marcus_chang··on Show HN: We Got Sick of Giving Out 'Ballpark Estimates' So We Built This
Pretty incredible to have the audacity to showcase a plagiarized site in a bid to win customers. As a consultant, the last thing I would ever want associated with my reputation is taking shortcuts.

Sounds similar to Firebase. Can you provide some financial/user metrics for potential buyers?

marcus_chang··on The Famine Ended 70 Years Ago, but Dutch Genes Still Bear Scars
> Am I crazy? It's "Bare" not "Bear" right? I can't be the only one? It's the NYT fer chrissakes

marcus_chang··on A Map Showing How Much Time It Takes English-Speakers to Learn Foreign Languages
The only languages that he's become even somewhat competent at are the ones closely related to languages that he already knew.

Here's a video of him "holding a conversation" in Mandarin: https: https://youtu.be/hoWXYmLpNJY?t=643

It's a series of non-stop "uh-huh's" and, frankly, it's embarrassing. He's a marketing gimmick and pretty reviled by the polyglot community for trivializing how much effort learning a language actually takes.

marcus_chang··on A Map Showing How Much Time It Takes English-Speakers to Learn Foreign Languages
> Not that I had any success with it, but here is a book/site about how to learn which I found interesting:

He hasn't had any success with it either. Benny is incredibly bad at speaking the languages he's claimed to have "learned" in 3 months.

marcus_chang··on Ask HN: Which open mathematical problems block immediate technical progress?
> I don't think it works that way.

Sure it does. With new mathematical discoveries, there come direct and immediate consequences to the technologies built using previous assumptions - which will now either be validated or invalidated.

If, for example, prime factorization is proven to be not computationally difficult, invalidating the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strong_RSA_assumption, and somebody publishes a practical method, then most of the world's cryptography systems utilizing RSA would be hacked immediately.

marcus_chang··on Ask HN: Bitcoin about to cross $10k. Still a skeptic?
Not in the same way that gold is. Currencies can experience hyperinflation from increased supply (printing money), but until someone finds the philosopher's stone, gold has relatively stable supply (and subsequently - price).
marcus_chang··on Ask HN: Bitcoin about to cross $10k. Still a skeptic?
> I mean you cannot (at least to my knowledge) buy burgers with gold/ETFs/Stocks, doesn't the same apply to Bitcoin?

Gold is a store of value and ETFs/Stocks are investment vehicles. Bitcoin is designed to be used as a currency.

marcus_chang··on Linked List Problems (2002) [pdf]
Unless you're interviewing Dijkstra, it's a ridiculous question to ask. Anyone who's heard it before knows the answer instantly (I knew the answer before I even finished reading the description) and anyone unfamiliar with it will likely flail.

Hey Abdin,

I sent you a reply that may have gone to spam. Sorry about that.
