manicennui··on Software disenchantment
American cars in the 90s were terrible. The domestic automakers wouldn't be in business today if people actually bought based on reliability. Now you can buy almost any brand and reasonably expect it to last over 100k miles.
manicennui··on Software disenchantment
Adding new features is what most companies want. There isn't any correlation between software quality and success so companies don't bother.
manicennui··on Software disenchantment
I don't think software is anywhere near as buggy as it was in the past. Some of us had to support Windows machines in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Code quality does not seem to have any correlation with business success. Why should business care?

manicennui··on Leaving Twitter had no effect on NPR's traffic
It wasn't just that. Twitter labeled them as "state-affiliated media" and threatened to do all kinds of other nonsense like give their account away.
manicennui··on Advent of Code 2023's new AI/LLM Policy
At best CodeGPT helped semi-incompetent developers who relied on SO to do their jobs work a little faster. No one competent is in any danger.

People at that level have complicated employment contracts. Getting rid of them without huge downsides isn't always straightforward.
manicennui··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
ARR doesn't seem to be super important for VC funded companies as long as someone will pay a lot of money for the company and everyone can cash out.
manicennui··on CSS is, in fact, awesome (2021)
CSS makes the common things that nearly everyone wants to do unnecessarily hard.
manicennui··on Analysis of the California Delete Act
It's irritating that companies do the bare minimum required by law instead of doing the right thing.

That didn't take long. When the acquisition was announced someone from Songtradr was on here trying to reassure people. Wonder how they'll spin this.

A lot of people are on 2-year payment plans through their provider and just switch every time.
manicennui··on Tech doesn’t make our lives easier. It makes them faster
The fact that some technology does in fact make life easier does not mean that it all does.
manicennui··on Strong static typing, a hill I'm willing to die on
This seems to be a common practice in Go and I've seen it cause requests to be rejected because one unimportant field is wrong. Were we to do this for truly important requests, like lead traffic from third parties, we would lose a lot of business.
manicennui··on Strong static typing, a hill I'm willing to die on
The problems with JS go far beyond its dynamic typing.
manicennui··on Strong static typing, a hill I'm willing to die on
Arguably, nullability and mutability are issues that cause far, far more issues than dynamic typing.
manicennui··on Strong static typing, a hill I'm willing to die on
This is the sort of position that is baffling to me. Software engineers claim to be very logical, but this boils down to a preference being stated as some kind of objective truth. Show the evidence (not anecdotes) that static typing gives benefits that are worth the cost. My anecdotal evidence is that I rarely come across problems in production code that would be solved by static typing and people make the same sorts of logic mistakes in languages like Java and Typescript.
manicennui··on Project Management Software Can't Save You
Is the problem really tools or is it that there are few people who can think in this way?
manicennui··on Project Management Software Can't Save You
I've never seen Gantt charts used for anything other than setting unrealistic expectations.
manicennui··on Ask HN: Has meetup.org been replaced by anything?
There are also a lot of virtual groups now. The Chicago Clojure group was never super active even before the pandemic, but there is a London Clojure group that puts all of their videos online.
manicennui··on Ask HN: Has meetup.org been replaced by anything?
I think the pandemic killed a lot of groups. The surviving groups are still pretty active on MeetUp.
manicennui··on Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman
YC is basically a non-entity when it comes to such startups.
manicennui··on The Curse of Dialup World
I've never had an ISP that I've liked since the dialup days. I remember liking a couple of the ISPs that I had at that time a lot, but EnterAct in Chicago is the one I remember most distinctly. They were very transparent about what was going on, provided great service, and did things like offer different numbers for different 56k protocols so you could get the best speeds and stability depending on which modem you owned.

Unfortunately EnterAct was eventually sold to some larger company and DSL became more popular.

manicennui··on The Curse of Dialup World
mSQL was my first introduction to open source databases as well.
manicennui··on Cat found after Lyft fiasco dragged on for days, Lyft to pay vet bills
The process for determining whether a driver is willing to transport a pet is asinine. Just add something to the app so the passenger can indicate that they have a pet, whether it is in a carrier, its approximate size, etc. and let the driver decide whether to take the job.

These services are already borderline questionable given all of the problems and the increased prices now that they aren't trying to put taxis out of business. The moment one must deal with someone at the company to beg for a refund or deal with any of the other problems the equation becomes pretty one-sided.
