markild··on The New Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL2) Architecture [video]
I've used it a bit, though not extensively, and I've seen no issues.
markild··on I abused 2FA to maintain persistence after a password change
I've noticed that multiple sites that have two factor enabled give you the option to add a device, but not list or remove existing ones (without wiping them all).

At a glance, Google does not seem to enable you to do this, but might actually do it behind the scenes anyways.

markild··on Fortnite teen hackers 'earning thousands of pounds a week'
I hate the tendency to demand phone number to activate two factor. I see no practice reason why not simple TOTP isn't good enough. It's probably not a practical reason though...
markild··on Open Location Code
Couldn't you "kinda" achieve the same with MGRS?

I've seen a few maps where the first page states what grid zone and 100,000-meter zone the map is in (for the honolulu-example, "Honolulu" would imply 4QFJ).

markild··on The Slide Rule
I've done this a lot of times.

Basically, the reason is, I want to make as much as possible of something from the ingredients I have. Just find the constraining ingredient, calculate the ratio, and you're set.

markild··on Advantages of monolithic version control
That seems very weird. Do you happen to know the reasoning behind it?
markild··on What does code readability mean?
Only in the context of writing as an art form.

There are many other scenarios where writing is used as tool simply to convey meaning. Like this comment.

markild··on Feature comparison of ack, ag, git-grep, GNU grep and ripgrep
Not exactly sure what it is, but I really like this presentation format.

Thank you, have been trying to motivate myself to switch to ack/ag for a while. This seems like it might be what I needed.

markild··on App with local notification will crash iOS Springboard on Dec. 2
Expired certificate, maybe?
markild··on Switching from 1Password to Bitwarden
I agree that Keepass isnt't optimal, but what I find to be its main advantage is that you're fully self reliant.

I'd love to see an easily self hosted version of this.

markild··on Deepo: a Docker image containing almost all popular deep learning frameworks
Why?

Would be interesting to hear about what your use case is, and how it works for you.

markild··on Trezor hardware Bitcoin wallet – Security glitches reveal private keys
Yes, I'd say so.

You would probably not own a hardware wallet without storing the keywords for recovering the private key on paper (or similar). At that point it is more or less how you store the paper that will affect your level of security.

markild··on Trezor hardware Bitcoin wallet – Security glitches reveal private keys
The selling point of hardware wallets is that they do the signing for you, in an assumed safe sandbox.

I believe to make an analog with paper, you would:

- Spin up an offline VM with some bitcoin wallet software capable of doing offline signing.

- Import your private key

- Import the transaction data in a controlled matter, e.g QR code

- Sign the transaction

- Transport the signed transaction back to an online device in a controlled manner, e.g QR code

- Publish the transaction with the online device

markild··on Jeff Varasano's Famous New York Pizza Recipe (2008)
I will not claim to honestly "know" pizza, but in my experience, turning your oven up to max with a baking steel (or stone), can give great results, without the need of anything that breaks the bank.
markild··on Better Git configuration
Sounds like you want to work on a separate branch. Also sounds like you'd want to rebase onto the correct branch when done, so that you can reorganize commits
markild··on Dell’s 32-inch 8K UP3218K Display Now for Sale
Long story short, it depends..[0]

In most cases, I'd guess that most people mean 3840×2160.

markild··on There’s Something Funny in the Air on Mars
I didn't interpret king_magic's comment in the way that it was deceitfully dishonest, but that it was dishonest in that it lacked date. As in, that it is inherently dishonest not to publish with a date, and there doesn't necessarily have to be a dishonest intent behind it.
markild··on Oracle acquires Dyn
Dyn is much more a dynamic DNS provider, though that is probably what "most" people know about.
markild··on 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV
I'm very much ready to jump on the hype train for Android Auto, but sadly there's still a long list of countries they don't serve[1]

> The Android Auto app is currently available in the following countries: Argentina Australia Austria Bolivia Brazil Canada Chile Colombia Costa Rica Dominican Republic Ecuador France Germany Guatemala India Ireland Italy Japan Mexico New Zealand Panama Paraguay Peru Puerto Rico Russia Spain Switzerland United Kingdom United States Uruguay Venezuela

markild··on The Mission to Save Vanishing Internet Art
Have you seen this project[1]? It's a pretty customizable piece of software that has support for a lot of web comics out of the box.

Obviously, re-hosting web comics is a murky, at best, territory, but this will easily allow local only access for your personal benefit.

markild··on Distrusting New WoSign and StartCom Certificates
WoSign's response[1] might also be of interest in this context.

They seem to take, at least partially, ownership of the issues. Am I also correct in that this only affects intermediate certificates? I see they say that they will have a workaround in place in about a months time.

markild··on [dead]
Don't know why this got flagged, but I find it to be an interesting, albeit incredibly sad, story.
markild··on Analyzing the Patterns of Numbers in 10M Passwords (2015)
Yeah. Reading a bit more into it, I think you're right.
markild··on Analyzing the Patterns of Numbers in 10M Passwords (2015)
Looks like a few of the patterns in his analysis has a tendency towards Benford's Law[1]

markild··on English man spends 11 hours trying to make cup of tea with Wi-Fi kettle
YES!

Light switch not online, still switches lights. Smoke detector not connected to wifi, still beep when detecting smoke.

The "smart" part is for convenience, not to create unnecessary dependencies. I'm a bit tired of seeing things that obviously only need access to local resources fail when the internet goes out.

markild··on Solvespace – parametric 2d/3d CAD
Anyone care to weigh in on how this compares to FreeCAD?
markild··on The ‘Dyson Sphere’ mystery deepens: Star keeps dimming
If they were building a Dyson sphere today, it would still be unimaginable. A construct of such complexity and magnitude, that we have almost have trouble _thinking_ about it.

I have a hard time thinking that any intelligent life we were to encounter would be on "our scale", in either direction. They would likely be vastly superior or vastly inferior. Think "they are ants, we are human" or worse "we are ants, they are human".

markild··on The ‘Dyson Sphere’ mystery deepens: Star keeps dimming
He.. She.. It.. They? Didn't create the sphere though!

To anyone not getting the reference, read Pandora's Star by Peter Hamilton[1]. It's a lovely read.

markild··on Scalable and secure access with SSH
Would be interested in hearing this as well.

Could be that you would want to have a more generic interface for your containers, and not have to integrate too tightly with your container framework?

markild··on Warren Buffett's Net Worth by Age
It looks like a logarithmic axis.

A nice way to think of it is that a linear line on a logarithmic axis would look exponential on a linear axis.
