marcusjt··on UN Rapporteur on torture: “Julian Assange is a political prisoner.”
This is from September 9th
marcusjt··on Australia to produce seaweed cattle feed that reduces methane emissions by 80%
“All our environmental problems become easier to solve with fewer people and harder — and ultimately impossible — to solve with ever more people.” "I support Population Matters because I think if we keep on growing, we’re not only going to damage nature, but we’re likely to see more and more inequality and human suffering." “One thing you can say is that in places where women are in charge of their bodies, where they have the vote, where they are allowed to dictate what they do and what they want, whether it’s proper medical facilities for birth control, the birth rate falls.” “The human population can no longer be allowed to grow in the same old uncontrolled way. If we do not take charge of our population size, then nature will do it for us.” “As I see it, humanity needs to reduce its impact on the Earth urgently and there are three ways to achieve this: we can stop consuming so many resources, we can change our technology and we can reduce the growth of our population.” "Instead of controlling the environment for the benefit of the population, perhaps it's time we controlled the population to allow the survival of the environment."

- Sir David Attenborough, naturalist and broadcaster, Population Matters Patron (born 1926)

marcusjt··on Red Dead Redemption 2 DRM still has not been cracked (316 days)
It's highly fault intolerant on everything staying the way it is, which means if in the future the internet is temporarily/permanently down for weeks/months for huge swathes of people (e.g. EMP / nuclear war), or the RDR DRM server goes offline temporarily/permanently (will it still be up in 10 year's time?) the game cannot be played. Future fallible not future proof.
marcusjt··on Former NSA chief Keith Alexander has joined Amazon’s board of directors
Plus the EU, surely?
marcusjt··on I accidentally built a nudity/porn platform
How interesting, my experience is completely different - I'm a UX Designer working in a squad and I/we find JIRA super easy to use, allows you to customise ticket types pretty much to our heart's content (including removing stuff you don't need), ditto customising the board and other features, allows us to track changes, comment on tickets, and works reliably. Almost nothing else allows us to do the same. Admittedly Jira has been overhauled recently and is much better than it was, plus some new features have been added. Oh, and there's an app which allows me to do most of what I need to do on my phone super quickly, partially thanks to the notifications.
marcusjt··on Websites that look like desktop GUIs
I always preferred Geiss, but either way, I wish such visualisation capabilities were built in to Spotify... Or is there a suitable in_xxx plugin for Winamp that will let me use its visualisations with Spotify?
marcusjt··on London tube map made from a working circuit board
As far as my brief research shows, Harry Beck came up with his original tube map design in 1931 (which is actually quite different to what we know it as today btw), while the first printed circuit board was invented in 1936 by Paul Eisler. Thus while it's possible that Harry Beck was inspired by circuit diagrams, it's surely not possible that he was inspired by (printed) circuit boards.
marcusjt··on Google Blew a Ten-Year Lead
Strange, works fine for me, you can pick as many calendars as you want in Assistant Settings > Services > Calendar
marcusjt··on What Comes After Zoom?
They can't be, deciding which messaging app to use to contact a given person and have a reasonable expectation of getting a reply reasonably quickly, is very much an unsolved problem that everyone suffers from, whether techie or not. And it varies by country & subculture, e.g. over here in the UK almost everyone I know uses WhatsApp as their primary IM, whereas my understanding is that it's much less popular in the USA. And let's not talk about iMessage, the most closed of all IM platforms.

I'm surprised nobody has yet mentioned that Meet is rolling out a pretty impressive AI-powered nose reduction feature to solve the background noise problem - see https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/9/21285011/google-meet-backg... (watch the video)
marcusjt··on Fast 2D Rendering on GPU
Surely >95% of screens out there right now are running at 60Hz, so 240Hz "pen drawing" is pretty niche and not a priority?
marcusjt··on Achieving Accessibility Through Simplicity
No JS is needed to prefetch resources that might be needed by the user in the future (e.g. the next navigation) because prefetch it's an HTML5 standard so let the browser handle it, see https://www.keycdn.com/blog/resource-hints
marcusjt··on I think my BBQ just offered to be my default browser?
There's enough accessibility guidance and testing tools in the world, especially now that Deque have added premium features to AXE. The problem is product teams/squads not actually using the guidance and tools available to create fully accessible user experiences, the root causes of which are many.

"or we see a puppy and have an urge to squeeze it" - stroke or cuddle perhaps, but SQUEEZE?!
marcusjt··on Google Meet premium video meetings–free for everyone
This handy Chrome extension makes Meet work via a push-to-talk using the spacebar, with many config options https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-meet-push-t...

But why doesn't Meet have these features already...?! ️

marcusjt··on Perfect UX Is Impossible (2019)
In principle there's no reason why you couldn't cater to each user group quite differently and make one experience morph into another as users gain confidence and/or show interest in more advanced features, but in reality there's rarely the scope to even refine the basics iteratively, so everything ends up heavily compromised. (Speaking as a UX designer, 10+ years experience)
marcusjt··on UK accused of paying too much attention to epidemiologists over other experts

marcusjt··on Tell HN: Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and now web cams
Google Meet lets you do that too, in fact I was doing it earlier today, but until now I hadn't thought that was in any way remarkable... is it really?
marcusjt··on Smart Algorithms beat Hardware Acceleration for Large-Scale Deep Learning
YES! This annoys me so much whenever I see it
marcusjt··on BlurHash: Algorithm to generate compact representation of an image placeholder
I'm surprised this isn't more web focused, i.e. a NodeJS library which encodes an image as a BASE64 data URL which any browser can render immediately while the real image lazy loads
marcusjt··on Critical Bluetooth vulnerability in Android
I used to have an S2, S3, S4 and S6 before my S9 and (as far as I can recall) it's always been possible to turn Bluetooth on while in airplane mode.

UPDATE: confirmed by later comments in https://androidforums.com/threads/turning-on-bluetooth-in-fl...

marcusjt··on New suction-cup system spins water to stick to rough surfaces
Presumably you were downvoted because your question suggests that you haven't actually read the article, which does mention how it compares to other powered suction (i.e. "vacuum pump") devices.
marcusjt··on What Is Color Management?
I'm a dark room lit only by other people's monitors, with each potentially having different scenes onscreen from moment to moment and thus ambient light varying all the time, that's a difficult/impossible thing to calibrate for manually and if automatically recalibrated by a monitor with ambient light sensors could potentially cause a vicious circle of autorecalibrations around the room
marcusjt··on Integrate PWAs into Native Sharing UIs with Workbox
It's already the case that the a user engagement heuristic (along with other criteria) must be met before the prompt appears, but the engagement heuristics vary between browsers, see https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/app-install-b...
marcusjt··on Integrate PWAs into Native Sharing UIs with Workbox
Assuming you're talking about web push notifications in general and Chrome for Android it's super easy and exactly the same as Chrome for Windows & OSX:

- When on the site in question just tap the padlock/favicon in the URL bar, tap "site settings" and then you can see the permissions granted and change them as you want to.

- Alternatively, you can get to the same "site settings" screen directly from any web push notification in your Android notification panel simply by expanding the notification in the usual way and selecting "settings", which takes you to the "site settings" screen as before.

So if revoking from any page on the site and from any notification pushed by the site isn't straightforward enough then what do you propose instead?

Here's a video of it in action, for those unfamiliar, the poster had also included a link to its location at Pouet https://youtu.be/_zSjpIyMt0k
