mapme··on Early-Retirement Update
Very interesting. I know that most of the things I do are ego driven, but it’s so ingrained in society It’s tough to let go of.

For meditation I worry your teacher or the type may have been a bad fit. Meditation teachers I follow encourage looking for joy and savoring the sweet feelings of being in the moment. It feels comparable to enjoying a beautiful sunset.

Did you tame the ego via meditation? If not what other method? Curious about the path that lead to depersonalization. It’s discussed in meditation circles as a fear some have, but really, many monks and “enlightened” are interesting characters eg. Shinzen Young
mapme··on Germany pauses AstraZeneca vaccinations as a 'precaution'
fwiw about current state of play: in the US and most EU countries no vaccine is even approved for those under 18.

The challenge with COVID as always is that the risk of death is correlated across the population. So a 25 yo having COVID increases the odds that he dies and that everyone around him dies. But that’s a whole other discussion.

A simulation from the economist gives ~2% chance of being hospitalized if you get COVID as a 29 yr old male with no comorbidities.

There is no evidence of the link between sleeping sickness, EL, and Spanish flu.

> Since encephalitis lethargica’s (EL) prevalence in the 1920s, epidemiological and clinical debate has persisted over whether EL was caused by, potentiated by, or merely coincident with the Spanish influenza pandemic. Epidemiologic analyses generally suggest that the disorders were coincidental.

No, looks like it is easy to modify existing mRNA vaccines slightly and give booster shots

>“Every time a new variant comes up we should be able to test whether or not [our vaccine] is effective,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla told Bloomberg news. “Once we discover something that is not as effective, we will very, very quickly be able to produce a booster dose that will be a small variation to the current vaccine.”

Polling shows ~50% of Rs say that it was rigged. So not all, but that’s a big number.

Leaders convinced people to do terrible things before newsfeed algorithms, seems like it’s only a contributing factor, but not the fundamental issue.

Feels like it’s a ‘mind of humans’ issue.

mapme··on Computer Science textbooks that are freely available online
The fundamentals don’t change fast and are what everything else is built on, so I would start there.

For example, if you don’t have a traditional CS degree, https://teachyourselfcs.com/ is a curated and effective set of books.

If your trying to understand complex systems, I would read Designing Data Intensive Applications, which is perhaps the best and most useful technical book I have ever read, and covers the most important parts of distributed systems. A lot of what’s in the book are fundamental distributed systems, from the 70-80s?/newer things from early 2000s built by BigTechCo

mapme··on What does privacy mean under surveillance capitalism?
Theoretically this is exactly the justification political mobs on twitter use to go after bad behavior that to them feels morally wrong.

I think it’s one of the only ways to change society but it should be done with a light touch. With smoking I think people thought “it’s gross” not that you are a gross and morally repugnant person. So demonizing the act and not the person is important.

Granted if people are not using social media the mobs will be smaller, but even if everyone is in communities the size of HN, it’s still possible to form “mob sentiment”

The PA, WI, MI GOP state legislatures refused to process mail in ballots before hand which is why it took so long. Look at Florida who voted R and counted their mail in ballots before Election Day and were able to report results that night. It was manufactured by GOP state legislatures to sow doubt.
