malermeister··on Work begins on a $12B high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and Los Angeles
We're building a huge line to connect the Baltics with the rest of the EU rn: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_Baltica
malermeister··on The Resurrection of Rajasthan's Royal Liquors
That's too bad! I love amaros and these sound like a similar thing from a very different background.
malermeister··on The Resurrection of Rajasthan's Royal Liquors
This looks intriguing but it's missing one key information: Where does one actually buy the stuff out here in the west?
malermeister··on I love programming but I hate the programming industry
State-owned companies or worker-owned coops come to mind.
malermeister··on Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince buys local paper, feuds over mansion build
I agree. As I said in another comment I think the solution is to prevent them from getting rich enough to buy government in the first place. Wealth tax the shit out of everything over a few mil.

I mean personally, I'm a straight-up Titoist. I don't think private enterprise should be allowed past small family companies.

But within the capitalist framework that we live in? I think a progressive wealth tax that reaches 100% for everything past a few mil would be reasonable.

malermeister··on Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince buys local paper, feuds over mansion build
Without government, this guy would buy an army of goons to violently force his will on us.

The monopoly on force protects us from billionaires taking over even more than they already have.

At this level of wealth, there is no reason or empathy. It's all ego.
malermeister··on RebornOS: A beautiful user-friendly take on Arch Linux with many desktop options
Thank you for the response! It seems like EndavourOS still is the right middle ground for me then, but I can understand the motivations behind this project better now.

That being said, I'm not sure Arch is the best distro to build a newcomer-friendly version of. The number of times I've had to manually fix stuff after a broken upgrade...

malermeister··on RebornOS: A beautiful user-friendly take on Arch Linux with many desktop options
How is this different from EndeavourOS?
malermeister··on Threads on Mastodon and the bright future of the Fediverse
Panphy looks excellent! It wasn't on my radar yet, thanks for sharing!
malermeister··on British farmers want basic income to cope with post-Brexit struggles
British Farmers shot themselves in the foot, now want others to clean up their mess.
malermeister··on ActivityPub/Nostr/At-Bluesky Compared
You can't even post titties on Facebook/Insta. Big corps are intensely politically motivated, they succumb to American prudery through advertiser pressure.
malermeister··on Transforming of Communist-era apartment blocks that dominate Eastern Europe
Ummm. Because of WW2 and the Nazis waging a war of extermination on the Soviet population?

Many cities were completely reduced to rubble, as were any villages that got in their way. Amsterdam still has their pretty Dutch Golden Age buildings because the war played out very differently there.

malermeister··on Transforming of Communist-era apartment blocks that dominate Eastern Europe
That is exactly the approach the Soviets took when they built these in the first place. They might get a bad rep these days, but commieblocks lifted out millions and millions of people from much worse circumstances.
malermeister··on Government Does Stash Billions of Pounds of Cheese in Missouri Caves
Just looked it up, seems like it's more similar to Emmental.
malermeister··on Government Does Stash Billions of Pounds of Cheese in Missouri Caves
Is "Swiss cheese" the same thing as Gruyere? Cause if so, that stuff is cave-aged in Switzerland as well!
malermeister··on Jon Stewart claims Apple wouldn't let him interview FTC chair on his show
> The complaint specifically calls out Apple's dominance as potentially harmful to speech.

I'm sure this incident helped that perception...

malermeister··on Smoking cannabis is now legal in Germany
The trick is to mix it with (already legal) high CBD/low THC weed, both to just dilute it, but also because CBD counteracts some of the negative side effects of THC, such as paranoia.
malermeister··on Union households tend to have $100k more in wealth than nonunion families
I'm sorry you're choosing to let corporations exploit you instead of fighting with us for better wages. But that's kind of on you, not on us.
malermeister··on Group buys up large tracts of land in Romania to create 'European Yellowstone'
I'm from Vienna. The reason I'm privileged is the legacy of Red Vienna and the Austromarxists, who built the social housing and the modern welfare state that makes Vienna the most livable city in the world.

Your communists sucked, for sure. But that was a personnel issue more than it was an ideological one.

malermeister··on Group buys up large tracts of land in Romania to create 'European Yellowstone'
Because capitalism will get its greedy claws in there one way or another. It's either this or logging operations.

Transylvania is absolutely stunning. There's a trek called the Via Transilvanica that's on my bucket list: https://youtu.be/5gpbns_jqRY?si=TxGZXN6rCH2IQOoM
malermeister··on What Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane
It's almost as if an economic system based on maximizing greed instead of reigning it in was not sustainable or desirable.
malermeister··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
wat?
malermeister··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
There is no "old money" in the US. The country is young enough for all of it to be "new money".
malermeister··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
He's completely destroyed thousands of lives through his actions.
malermeister··on MTA board votes to approve new $15 toll to drive into Manhattan
Skyscrapers do not a city make. NYC has a population of 8.8M. The Randstad has a population of 8.4M.
malermeister··on MTA board votes to approve new $15 toll to drive into Manhattan
The Randstad does.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randstad

Density is pretty similar as well.

malermeister··on Paris preserves its mixed society by pouring billions into public housing
Only an American could make this argument. Vienna tops global comparisons for quality of life all the time. Life expectancy is higher in Austria, as are safety, education standards and all other meaningful indicators.

Who cares about some silly numbers on a bank account? We live good lives.
