But, in order to even convince me there's a viable alternative, the user interface of something like Collections has to really knock it out of the park for me. So much so, it seems daunting.

I think it could be reworded and be more useful (see my comment further down).
I think it can be reworded to be useful guiding principle in more environments if you're willing to parse it more carefully. Perhaps something like "The customer's perception is more important than yours."?
If you're worried about too many fields on that screen, then maybe you can get rid of a username that's separate from my email address...
But, being really honest, I'd say the biggest issue confronting you right now is design: it does not look professional or trustworthy. When your brand is based on a notion of trust (that's essentially what you're offering to mediate), you need to be very sensitive to the elements of design that help establish that.
