mandelbrotwurst··on The declining U.S. birthrate has implications beyond Social Security
> SS is paid for by higher wages, which happens when there are less workers, not more

SS is paid for by wages in aggregate, not on average.

Either of more workers paying into social security or an increase in average wages (assuming that the increases are below the threshold at which income taxes fund SS) will increase the amount of funds available for SS.

mandelbrotwurst··on King County, WA bans facial recognition software
Would you make a similar argument that allowing the police to track location of all citizens 24/7 is just making the process of having officers follow people around more efficient?
mandelbrotwurst··on Massachusetts Steamship Authority hit by ransomware attack; ferries delayed
How do you know that we’re not less secure?

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if our systems are on average far less secure simply because so much more is online now, to speak nothing of increases in the complexity of and opportunities for errors and misconfigurations in today’s systems.

mandelbrotwurst··on Amazon warehouse injuries '80% higher' than competitors, report claims
Wouldn't increasing your labor costs by 400% outweigh whatever benefit you gain in reducing reported injury rates?
mandelbrotwurst··on Manufacturing the Librem 5 USA Phone in the US
> investing in this means something else can't be invested in

Eh, maybe - often that "something else" is capital sitting on its hands or investing in things that serve to protect its own interests.

mandelbrotwurst··on Homeless Oaklanders were tired of the housing crisis. So they built a village
You’re probably being downvoted because of how you started your comment, directing the person above to not “act like” there aren’t slums elsewhere, despite that being not at all relevant to their comment.
mandelbrotwurst··on Amazon Prime inflates prices, using the false promise of ‘free shipping’
I think it’s that they’re often of lower quality and less durable.
mandelbrotwurst··on Tracking the San Francisco Tech Exodus
How big does a neighborhood need to be / how many should it have?

The neighborhoods in SF as most people think of them are larger than the areas that many suburb residents tend to think of as defining their neighborhoods.

mandelbrotwurst··on Tracking the San Francisco Tech Exodus
Ah OK, gotcha - I misinterpreted your comment as meaning things are fine in the Tenderloin.
mandelbrotwurst··on Tracking the San Francisco Tech Exodus
That's not exactly a high bar
mandelbrotwurst··on I am sick and tired of hearing tech companies complain about developer shortages
> By definition, the market rate should involve zero shortage.

Labor supply isn't perfectly elastic - there are only so many people who are capable of doing a particular job, and it takes time to train more.

On top of that, of the pool of folks who could get trained up, some of them wouldn't be interested in the work at any rate of pay!

mandelbrotwurst··on FiatMarketCap
The person you’re replying to is asking about the source of the values, not their units.
mandelbrotwurst··on FiatMarketCap
Biased in what way?
mandelbrotwurst··on The World Economy Is Suddenly Running Low on Everything
Prevention doesn’t imply anything about its means.
mandelbrotwurst··on Delaying a Covid vaccine’s second dose boosts immune response
Why are you asking this? This seems fairly out of left field.
mandelbrotwurst··on Ask HN: What equipment's/setup do I need to mine Bitcoin at home?
Maybe, that would depend on whether you or your employer is initiating the transaction. It would cost ETH to execute though, yes.
mandelbrotwurst··on Amazon Sidewalk
That’s a great move and I applaud you and also I wonder whether LG would start disabling TVs unable to get their requests through if they noticed a critical mass of them doing that.

“We noticed you’re using an ad-blocker” ...

mandelbrotwurst··on Be in a field where tech is the limit
It's very much a mixed bag.

The "unlimited" thing became popular in California in part as an attempt on behalf of companies to avoid having to issue payouts for accrued time off to employees leaving their organizations.

I'd suggest simply being very up front and specific in interviewing and negotiations about how much time you plan to take and see what kind of reactions you get.

mandelbrotwurst··on California is not in drought
Yeah, I’ve only read part of that book but it’s quite good. There’s also a long PBS documentary based on it that came out in the ‘90s (maybe ‘95?) available on YouTube.
mandelbrotwurst··on A CBP contract shows the risks in connecting your vehicle and your smartphone
Because the goal is as much to collect the location data as it is the tax.
mandelbrotwurst··on Shrinkflation: Costco Paper Towels, Now with 20 Fewer Sheets per Roll (2012)
It’s possible that the person you’re replying to has been shopping at Costco for that amount of time.
mandelbrotwurst··on Labor shortage or terrible jobs?
I won’t argue your overall point but I will point out that the “sweeping and wiping down tables” are the easiest parts of that job and a small fraction of the labor that is done.
mandelbrotwurst··on U.S. Labor Secretary throws support behind classifying gig workers as employees
It might increase fares, although I'm wondering if that effect might be mitigated somewhat as drivers simply move hours worked whatever the cap is to some competing platform like Lyft.

My hope is that we'll eventually get to the point where we'll be able stand up a decentralized alternative that will allow us to cut out the Uber middleman.

mandelbrotwurst··on New evidence that British workplaces are losing viewpoint diversity
How does this relate to the comment that you're replying to?
mandelbrotwurst··on More sleep or more exercise: the best time trade-offs for children’s health
For what it's worth, there are many areas in the U.S. where the infrastructure would reasonably allow for this and it's more a question of whether the parents would allow it. Even where this isn't possible, it's very common for schools to offer buses from extremely near to their homes to the school, which is a process that as you have pointed out, parents do not necessarily need to be involved in.
mandelbrotwurst··on Cheerleader’s Snapchat rant leads to ‘momentous’ Supreme Court case on speech
Your argument would be stronger if you proposed an alternate definition rather than just saying “you’re wrong, that’s not what it means anymore!”
mandelbrotwurst··on Job descriptions should show a salary or salary range
Was he actually doing nothing?
mandelbrotwurst··on Bank of England to explore a potential Central Bank Digital Currency
> in a higher-interest environment you certainly could

Maybe, maybe not - it's possible for interest rates to be high and inflation to be even higher (stagflation).

mandelbrotwurst··on Bank of England to explore a potential Central Bank Digital Currency
1 year CD rates are currently about .65% in the US - well below inflation even if you’re talking Core CPI only.
mandelbrotwurst··on Standard Notes is a safe place for your notes, thoughts, and life's work
Well, unless there are technological improvements in processing speed that allow for future decryption, right?

Food for thought though, for sure.
