markild··on The Dropbox hack is real
Ah.. Yes, but that will leave anyone that has somehow gotten access to my mail to suddenly have access to all my accounts then, wouldn't it?
markild··on The Dropbox hack is real
Honestly curious, what should we use?
markild··on TLS Everywhere, not https: URIs (2015)
Behavior like that needs to come with a huge warning label.

It would be trivial for any man-in-the-middle to block https and server http.

markild··on SteamVR Tracking
Never heard of it. Is it related?

I believe this is the kickstarter video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuWCEpcTbww

markild··on Scythe, the most-hyped board game of 2016, delivers
I find that, disappointingly, it often takes a complicated game mechanism for the game to keep being interesting over multiple play througs.

There are several games that are not too complicated, that also has a charm, but necessarily, more complicated mechanism makes for more variable play.

I feel guilty saying I was looking for this...
markild··on Mark Zuckerberg Gets to Control Facebook a While Longer
> To say that Facebook is "doing good" is a vast understatement

Superman does good, Facebook's doing well.

markild··on Airbnb has expanded into Cuba
I read up on this when visiting in November. Apparently, only US residents can book with Airbnb in Cuba.
markild··on Previously Downloaded OS X Installers No Longer Work
As someone above has already said.

To do this, you'd need to compromise or convince a trusted timestamping authority to sign your signing request with an old date.

markild··on 15 years of VLC and VideoLAN
Yeah. And ending up playing a game of "useful or malware"
markild··on Forthcoming OpenSSL release announced
You get problems like this, but with the amount of overlap in time the different versions provide, with regards to security updates, I'd say its far from unreasonable that one should be able to move over to the next version before stuff like this becomes a problem.
markild··on Is e Normal?
If you go to this[1] page and click "View All", you'll see that it's "Verdana" or "Tahoma", two pretty common web fonts, that are likely to be the culprit.

markild··on Why the Sun 2 has a message “Love your country, but never trust its government”
There are solutions though[1]

markild··on Is e Normal?
Ah, yes.

Brought up here as well: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10966819

markild··on Is e Normal?
If you look at the definition on Wikipedia[1], you can see that a normal number, per definition, is base agnostic.

markild··on Is e Normal?
One can argue that its more a typographic issue than a font issue.

The author probably did see a "pi", but should have been using an embedded font, or even better, the unicode "GREEK SMALL LETTER PI", π.

markild··on Automated Failure Testing
Maybe a bit off topic, but I couldn't find any info on the origin of the name "Molly". Am I guessing correctly that it has something to do with this[1] anecdote?

markild··on Hello World, 1978
> This lot also includes a commemorative 3D-printed Babylonian styled tablet containing the password to a private Github repository where the buyer may access the full source of the Hello World algorithm and an image of the lot.

Too bad it's private. It would suck to have to rethink that algorithm from scratch...

markild··on Skier almost hit by camera drone in World Cup slalom
How would that help? The obvious solution would be to have strict corridors (which it sounds like they had in theory) for drones.
markild··on Philips Hue blocks 3rd party lights
Indeed. I own Hue bulbs, and the only reason I've bought more, after my initial purchase, is because they have an API that let other systems control my lights.

Currently, I'm using home assistant (https://home-assistant.io/) for controlling the lights, and if I ever buy other lights, they'd be controlled from there as well.

What should be interesting now is to wait and see if they lock down the API as well...

markild··on GitHub's Metal Cloud
Also probably a lot better than to make MemTest86 do all sorts of network stuff.
markild··on Rust-Doom: A Doom renderer in Rust, with no unsafe code
There would most definitely be a performance hit, but you would notice.
markild··on Control your server using Whatsapp
Personally I'm very happy with ConnectBot for Android. I'd like to know why he considers this a better option.
markild··on Kilogram conflict resolved at last
Not a typo, but maybe a bit vague. I meant to say that the SI units both are dependant on the real world kilogram object.
markild··on Kilogram conflict resolved at last
There are seven so called "base units" defined in the SI; meter, second, mol, ampere, kelvin, candela and kilogram [1].

Of these, mole and kilogram are dependent of the kilogram.

edit: this is a good, if maybe a bit misleading, illustration: http://www.nist.gov/pml/wmd/metric/upload/SI_Diagram_Color_A...

markild··on Things you can do with ZFS [video]
Things you can't do with ZFS:

- Use it together with GPL-licensed software

markild··on 5000 Years of Interest Rates
Incidentally, what you would get for $1 in year zero would differ hugely from what you'd get today.
markild··on Dynamic 3D Avatar Creation from Hand-Held Video
That was _seriously_ cool!

I tried browsing through the paper, but I'm still not entirely sure on how real-time this is. Are they using only a smartphone as both capture and rendering hardware?

markild··on Securing Email Communications from Facebook
Yes, but they could just start signing the mail. There's no reason to encrypt the content if proof of origin is what they want to provide.
