mariusz79··on This drone ambulance concept has the potential to save more lives
It's a drone so we can assume that at least most of the piloting will be done by the computer. So you could have EMT just enter the address press "Fly", adjust lever to Fast and wait.
mariusz79··on Fab Lab – The Machines
Honestly, I would pay for a website like this but with even more stuff. English is my second language, but I currently reside in an English speaking country, and sometimes when I need something specific for some machine, car, dryer etc. I have to spend just too much time trying to learn names of parts needed to fix stuff.
mariusz79··on Want Elon Musk to Hire You at Tesla? Work for Apple
"Automakers from around the world are rushing to set up offices in the Bay Area to tap the engineering talent. "

An honest question - is this really because of the talent, or simply because people there tend to work more?

When you have so many people competing for engineering jobs I expect that people, especially the ones with no kids, will work on average a lot more. Is that the case or am I wrong?

mariusz79··on Ask HN: How to manage developers who aren't very good?
Well, maybe it's not that they aren't very good but that you suck as a team leader? :)
mariusz79··on Harvard stores 700 terabytes of data into a single gram of DNA (2012)
The era of sexually transmitted data is upon us. :]
mariusz79··on Ask HN: How do I secure a personal journal?
What fountain pen would you recommend for a beginner trying to relearn how to use anything different then the keyboard? :)
mariusz79··on Ask HN: How do I secure a personal journal?
First you have to ask yourself - do I want someone to be able to read that journal after I'm gone. If yes, go with a pen and paper. Since we can safely assume that you spend more time in front of the computer than writing stuff with a pen, it will be a really nice experience, almost mystical.
mariusz79··on Screw motivation, what you need is discipline
Start small and don't expect results any time soon. How small? I.e touch the phone when you wake up until you count to 20.. do it for a week. Add another small task (i.e clear kitchen table before going to sleep) and work on both of them. Try to do each task for 4 weeks minimum. After six months you will be doing so much of the small stuff that I will begin to impact your life in a really positive way, and you're self-discipline will grow.. Big time.
mariusz79··on Don't use the mailing lists
While this may not be the case in this situation, recently I've noticed that people are becoming extreme wimps..

People, especially younger generation can't stand being treated harshly. You can't criticize them, and every response must be nice, politically correct and helpful.

Sometimes you just have to let it go, or simply fight back. And when you do fight back, be prepared because it's unlikely that you will win every time.. Such is life. Grow a pair.

When I was younger it was normal for kids to fight in school. Nobody really cared if you got your ass kicked once in a while. And often times you kicked some ass. This helped people realize that not everyone in their life will be nice and helpful, and that sometimes you need to have a thick skin and ignore what people are saying. Now it seems kids, when they get laugh at or in some one offended, if they can't get help from the adult they just grab a gun or a knife and start killing people because they simply never had a chance to learn how to deal with competition.

mariusz79··on Genetic Algorithm Walkers
Looks like you've hit an evolutionary dead-end.. exterminate!
mariusz79··on The Security Flag in the IPv4 Header (2003)

0x1 If the bit is set to 1, the packet has evil intent. Secure
systems SHOULD try to defend themselves against such packets.
Insecure systems MAY chose to crash, be penetrated, etc.

mariusz79··on To elaborate on why open-source hardware is hard
We tend to forget that software was hard just a few decades ago. We'll make hardware easier, but it will take time.
mariusz79··on Databases at 14.4Mhz
MHz not Mhz.
mariusz79··on Why are objects so hard to debug?
Well, technically you're still debugging the class, not the object, you're just using the instantiated object to do it. :)
mariusz79··on Why are objects so hard to debug?
Wouldn't it be easier to debug your classes not objects ?;)
mariusz79··on The Best Books I Read in 2014
@sp322 it's racist to care about the race of the author imho. I've never, ever had the urge to check race, gender or sexual orientation of any author, director, screenwriter, photographer etc. Why would anyone waste their time doing something like that? It's just stupid.
mariusz79··on The Best Books I Read in 2014
Ha, so what, is it racist and bigoted to read books simply because they were written by a white man? Who even cares about what race and gender is the author of a book? What about their religion? Hair and eye color?

