mantaraygun··on Kentucky candle factory: questions arise over why staff worked during tornadoes
> 20 minutes warning

That's why. Dumb article, do people think tornadoes are the same thing as hurricanes or something?

mantaraygun··on “We removed the RSS feed since this technology became obsolete”
> - every day I deal with broken links and broken images because my feed reader doesn't know from which URL it should resolve relative links

I have a restrictive whitelist configuration for uMatrix and in most cases I don't bother to whitelist images when I read articles. I've found that the vast majority of the time, the images are stock images that only tangentially relate to the subject of the text and add no real value. I guess they're included because editors feel images are essential even if they're unrelated.

mantaraygun··on Hertz customers arrested, jailed and held at gunpoint after false theft reports
They're being replaced by people taking fewer trips, and fewer people taking trips at all. By people taking road trips instead of plane/etc trips and having their own car at their destination, or by choosing to visit friends/family and being able to use that person's car. And then of course there is uber, to mop up the remainder.
mantaraygun··on Hertz customers arrested, jailed and held at gunpoint after false theft reports
> Someone at Hertz is culpable for not taking steps to prevent this from happening.

It's far from clear that anybody at Hertz is criminally culpable, which is what was suggested upthread, with talk of people making false statements being arrested.

> 1.8.9 and 1.12.2

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the first favored by pay-to-win servers and pvp specializing servers, while 1.12.2 is favored for modding? Both seem pretty niche to me, albeit noisy niches. There have been several substantial updates to the game since 1.12 and I'm quite sure most players are presently on 1.18 or at least 1.17. And I don't have much sympathy for the plight of those P2W servers.

You missed it, or maybe your translation left it out? Search for 'Apothetae':

> Nor was it in the power of the father to dispose of the child as he thought fit; he was obliged to carry it before certain triers at a place called Lesche; these were some of the elders of the tribe to which the child belonged; their business it was carefully to view the infant, and, if they found it stout and well made, they gave order for its rearing, and allotted to it one of the nine thousand shares of land above mentioned for its maintenance, but, if they found it puny and ill-shaped, ordered it to be taken to what was called the Apothetae, a sort of chasm under Taygetus; as thinking it neither for the good of the child itself, nor for the public interest, that it should be brought up, if it did not, from the very outset, appear made to be healthy and vigorous.

That's on them. They can migrate to wyldfire-fixed-log4j if they want, or to whatever other fork they want, or they can keep using the old busted shit. It's up to them, there's no problem here.

mantaraygun··on The debate about nuclear power and climate change
The US Navy has lost/dropped some nuclear bombs too. But what he means is they've never had a serious reactor accident. They've lost two nuclear submarines, but neither was due to a problem with the reactor. Fumbling a nuclear bomb is obviously very concerning, but I don't think it reflects poorly on their ability to run reactors safely. They have several thousand reactor-years of safe operating experience, that doesn't happen by accident.

> Uranium isn’t dangerous by itself

Well.. it's not a huge deal but don't eat it. I have a bit of uranium ore on my bookshelf, but I avoid handling it and wash my hands after I do. Besides the alpha radiation, which isn't good for your insides, it's also toxic.

mantaraygun··on Amazon Facility Hit by Tornado
Both at once would be quite a shitshow. Soil liquefaction floats your tornado shelter right out of the ground, then the tornado smashes it. I can't imagine what it would take to survive both at once. Thankfully both at once would be extremely unlikely.
mantaraygun··on PSA: uBlock/AdBlocks on Chrome to lose function thanks to Manifestv3
Does Brave have their own extension 'store' yet? Last I heard they're still piggybacking off Chrome's. I see no point in Brave supporting the old API if none of the extensions do.
mantaraygun··on E-Shotgun
> people getting head injuries when getting zapped is pretty common

This scares the shit out of me, more than getting shot by a cop. Cops use tasers a lot more freely than guns, very frequently using them when there is no plausible threat to themselves or anybody else. They're allowed to get away with it because tasers are "less lethal." All it takes is one bad fall to turn you into a brain scrambled imbecile who can't tie your own shoelaces anymore but much of the public doesn't seem to understand this and are unsympathetic to these sort of concerns. At least with guns, people understand the gravity of the matter.

mantaraygun··on E-Shotgun
I'm not sure about those particular air rifles, but there are .177 and .22 caliber air rifles capable of 50J or more. A half gram .117 pellet at 1600fps is 60J. They should definitely be treated as weapons.
mantaraygun··on E-Shotgun
> From what I can see the only arms that are prohibited are ones that don't have a legal use (ie sawnoff shotguns)

Not really, the sawnoff shotguns thing is an anachronism. The National Firearms Act (NFA) which restricted sawnoff shotguns (not completely banned) was originally intended to restrict all handguns, presumably because they're concealable and useful for crime. To make a handgun ban meaningful, it was going to also restrict short barrel shotguns and rifles. The handgun restrictions got dropped from the NFA for political reasons, but the short barrel shotgun and rifle restrictions remained.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Firearms_Act#Backgrou...

You can still acquire/manufacture a short barrel shotgun or rifle, but you have do paperwork for it and from what I've seen nobody really values short barrel shotguns enough for this to be common. However if you did do all the paperwork and made or bought one, then subsequently used it for self defense, that would be legal.

Also they're legal in Canada: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sawed-off_shotgun#Canada

mantaraygun··on E-Shotgun
Why is it called a shotgun? It shoots little discs, not shot.
mantaraygun··on Mercedes-Benz wins approval for Level 3 autonomous driving on the Autobahn
I don't know what it's like in Italy, but in America bicycles are allowed on almost all roads, except for limited access highways. They're even allowed on most regular highways, to the chagrin of many car drivers. The poor acceleration of bicycles is the worst on roads where frequent stops are expected (for intersections) but bicycles are allowed on almost all of those roads, particularly city streets which obviously have abundant intersections. Limited access highways don't have intersections that would frustrate cyclists, but as a consequence of not having intersections those roads have much higher speeds that cyclists can't keep up with. Furthermore, heavy trucks have terrible acceleration, much worse than cyclists, but are allowed on all of the limited access highways that bicycles are banned on.

Maybe it's different in Italy, but in America the restrictions on bicycles really seem to be about top speed, not acceleration.

mantaraygun··on Mercedes-Benz wins approval for Level 3 autonomous driving on the Autobahn
> there are countless reasons why you cannot drive a bicycle [...] on a highway besides the speed you travel at.

What reasons other than speed are there for keeping bicycles off fast roads? Motorcycle can be very nearly just as small and vulnerable as bicycles, but they can keep pace with cars and consequently they're allowed on every road.

mantaraygun··on Mercedes-Benz wins approval for Level 3 autonomous driving on the Autobahn
If the road conditions were good, then breathalyzing somebody who's going substantially below the speed limit for no apparent reason seems prudent. If road conditions were poor, then obviously that's another story.

Since this minting craft would only practiced by a very small number of people (relative to other crafts), I think the chance of many relevant artifacts/documents surviving until today would be relatively slim.
