I have updated my profile though. Thanks.

Apologies. Wasn't meant to be - I thought that was clear on my profile but I haven't updated it for a long while. I want to see if there was a single place for all of the key software events to be listed in a single place and I wouldn't want our events to be missed off as we think they stand up against others. https://www.inc.com/heather-wilde/6-cant-miss-conferences-if...

marklittlewood··on What blogs by tech founders are 'must read' for you? Why?
Many years ago, very few founders did much blogging. Joel Spolsky was an obvious, high profile, exception and grew a huge audience. It's almost baked into the CEO/Founder's job description today that they will write about their entrepreneurial journey.

Who delivers consistently good content?

marklittlewood··on [dead]
Maybe there is a Y-Combinator connection?
marklittlewood··on Deleting Uber is the least you can do
It might be true that not everyone that goes there is like that but it is a fair bet that everyone that stays there fits in.
marklittlewood··on [dead]
I think this might be giving Twitter too much credit.
marklittlewood··on Rand Fishkin, Moz. What I'd Change What I'd Keep the Same What I Don't yet Know
A very interesting, very honest, account from Rand Fishkin of the things he regrets about his time growing Moz. More entrepreneurs should be strong enough to share this type of stuff.
marklittlewood··on Two days left, No one's cracked GCHQ challenge
I thought this was going to be solved using the collective intelligence of Hacker News and Reddit but it seems that with only 2 days to go, there has not been a successful completion of all stages.

GCHQ director Robert Hannigan, who set the string of teasers, offered a clue: "It's not as abstract as you think."

marklittlewood··on Crocodile maths question 'was challenging'
Ha! That my friend, is life summed up right there.
marklittlewood··on David Heinemeier Hansson on Rewriting Basecamp Code, Twice
Hope it will be! We are trying to do something similar with all of the Business of Software Conference talks. The conference is not cheap to attend (but is run in a nice hotel with great food, talks and people. It is unsponsored and space is restricted, so not everyone can attend).

The Hangouts are free to join and give people a chance to watch the talks and follow up with the speakers with Q&A.

marklittlewood··on Software Pricing Guide
This is the best intro to Software Pricing Strategy out there.
marklittlewood··on AMA with Patrick McKenzie a.k.a. patio11 tonight
I want to ask @patio11 what changed - why did he decide to become CEO of a startup?
marklittlewood··on Scholarship Places for Business of Software Conference
Also other scholarships available.
marklittlewood··on Traits great conference speakers have in common
I was asked whether we had guidelines for speakers for the events we run as they would be great tips for someone that wanted to improve their public speaking skills.

Not sure this is an exhaustive list but it seems to cover most of the things that the best conference speakers have in common. Would welcome other contributions.

Written from perspective of audience but many of those things make a conference organiser's life easier too and both of those things dramatically increase the likelihood that speakers will get asked back.

marklittlewood··on How to Create and Scale a Billion Dollar Company
Some very good thoughts in this.
marklittlewood··on Funding a $9 computer on Kickstarter
Handy. Thanks greenyoda.
marklittlewood··on The Great Robocoin Rip-off: How We Lost $25,000 Buying a Robocoin ATM
Like a bank is going to offer trade finance on this?!? Seriously. That should be clue enough.
marklittlewood··on Hive: Free unlimited cloud storage for you and your friends
Funny.
marklittlewood··on Hive: Free unlimited cloud storage for you and your friends
Well spotted. Qvivo seems to have the same approach to transparency as Hive unless I missed something? Almost all the links you can click on the Qvivo page go to email addresses, not other pages.
marklittlewood··on Hive: Free unlimited cloud storage for you and your friends
HN is free but you as users are the product. HN is a fantastic marketing tool for Y-combinator. They do a pretty good job of keeping the balance right though.
marklittlewood··on Hive: Free unlimited cloud storage for you and your friends
Is this a serious thing or are people always blinded by 'FREE'?

There is no way of getting information about the company on the company website, you have to go to the company web app.

So you get free unlimited storage, ad funded and to target you better with advertising they look at your content. This is hidden in the Terms of Service. https://beta.hive.im/terms/

At the company web app, there is no information about the company, the backers, the people etc. The 'about section' of the company is a bunch of marketing speak https://beta.hive.im/about/

There is an address if you look hard enough - in the Privacy section. https://beta.hive.im/privacy/ It is in Hong Kong. There is no information about team, backers etc.

Best of luck to anyone that tries this.

marklittlewood··on A Long, Ugly Year of Depression That’s Finally Fading
My thoughts are with you meh_master. You really deserve better.

Please watch this at some point.

Things can get better but please, please, please try to find the strength to reach out to someone, anyone and open a conversation.

Take a look at http://www.devpressed.com/ too.

Take care and look after yourself.

marklittlewood··on A Long, Ugly Year of Depression That’s Finally Fading
Depression in technology is a very common condition. If you suffer from it, please know you ARE NOT ALONE. This talk is very honest, open and has some really helpful and practical advice.

marklittlewood··on A Long, Ugly Year of Depression That’s Finally Fading
Swombat, that is both ignorant and blunt.

Please don't try to imagine what goes on in someone else's mind.
