markeroon··on The slow death of the electric guitar
If you want to argue that Taylor Swift is technically inferior then that's fine, but tens of millions of young women disagree with assertions of her "artistic inferiority", and I'd be curious to know why your opinion matters more than theirs.
markeroon··on Apple is struggling to become an AI powerhouse
You gotta train on something though
markeroon··on John Paulson’s Fall from Hedge Fund Stardom
Saying that the bonds were garbage was not incorrect. It just took a lot longer for most people to realize it
markeroon··on Ask HN: How do you keep improving?
I'm not sure that this is the way. It's much easier to get a small amount of knowledge about a lot of topics. If you want to be a generalist then that's great, otherwise, I think it's important to keep asking yourself "How can I drill deeper?"

This is specifically regarding the third point; I agree with the first two!

markeroon··on Twitter allegedly deleting negative tweets about United Airlines incident
Do you have a better way to govern large corporations than shaming them? This isn't a pers-- sorry, forgot that this is America we're talking about.
markeroon··on Forty percent of the Bay Area wants to leave, says new poll
(Which is why I rent.)
markeroon··on Forty percent of the Bay Area wants to leave, says new poll
Yeah the housing market really needs to cool off, it's getting pretty concerning.
markeroon··on Deep Work: A welcome kick in the butt
I'm the same. I find playing hockey, basketball, etc to be the most "relaxing" of all activities. The only way I can really switch off is by doing something else.
markeroon··on Google Brain Residency Program – 7 months in and looking ahead
MS research has historically been fantastic in computer vision.
markeroon··on A New Real-Estate War in Silicon Valley
Well, for the people who have a tent controlled apartment it's certainly not terrible for controlling cost. Be more specific.
markeroon··on A New Real-Estate War in Silicon Valley
Rent control in Toronto is a godsend. Housing prices may be out of control but rent is still reasonable.
markeroon··on My Venezuela Nightmare: A 30-Day Hunt for Food in a Starving Land
Uhhh... how about almost every Nordic country?
markeroon··on Toronto is poised to become a producer of tech startups
It mentions Waterloo because it's one of the best EE/CS schools in the world.
markeroon··on Inside Palantir
Yeah really, I was going to make the same comment. UofT is outstanding.
markeroon··on Steam now accepts Bitcoin for purchases
That's quite a straw man, bud.
markeroon··on What Happens When Baseball-Stats Nerds Run a Pro Team
Good call. 800m-10km track races too.
markeroon··on The Science of Making Friends
This is spot on.
markeroon··on Off the Grid

markeroon··on Canada’s tech startup sector wants easier access to hire top foreign talent
Came here to say the same thing, it's such a joke. We lose huge amounts of talent to the US because of the joke that is Canadian tech salaries.
markeroon··on Lee Sedol Beats AlphaGo in Game 4
This is great stuff, thank you.
markeroon··on How to Pass a Programming Interview
If someone else is well versed in complexity then it's fine to hire a js person with no knowledge of it.

If you're expecting the candidate to produce performant code, they may need said knowledge.

markeroon··on What My PhD Was Like
All I can say is, I was exactly where you are now. You sound like you're on the right track, sometimes getting publications accepted takes a long time. Good luck to you.
markeroon··on Mental health in startups
I think it's both. I mean, just look at the variance in response to caffeine that people have. The nervous system clearly comes into play in all this.
markeroon··on Mental health in startups
Not sure why you're being downvoted, but yes, of course. The same issues can be found everywhere.

It isn't just startups themselves that cause these issues, there's a predisposition. My cofounders way back when could handle the pressure just fine.

I'd recommend anyone who is experiencing mental health issues to talk to a therapist. CBT is good for panic, and psychotherapy is good for anxiety and depression (imo.)

markeroon··on GitHub responds to Dear GitHub letter
They often have issues, in my experience. Not bad, but shouldn't be the backbone of every package manager out there.
markeroon··on Is serotonin the happy brain chemical?
Meditate. It won't fix everything but it helps.
markeroon··on UK government urged to use Bitcoin-style digital ledgers
I agree with the above and you make a fair point, mine still stands though: a decent distributed db could still do substantially better.
markeroon··on UK government urged to use Bitcoin-style digital ledgers
Well, the above poster is half right. Blockchains don't scale as well as, say, a distributed database. It's not due to computational constraints, it's the amount of data handled by every node.

Bitcoin can currently handle about 2 transactions per second.

markeroon··on Reflection on Brent Yorgey's Haskell Class
Chris and Julie are doing a great job -- I've been enjoying working through it.
markeroon··on Ask HN: Struggling to pay rent this month. Can I help you with a gig?
Hope things turn around for you.