Should we start vetting movie directors and screenwriters before renting a movie? Or maybe would you like for the governments to setup quotas, and federally funded programs to support minority authors?

mariusz79··on Hawking: AI could end human race
I'm tired of this fear mongering. There are hundreds of viruses that could end the human race. There are millions of rocks in space that could end the human race. There are people that could end the human race with push of a button. Human race could be history by the time I stop writing this rant.

AI has a great potential and could help us prevent most of our existential threats. AI is not a god. It will not suddenly become self-aware, self-improving, and evil.

Enough with that fear porn, please.

mariusz79··on Pantelligent: Intelligent Pan – Cook Everything Perfectly (YC W13)
If you want to cook your food right check the temperature of the food not temperature of the pan. And cast iron is much better than teflon.
mariusz79··on It’s time to extend the US Privacy Act to EU citizens
I knew that you must be one of the "freelancers"...
mariusz79··on It’s time to extend the US Privacy Act to EU citizens
Poor corporations.. Maybe we should start non-profit to help them survive. You know, each us could donate few bucks to keep these poor corporations afloat. After all what can they do with a few tens of billions in cash?
mariusz79··on It’s time to extend the US Privacy Act to EU citizens
Sorry, but Google is probably the biggest threat to our privacy.

mariusz79··on Study shows brain interface between humans
With 20Mbits you would get only 1bit resolution, and since we're talking about analog data that's not enough. If we went to 12bit ADC we would need 320Mbits/sec.
mariusz79··on I’m Terrified of My New TV
It's important to remember that these privacy violations are not only building a profile of each and everyone of us.

/rant mode on It's likely that it's all about controlling us, and using our profiles to adjust not only our spending habits but also our lives. Just imagine how companies like Google, who have almost unlimited access to our data could show you progressively more left or right-leaning websites in response to your queries. Your Netflix, Amazon, Youtube suggestions are keeping you in a bubble of thinks and ideas you already know and like. And if you always go with these suggestions it will be extremely easy to adjust them slightly every time to push you in a direction that corporations and governments prefer.

We know that the filter bubble already exists, but do they adjust that bubble to their needs? If you're quick to say that this is unlikely, just think about advertisement. Isn't making us want to buy or do something main goal of advertisement?

Of course I don't think that there is some kind of conspiracy to convert everyone to be a tree-hugging left-wing fanatic, but if we have corporations with as much power over our lives as Google, Facebook or Apple it will be easy for them to slightly push us in a direction that benefits their bottom lines. Any company that has power to control our reading and viewing habits has in fact control over us. Now when they know more about our health and location, when they can automatically listen to and analyze everything we say what else is left?

Yes, privacy outside of our homes is gone forever. We will never be able to get it back under control. But what we do, read, watch and listen to, what we talk about in our homes should stay private.

So next time you think that the conveniences of having a website or a movie suggested to you, think if that suggestion is not making you an obedient, gadget buying drone.

mariusz79··on WhatsApp Lost $138M Last Year
It's hard to believe that app that is free for a year and than 99 cents per year could be losing money. /sarc
mariusz79··on Twitpic blocking archive team from backing up pictures
Come on, wasn't twitpic free? What why should they keep paying for hosting if the business went under?
mariusz79··on Nixie – Wearable camera that can fly [video]

mariusz79··on Outsourced Jobs Are No Longer Cheap, So They're Being Automated
One big issue that people tend to miss when comparing current situation to the previous years is the fact that machines are making more machines. See, when combine harvester or loom was invented people were needed to build these machines, so it was fairly easy to move them from doing one manual job to another. Right now however, that one machine can be build by another machine.

When I recently helped build a machine to automate some test processes at a local company it took us about 120 hours in total to do it. The machine will replace three people. All of the components that were used were either computers, software or electronics. This is not something that any of these employees will be ever able to do, as they are simply a very low skilled, uneducated workers, from impoverished neighborhood. The next machine that we may be building for this company will take us even less time, as we have everything already designed, and tested. We just need to put few components together and verify that it works. It will maybe take us 16 hours to do it.

When it takes you less than a week of work to replace three people, there is no way that the jobs for these employees can be created fast enough.
