marcusgarvey··on Why Sons Hold Marriages Together
>"I don’t know how to make a little girl happy the way I fundamentally know how to make a boy happy, so I worry I’m going to somehow screw that up.”

I hate that so many fathers who think raising a daughter is some kind of minefield, while raising a son is somehow so straightforward. It may come from a well-intentioned place but it seems so misguided and it feeds into a lot of the dysfunction between the genders.

Mentioned is the GAO's finding -- all the way back in 1979 -- that the secrecy had no legal basis. Reports from the GAO, the Government Accountability Office, are a great way to keep an eye on all sorts of wonky, provocative investigations that are often left in the shadows.

>Are the people who blame "black culture" right?

No. Those people are at best misguided, at worst, racist. If white American culture is the standard against which black American culture is judged, I am still waiting for the evidence that white culture prizes scholastic achievement and general intelligence. The only reason geeks and nerds became cool in America is because, suddenly dotcom riches! Until then there was a long history of media & movies that praised jocks and misanthropes above all else. (Hello, Molly Ringwald, hello Grease.) Today's college sports industrial complex is another sign. So is Fox News. So are the yahoos being elected to Texas schoolbook committees. So are creationists. >Hilda is considered one of the patron saints of learning and culture, including poetry.

Interesting detail. I always enjoy learning about who's the patron saint of this or that. Why did the tradition start, and how does each saint get assigned a domain? How offbeat it can get? And are "they" planning to update it occasionally to match how the world has changed?

marcusgarvey··on Climate Model Predicts West Antarctic Ice Sheet Could Melt Rapidly
I appreciate your observations. I may be defeatist it seems too late to stop climate change. The last time political gridlock at the federal level was this bad, the U.S. had a Civil War, so I find it hard to envision a federal solution that happens soon enough. So instead, I'd like to know, "What comes next?"

marcusgarvey··on Evidence that fish have feelings
But according to the article stress hyperthemia is one trait used to identify consciousness. Is consciousness the same as "having feelings"?

>One particular trait used to identify consciousness, which was previously thought to be absent in fish, is the capacity for stress-induced hyperthermia or “emotional fever”. This is a physical reaction similar to a fever caused by infection, but in this case the trigger is a stressful situation. Basically, the body gets warmer in response to stress.

How right you are. Arrangementfinder.com is the company in this space owned by Avid Life. It simply didn't occur to me that there would be yet another company with such a similar name in this space.
marcusgarvey··on Where the Sugar Babies Are
Seeking Arrangement is brought to you by the fine folks behind Ashley Madison. So I would take any of their data with a boulder-sized grain of salt. I'm surprised that The Atlantic would base an entire article on their data without doing better homework.
marcusgarvey··on Request For Research: Basic Income
What can startups do to help increase prosperity for everyone? Help get money out of politics. This is fundamental. In the current state, all policies are tilted towards the most prosperous among us. We all know this. We need our public servants to be incentivized to work towards the public good. This is the foundation without which all else is futile.
marcusgarvey··on The Future of Facebook Advertising Isn’t in the United States
Didn't realize the extent to which FB is (or soon will be reliant) on emerging markets. It has a huge established base in the U.S. -- no slouch there. But the growth rates are quite different.

>The point is that APAC and other “emerging markets” like India, Brazil and parts of Africa are growing a lot quicker for Facebook than the U.S. or Europe. In the first three quarters of 2015, Facebook added 73 million users in APAC; it added just 23 million across the U.S., Canada and all of Europe combined. Fast forward five, 10 or 15 years down the road and it’s possible (probable?) that those emerging markets — the areas of the world where millions of people are coming to the Internet for the very first time on mobile phones — will be Facebook’s most important markets.

This reminds me of what I've heard about MasterCard. Their CEO wanted to empower any employee to come up with good ideas. So, if an employees sends an idea to their manager and the manager doesn't respond, the employee has the right to do it. But it sounds like the recipe for a shitshow, so I'd love to know if this is really the case.

>Ironically, some of the greatest economic progress for Black Americans occurred during the oppressive Jim Crow era because Black consumers had to buy goods and services from Black-friendly and Black-owned & operated businesses.

On a very individualized basis, there were some inspiring gains for sure. But policies like those mentioned in my other comments were so widespread that, on a collective basis, the progress was and is quite abysmal.
