manderley··on Microsoft's underwater data centre resurfaces after two years
If that was the reason, we'd know about it from the PR release. This must have been a failure.
manderley··on Apple doesn't let you disclose their 30% IAP fee to your customers
You mean without the influence of millions of informed users.
manderley··on Streaming Is Laying Bare How Big ISPs and Big Tech Work Together Against Users
Not that odd: It increases the perceived value of a plan without costing the provider much in traffic.
manderley··on Amazon Liable for Defective Third-Party Products Rules CA Appellate Court
What that person is saying is that you can apparently get co-mingled inventory by a third-party even when buying from Amazon itself.
manderley··on Skepticism after Windows 10 search failure
But they've just recently, with 1903, revamped Explorer as well as taskbar search.

In general, I find it very hard to believe this is a people few users rely on. It's the primary way to launch programs for me.

manderley··on Apple News No Longer Supports RSS
Ios doesn't support changing default apps. If you get a prompt, it's because that app has independently implemented browser choice. This is also why you can select browsers that aren't installed, because there's no way of checking whether anything's installed.

Were you to use the default mail application, for example, its links would always open in Safari.

manderley··on How to fight back against Google AMP as a web user and a web developer
To me, AMP is annoying because it means I have to make two extra clicks to get the real site to load.
manderley··on India Acknowledges Lunar Lander Crashed
Also, probably because of propaganda.
manderley··on Windows 10 features we're no longer developing
It's already part of Windows, and it's not. But you can bind Snip & Sketch to the Print Screen button in the Ease of Access settings.
manderley··on Twitter account deletions on 'pause' after outcry
It's a Twitter account name. Let's not act like this is some huge imposition.
manderley··on Is It a ‘5’ or a ‘6’? The Answer Could Make an Art Fortune
Or press the pause button before the page finishes loading.
manderley··on Oil Is the New Data
But not as easy for other parties. Maybe that person wants to be able to get a job at other companies in the future and not get pointless hatemail from randos?
manderley··on It's Way Too Easy to Get a .gov Domain Name
... but they would want to get the government, the "gman" involved - so "gmail" fits perfectly!
manderley··on Why are people getting worse at “The Price Is Right”?
This absolutely happens. But after a while, manufacturers increase the size & price at the same time, pointing out the increase in product, of course. None of this is new, it's been happening for decades.
manderley··on Why are people getting worse at “The Price Is Right”?
Tons of sites do variable pricing, especially in the travel sector. Typically discriminating by device, OS etc.

And you'll often get a discount coupon after staying on a shopping site for a few minutes without interacting.

manderley··on Google Kills Cloud Print
Try out the "Mopria print service" (mobile printing alliance), most big manufacturers are part of it. They provide a generic driver app for Android that works for mobile printing with models from multiple manufacturers.
manderley··on Privacy: Is That iPhone?
Why do they have this as the default setting if they have nothing to gain from it?
manderley··on Every American Car Brand Is on the Bottom Half of CR's Reliability Rankings
Lidl is a discount supermarket. It's not about choice, it's about the lowest prices possible with a limited amount of variety available in exchange. There are plenty of other chain supermarkets that have the huge variety of flour (?) you crave.

And "colorful" doesn't mean tasty with produce, unfortunately.

manderley··on Ohio Was Set to Purge 235,000 Voters. It Was Wrong About 20%
Guess what the Republicans eliminated in Ohio a few years ago: Same-day voter registration.
manderley··on How Much Air Pollution Is Produced by Rockets? (2017)
Except speed of light means we'll have to come to terms with the fact we'll never be able to leave. And that's fine.
manderley··on How Much Air Pollution Is Produced by Rockets? (2017)
And what would that get us? A station permanently dependent on getting raw materials from earth. Nothing gained, really - except more pollution on the surface and a habitat really not suited to humans.

We can grow plants on Earth, why would we do it in orbit.

manderley··on How Much Air Pollution Is Produced by Rockets? (2017)
Speed of light being the ultimate barrier and our own solar system being the way it is (ie: no other habitable planets) means we will never be a "multi-planetary species". Being able to leave the planet for some colonization of the universe is a pipe dream, Star Trek is never going to be real.

We'll have to learn to make do with what's on our planet, instead of continuing on the current path in unrealistic hopes of serving on the USS Enterprise.

manderley··on How Much Air Pollution Is Produced by Rockets? (2017)
Considering something like the Concorde wasn't even possible to operate at a profit, I'm very skeptical.
manderley··on How Much Air Pollution Is Produced by Rockets? (2017)
Why? We'll never be able to colonize space, the distances involved are much too large. Even our own solar system we can't really explore.
manderley··on How TikTok censors videos that do not please Beijing
Can't you simply deny TikTok access to shared storage? This permission has been part of Android for a few years now.
manderley··on Don't Let Congress Hand Patent Abusers Their Ultimate Wishlist
"First to invent" doesn't make much sense when the point of the patent system is to get inventors to publicize their inventions in return for a guaranteed monopoly.

"First to invent" runs counter to the patent system.

manderley··on Let's Encrypt makes certs for 30% of web domains
That's due to US sanctions.
manderley··on What Is a Tech Company?
I'd assume that's true of pretty much any car company.
manderley··on What Is a Tech Company?
I consider them to be a "car company", a company that makes and sells cars. Even though technology is involved in producing said cars.
manderley··on US has 501,000 fewer jobs than first reported
The agency was recently moved and lost a huge part of their staff, they're not going to be as competent as they used to be. The same things is happening to the USDA.
