manningthegoose··on Google Pixel Fold
I just don't understand who wants these foldable phones, especially at the $1799 price point. I guess a use case is wealthy frequent travelers who don't want a separate device with a larger screen to watch movies/videos on the go? Someone help me out here.
manningthegoose··on OpenAI blames Open-source library for Chat History Bug
You're correct, it is just a fact, but he's presenting in a misleading way. The statement presents the issue as if a third party "open source" group is responsible, not OpenAI. In reality, anyone who uses open source code is 100% liable for all its faults -- their bugs are now your bugs. It's not a bug in an open source library, it's a bug in ChatGPT.
manningthegoose··on Google Creates Blockchain Unit, Hires New ‘Founding Leader’
It's possible that this project was created as a sort of L8+ engineer/manager retention program. There's been some reporting that high level execs have been leaving GAMMA companies for blockchain/crypto projects with high payout potential[1]. I wonder if Google is heading in this direction to toss these people a bone with the hopes they'll stay.

manningthegoose··on Twitter Blue is now available in the US and NZ
> Publishers angling for retweets to get nickels from twitter's algorithm is anathema to professional journalism.

Isn't that what they're already doing? Except the payer is the advertiser instead of the platform itself via the subscriber.

manningthegoose··on Twitter Blue is now available in the US and NZ
You're right, it probably won't, at least not while it's still printing money for all the corporate entities involved. But it's my understanding that most of the data-harvesting tools in use today were originally created to enhance ad-targeting and drive up CPM. At the very least we can hope products like Blue might put a dent in this incentive structure.

As someone who was an initial skeptic when this was first announced, I really appreciate what twitter is trying to do with Blue, especially around direct payments to publishers. Any step to get the internet off of the ad-based data-harvesting revenue model is ultimately better for almost all parties.
manningthegoose··on Evolving Reddit’s Workforce
Definitely agree. Although maybe the increased dilution of tech workers (roughly same # spread across larger set of cities) will help mitigate this.
manningthegoose··on Evolving Reddit’s Workforce
This is great, glad to see reddit leading on this front. I do wonder what effect this would have on metro areas with high COL if more companies adopted this policy. Mass exodus? Probably not. But I imagine the effect will at least be measurable.
manningthegoose··on Hot Chips Symposium – Keynotes (2019) [video]
There’s a small part of me that was hoping this was from a conference about spicy potato chips
manningthegoose··on Beating C with 70 lines of Go
I actually disagree. If you look at the code written in the article, it's hardly unreadable or very code golf-y as you suggest. I think the author is really just trying to say that programmers shouldn't dismiss Go as a possible systems language in favor of C just because C has a reputation of being faster in all cases.
manningthegoose··on I Got a Knuth Check for 0x$3.00
Not really, since a “hexadecimal dollar” is really just a fictional measurement of money that Knuth has created (which he designates with symbol 0x$). I guess if it were $0x3.00, you could interpret the quantity to be regular dollars in hex form, which would just evaluate to 3, instead of the 7.68 Knuth is actually offering
manningthegoose··on Dropbox Chief to Join Elite Ranks of Idea-to-I.P.O. Founders
I think he’s saying that you should teach yourself technical skills instead of looking for a technical co founder
manningthegoose··on Thursday night Mountain View power outage the result of a drone crash
Probably next season. This season's already been shot.
