markhalonen··on We switched from Next.js to Astro (and why it might interest you)
I recently evaluated web tech stacks and my thesis is that Next.js is the most powerful and will win in the long run, but right now it's a bit too new for most web projects -- the ones that are low-traffic, simple apps. Migrating your codebase to another version is just not that fun, and I deemed that still too common in Next.js
markhalonen··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
implementing double-entry accounting for the 10,000th time in human history on our ERP/MES product.
markhalonen··on Eight Years of GraphQL
I can say with 100% confidence that GraphQL via Postgraphile & TypeScript is a stellar tech stack for web applications beyond "hello world".

If you are building on Postgraphile and raising from angels, dm me.

markhalonen··on Show HN: OneUptime – open-source Datadog Alternative
we've been pretty happy with just a Clickhouse DB and sending metrics directly from api servers to Clickhouse HTTP https://clickhouse.com/docs/en/interfaces/http . Hook up Grafana and you have a nice raw SQL (our team loves SQL) Grafana dashboard.
markhalonen··on 900 Sites, 125M accounts, 1 Vulnerability
at Steelhead we use RLS (row level security) to secure multi-tenant Postgres DB. Coolest check we do is create a new Tenant and dbdump with RLS enabled and ensure the dump is empty. Validates all security policies in 1 fell swoop.
markhalonen··on Greenmask: PostgreSQL Dump and Obfuscation Tool
Postgres can do a pg_dump with RLS (Row Level Security) enabled to only get 1 tenants data. Very convenient if you use RLS already, if you don't, wouldn't take too long if you have tenant_id on every table
markhalonen··on What was behind Microsoft's layoffs of over 20k people in the last year?
Elon's algo is to push hard enough such that consequences are observed, then pull back a little. In twitter's case, moving an entire data center over christmas break was a too fast.
markhalonen··on What was behind Microsoft's layoffs of over 20k people in the last year?
they don't care about mDAU anymore, that was for public markets. Elon's metric is "unregretted user minutes", however that is measured idk
markhalonen··on What was behind Microsoft's layoffs of over 20k people in the last year?
He admits he overpaid for it, not that cutting tons of people was a mistake
markhalonen··on What was behind Microsoft's layoffs of over 20k people in the last year?
Works fine for me and a lot of other people. What other site gets used for official announcements? Democrats still use it
markhalonen··on What was behind Microsoft's layoffs of over 20k people in the last year?
I would say Elon cutting 80% of Twitter to no real consequence is the real driver. Everyone is asking "are we Twitter 1.0?"

Edit: actually increased engineering velocity

markhalonen··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2023)
Steelhead | FullStack Engineer | On-site (Calumet, Michigan) or Remote (EST) US only | FTE Steelhead is a SaaS for job shops.

Our customers rely on Steelhead to do work like PowderCoating, Anodizing, and Plating for customers like Tesla and John Deere.

markhalonen··on SQLedge: Replicate Postgres to SQLite on the Edge
We're currently grappling with trying to build a system similar to https://stripe.com/sigma with a single multi-tenant Postgres db as the source and an SQLite read replica per tenant. Currently we re-generate the world every night. We need fine-grained control over the SQLite schema (it's a public api we let users write sql against). Any related projects would be great to point me towards!
markhalonen··on Ask HN: For advice: I'm a mathematician looking for a plan B outside of academia

The irony!

markhalonen··on Why software projects take longer than you think: a statistical model (2019)
Related project of mine is https://uncertain.io/ -- I have no statistics background but this is a caveman chart drawing tool that I thought made sense
markhalonen··on TypeRunner – High-performance TypeScript compiler
Very cool -- developer experience on larger TypeScript projects has poor performance. Auto-complete is perceptibly slow. Interesting to see this project and Bun get thousands of stars in just a couple days, the People want Performance!
markhalonen··on LastPass confirms hackers had access to internal systems for several days
would be cool to have 2 password managers that each store 1/2 of all passwords. Then you login to the 2 password managers and a client-side plugin does the concatenation.

The chances of LastPass and a competitor getting hacked is very low.

Password manager is insanely convenient, but its all your eggs in one basket

markhalonen··on Shipping Multi-Tenant SaaS Using Postgres Row-Level Security
This was a shock to us after using RLS for a while. The solution outlined here worked great for us: https://www.benburwell.com/posts/row-level-security-postgres...
markhalonen··on Show HN: I built a website to find nearby cafes to work remotely from
I've found libraries to be superior to cafes for working -- dead quiet. Funded by the taxpayer, so zero financial worries, just a public space. Free WiFi, Printer, etc. Nice chairs too
markhalonen··on Flutter is the most popular cross-platform mobile SDK
The huge downside of Flutter is no support for CodePush service such as https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/appcenter/distribution/code.... For a startup, being able to deploy new product to the customer in 5 minutes vs 24 hours is gigantic! Here is GitHub discussion of why Flutter can't do it: https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/14330
markhalonen··on Show HN: Tadpole – Generate a Scenarios Table for Gathering Requirements
Tadpole is a free tool that simply takes in user variables and generates a table of all the combinations of those variables. I found myself building these tables manually when specifying system behavior, so figured I'd build a nice little web app!
markhalonen··on Signal is having technical difficulties
the acquisition https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23102430
markhalonen··on Signal is having technical difficulties
I was tempted to self-host, but went with https://element.io/matrix-services

If I had an IT department and a secure server center I would for sure self-host. In the mean time I will get used to the tech and support the cause

markhalonen··on Signal is having technical difficulties
After getting burned by Keybase, I didn't even look at Signal. I am curious to see how Signal works in the long term without a revenue model.

I paid for Matrix and got my team on it, working great.

The nice thing about paying for something is you know what it costs.

markhalonen··on RCT of Intermittent Fasting

markhalonen··on Prisma Raises $12M Series A
a similar open source project is Postgraphile: https://www.graphile.org/postgraphile/

I've used it on 3 non-trivial projects with great success

markhalonen··on Hasura raises $9.9M to simplify GraphQL
Reading this makes me so glad I picked Postgraphile.
markhalonen··on Hasura raises $9.9M to simplify GraphQL
After using GraphQL with code-generated Typescript types on the response, I can't imagine going back to REST and it's "hope and pray" the JSON looks how you expect it to look
