malloci··on Jeffrey Epstein: Financier 'found dead in cell' in New York
That’s the very definition of conspiracy:

“a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful.”

malloci··on A personal story about 10× development
> I have yet to met a real developer who when left team/project/job didn't leave a massive trail of destruction

Consider yourself lucky. The ones where this doesn’t happen with are the ones that simply don’t contribute and are somehow allowed to linger with the team. When they leave it’s usually a boost to the teams productivity overall.

malloci··on American tech giants are making life tough for startups
They don’t have to be successful when the mere threat of their entry into a market can be enough to kill off (or suppress) potential competition.
malloci··on Zillow surprises investors by buying up homes
Isn't Amazon's marketplace similar in that regard? They compete with other sellers using Amazon's platform all the time.

Ethically, it seems a bit fuzzy for me given that one of Zillow's big features is there zEstimate. How can they demonstrably prove they aren't tweaking that somehow for their own gain?

malloci··on A Career Cold Start Algorithm
This is an incredibly jaded view. Both cases should be encouraging to anyone in a management position. Spending time to understand the lay of the land shows that the new hire is motivated to learn the system they are working on through the other experts on the team. It shows they care, which is a huge win for any project. If a manager truly took issue with this they shouldn’t be managing. It’s also a clear sign to find something else quickly!
malloci··on Interview: Apple’s Craig Federighi about Face ID
I suspect, in most cases, the police will ask you which pocket your phone is in and fish it out themselves...
malloci··on Redesigning Google News
I have mixed feelings about the ability to block certain sources. On the one hand it's nice to be able to block random blogs or poorly written sources (in the grammatical sense) that somehow make their way into the google news docket. On the other hand, I worry that this will only increase the polarization we're seeing in todays political arena.
malloci··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
While keeping the status green for s3, they have at least put up a notice at the top:

Increased Error Rates

We are investigating increased error rates for Amazon S3 requests in the US-EAST-1 Region.

malloci··on India has banned disposable plastic in Delhi
While I love the idea, I'd much rather see the money required to rollout a national deposit system go to expanding domestic and commercial recycling programs nationally. This includes subsidizing any costs with providing recycling bins as well as building and maintaining sorting centers.
malloci··on Think Strategically About Your Career Development
"A study by Wharton professor Matthew Bidwell showed that external hires into a company get paid 18-20% more than internal workers who are promoted into similar jobs. (Gratingly, they also perform worse for the first two years.) That’s patently unjust, but it points to an important truth: professionals are often taken for granted inside their own organizations."

It always amazes me that this has never been rectified within the corporate culture. Maybe the percentage of employees that look is so low that the risk of losing them isn't worth the cost of proactively keeping them happy with their salary?

malloci··on Hillary Clinton Considered Tim Cook and Bill Gates as Vice President
It might have been one way to sway some Trump supporters to her side.
malloci··on Housing in the Bay Area
However, in those cities you likely wouldn't make the money to afford that $3500/month rent.
malloci··on 3D reproduction of TSA master keys
Bringing up the protection of the nuclear arsenal only enforces the fact that an encryption "master key" controlled by the government isn't such a great idea:

malloci··on Why the US federal employee record breach is worse than others
It's also a way to gauge if you can be black-mailed to leak secrets. If you are open about your dark secrets (e.g., addicted to meth), then the chances of a foreign agency using that information to turn you into an asset are lower so there is still a chance you might get that clearance. If they dig something like that up on their own (which there is a fair chance they will), then you are guaranteed denial since it means you are a higher risk to black-mail as you were not willing to divulge such information.
