makosdv··on Mark Cuban: Why US hospitals "don't know their costs"
Prescriptions
makosdv··on FBI used iPhone notification data to retrieve deleted Signal messages
You can choose what to show in the notification and there is an option to include the message, so I'm guessing that allowed some unencrypted incoming messages to be read.

makosdv··on $2 WeAct Display FS adds a 0.96-inch USB information display to your computer
Yeah, I hope they put displays on more things. The trends are weird though, since some things that used to have displays no longer have them; you have to use the app on your phone instead...
makosdv··on Ask HN: Do you still use a hand held/desktop calculator?
I still have a TI-86 on my desk that I've had since the late 90s. I use it from time to time for calculations.
makosdv··on 10 years after Snowden's first leak, what have we learned?
I would say cronyism rather than capitalism, but I agree about the "ruling class" sentiment.
makosdv··on U.S. workers have gotten less productive – no one is sure why
Yeah, this "new" trend of "quiet quitting" sounds so silly. People have been behaving like that for a very long time and they've probably always done it.
makosdv··on YouTube’s ‘dislike’ barely works according to new study on recommendations
I'm not surprised by this. I gave up on the YouTube Home page, etc. years ago and I only look at the Subscriptions page. I've just found new channels to subscribe to through word of mouth over the years and I have more than enough content to choose from.
makosdv··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
I'm not sure they would work well if you're listening to loud music or something. Personally, I don't think I'd ever buy a car that uses voice control as its primary interface; I greatly prefer physical buttons.
makosdv··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
Yeah, I just replaced mine a couple weeks ago. It wasn't hard, but it wasn't easy either.
makosdv··on 5G is a joke and the iPhone is the well-timed punchline
That's great. 5G can work if it's deployed well and with sufficient capacity. Unfortunately, that's not the case everywhere. For example, there's no 5G in my area at all and even the 4G coverage and speeds suck. Thankfully, in my area, I have 200mbit cable internet and WiFi calling. So to use a cliche: Your mileage may vary...
makosdv··on Ask HN: Why is there no small Android phone?
That's why I stuck with an S4 for so long; there just wasn't a good replacement that met my requirements. I finally got an S10e a couple years ago, which has been pretty good. It's still a little bigger than I would like, but... Many people want the larger phones for various reasons and many others don't seem to care. Those of us who want smaller phones seem to be a minority, so we don't get many options. It's a similar story with headphone jacks...
makosdv··on Firefox Relay
Some probably will.
makosdv··on Is the world economy entering a wage-price spiral?
Exactly, a wage is the price of the labor to perform a specific job and inflation has an effect on all prices, which includes wages.
makosdv··on FCC plans to rein in “gateway” carriers that bring foreign robocalls to US
Whereas I'm on the Do Not Call list as well and get way too many junk calls... so "your mileage may vary"...
makosdv··on 100 Largest Landowners in America
If they included governmental owners, it'd dwarf these private holdings. For example, the largest landowner is really the United States Federal government: 640 million acres.
makosdv··on U.S. Labor Secretary throws support behind classifying gig workers as employees
I feel like we should be trying to phase out this special "employee" classification that the gov't defined instead of expanding it.
makosdv··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
I wish they would enable an advanced mode or something.
makosdv··on Americans Are Using Less Steel, Paper, Fertilizer, and Energy
Luckily, my local Publix that I shop at does it quite well.
makosdv··on YouTube Lets Users Override Recommendations After Criticism
I just flat out stopped using their recommendations a while ago. I only look at my subscriptions feed.
makosdv··on Arabsat-6A mission [video]
Luckily, I heard about it on the radio on the way home from work and got home a couple minutes before the launch, so I could watch it from my front yard.
makosdv··on Continuing our work to improve recommendations on YouTube
This is why I never look at the recommendations on YouTube. I just go straight to my Subscription feed; there is usually something worth watching there and if not, I find my entertainment elsewhere.
makosdv··on Facebook’s Secret Rulebook for Global Political Speech
The thing that troubles me the most is the hubris of Facebook to think that they can even attempt to define and enforce speech codes. It is their site, so they can do what they want, but I can also do what I want and not use it. Given Facebook's massive drop in stock price this year, it seems like their investors think Facebook is following the wrong path as well.
makosdv··on OUC coal plants linked to east Orange County cancer spike, lawsuit claims
Nuclear
makosdv··on New Evidence That Lead Exposure Increases Crime (2017)
Makes sense.

"Lead exposure in childhood linked to lower IQ, lower status jobs, as adults" https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/03/170328145300.h... Which also correlates with criminality.

makosdv··on Microsoft reverts decision to discontinue Skype 7 (Skype Classic) after backlash
Microsoft added a UserVoice forum where we can request and vote for features/changes. https://skype.uservoice.com
makosdv··on The Backpage.com Case Is Testing the Limits of the First Amendment
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." - First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America (1789)
makosdv··on Dev Watercooler: World of Warcraft Classic
A vocal minority of the community was pushing for vanilla. There was a somewhat popular (supposedly 150k active players) vanilla server setup by some people in the community (Nostalrius) that was shut down by Blizzard for copyright infringement. It's hard to say what Blizzard will do after they roll out the vanilla servers. They may create TBC, WotLK, etc. servers, or it may be a dud that they just shut down... I'm sure it will depend on how successful they are and how much effort is required to maintain the servers.
makosdv··on 100 Years Later, the Madness of Daylight Saving Time Endures
There is a bill proposed here in Florida to do just that. We're already in DST 8 months out of the year anyway.
makosdv··on Which job skills are most employable?
>According to this analysis, the most valuable skills could be summed up as “leadership” skills

>What are the most valuable combinations of job skills? >David Deming found that the jobs with the greatest growth in employment were those that required both social and mathematical skills.

I think these are the key takeaways. STEM is very important, but it appears the market is saying we have a lack of leadership skills, which are not really emphasized in a typical education.
