I'm so so pissed when I read about corruption like this. Or whenever I have to use Healthcare.

Both are horrible because of government. Your taxes go to waste. Your government enforces Regulatory capture.

Why is healthcare unaffordable? Regulatory capture has made healthcare unnaturally expensive and half your income is sent away in taxes (payroll tax, federal income tax, state income tax, social security tax, medicare tax, Medicaid tax, property tax, sales tax)

Why is no political party addressing this? How has there been no counterbalance to corruption?

marketingPro··on No-till no-herbicide farming system in trial since 1981
I didn't know such a problem may be coming.

Would everyone composting solve this?

If anyone was unaware, urine is high in nitrogen and when added to compost is like "adding gas to fire, but slower". I never had an issue with Nitrogen in my compost.

I can see nitrogen going to waste if food ends up in a landfill, but I imagine our sewage systems recycle this for profit.

Is this manageable with habit changes?

You aren't wrong.

Google has screwed their biggest fans too many times and we aren't Apple drones that can be pushed around.

Absolutely do not expect long term support.

I'm more curious if the community will be able to keep the project alive or if Google is going to keep the project theirs.

marketingPro··on 'I'm sick of influencers asking for free cake'
I run a website that would appear to have a ~100k to 1 million visitors/yr if you looked it up on Alexa.

That said, the difficulty to funnel someone into clicking a link is insane and unpredictable.

Influencers may have 1M followers, but the visitors are not there for the human. They are there for the eye candy, the comment section, or information.

An advertisement is none of these. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to funnel someone who is barely interested in the content they are subscribed to, to buy something from an Ad.

But hey Nike figures out a way to turn this into profit.

0 ROI? Are you aware of the total monopoly they have in parts of the country?

Without lobbying, competition would have destroyed profitability of telecommunications.

If you get caught up in details, you won't be able to understand.

marketingPro··on Ask HN: Why are there no open source 2d printers?
I completely agree. But given I got 4 downvotes for offering to contribute to a FOSS, seems like demand is low.
marketingPro··on Ask HN: Why are there no open source 2d printers?
If this topic turns out to be the start of a FOSS, I'll join as a (senior) design engineer.

Find one that doesn't have a patent and reverse engineer it.

I imagine the first/original control system was extremely difficult to develop. But since the technology already exists you can reverse engineer it.

After that, you pay a supplier to make parts. In my experience, these suppliers will end up redesigning to match better with their process, but still meets critical specifications.

I'd post my contact info, but I believe I'm targeted by an HN mod.

marketingPro··on I found black-hat content marketers: sockpuppet bloggers, fake Reddit/HN accts
That is not a good indicator. Your mind can always rationalize something.

Imagine if a large corporation bought ~50 old accounts and spoofed different computers/browsers. Only 5 votes is needed to hide a post.

Controlling the narrative is almost trivial if you can spend mere thousands of dollars.

marketingPro··on I found black-hat content marketers: sockpuppet bloggers, fake Reddit/HN accts
1 or 2 posting accounts, hundreds or thousands of upvoting accounts.

All of this can change the narrative.

marketingPro··on I found black-hat content marketers: sockpuppet bloggers, fake Reddit/HN accts
The biggest companies can astroturf and never get caught because they can pay a premium for high value accounts.

Anything pro S&P500 should be suspect, especially when the comments are defending bad news.

Heck if Aldi astroturfs on reddit Frugal, you bet everyone else has a reputation management team outsourced for plausible deniability.

marketingPro··on I found black-hat content marketers: sockpuppet bloggers, fake Reddit/HN accts
I've never thought HN was impartial. The fact that discussing astroturfing is against the rules was highly suspect.

I consider this a highly censored website with particular objectives, but a decent userbase.

marketingPro··on The real prices of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini
That's just marketing speak. They have no issue giving your data to governments. PRISM for a US example.

If not for Snowden we wouldn't know this. How many other governments and Corporations are getting data?

marketingPro··on FreeYourMusic lets users migrate their playlists off Spotify
Need this for Google play/youtube music.

Worst case I use OCR/mechanical turks in the future because I took screenshots.

marketingPro··on Teens' mental health did surprisingly well in quarantine
I took a second to think about how I'd respond to a survey that asked these questions.

I'd lie. I don't want to get singled out for home abuse or bullies. There are people that have it worse. And having to talk to people that are powerless to remove bullies is a huge mental drain.

marketingPro··on Teens' mental health did surprisingly well in quarantine
I think you will have bullies in every situation. Had to deal with them in sports too.
marketingPro··on Teens' mental health did surprisingly well in quarantine
When I first heard the home abuse story I shivered because I had a mere mild version as a late teenager. I literally trained for a marathon because that meant 2-4 hours/day away from the house.

The only good that came out of it was that I studied so freaking hard so I could get a job and move out.

There was no empathy for this demographic, but lots of empathy for 70+ year olds.

marketingPro··on Teens' mental health did surprisingly well in quarantine
The first people I saw to break quarantine laws were teens who met up at the park, then went to someone's house to play basketball.

No school + get to see your friends? Yeah I can see that being good for mental health..

My 29 year old single male friends? Multiple told me they were going to try to get anti depressants. They refused to link it to the quarantine (politically they were in full support of the quarentine).

And me? Unemployment with my 1 year old was fun for 3 months. By month 5, the kid learned how to rule the household. I'm so glad I'm hired and the kid is in daycare.

marketingPro··on San Francisco Apartment Rents Crater Up to 31%, Most in U.S.
Ofc you don't quite get that.

But the longer I've worked for big companies, the less I think a big company needs these.

There are departments for new ideas, they can be calculated for profitability by a different department.

An engineer has a great idea from brainstorming with coworkers, how often does that make it into production? Instead of focusing on the job, the Engineer is working on a project that never happens.

I guess that sounds pessimistic, but I've rarely seen anything come from the bottom up.

marketingPro··on Norway officially accuses Russia for cyberattacks on parliament
Why do you think HN is better than Facebook? It's definitely not more reliable. There's less mods, so there is high risks of disinformation.
marketingPro··on The ballooning money supply may be the key to unlocking inflation in the U.S.
It's not a commodity though.
marketingPro··on Google is killing unlimited Drive storage for non-enterprise users
I requested an export of my data from Google this weekend. They will lose my precious data.

And I recently had a bug with the transition from Google play music to YouTube Music. It seems I lost my premium membership, I'm not sure I'll re-buy these services.

Reading people's take on tech stocks long is laughable. In 1 year I have reduced my google usage in half, email and search only.

And search I've reduced due to SEO gaming. Bing can be better.

marketingPro··on The ballooning money supply may be the key to unlocking inflation in the U.S.
Do not use CPI as it doesn't take into account technology improvement and outsourcing.

I'd take the big mac index over CPI.

marketingPro··on The ballooning money supply may be the key to unlocking inflation in the U.S.
Wow, taco Bell literally raised their dollar menu prices 19 cents and 29 cents depending on location.

Mcdonald's removed their dollar menu.

That and stock prices has me pointing to inflation.

2 solutions-

Everything must happen in-person on paper, typed by computers, offline. I've already gotten in the habit of having friends leave their phones in the house and go on a walk when talking about sensitive information (tech IP)

For propaganda/astroturfing, stop using websites that don't require verification. There should be a real person behind every comment. Anonymous websites still will exist, but that's less trustworthy than someone putting their reputation on the line.

Edit-added emphasis on having anonymous websites since it wasn't being read.
