makesthingspos··on Show HN: TablePad, a notepad app for structured data
Nice app.

Features to consider: 1) F2 for editing cell contents 2) tab behavior like Excel where pressing tab on last column wraps to the next line+first column 3) C-; to enter current date.

I did get this error when trying to save or save as on Linux.

I was using file name: "New Table". I did not enter a file extension. I'm not sure what extension TablePad uses.

Hopefully IMDB, Metacritic, Spotify, Amazon, and app stores will also empower users to make their own evaluations unencumbered by mob mentality by removing all metrics from public view.

Can you share the font?

Thanks.

makesthingspos··on Sticker shock over Seattle's new sugary drink tax
In common scenarios this can be a 134-236% tax. Cigarette tax is roughly 50%, Marijuana is roughly 50%, Liquor is roughly 30%.

Common scenarios:

Store brand 2-liter: $0.88, 67 ounces, $0.0175 per ounce, $1.17 in tax, 134% tax.

During all of December, 2-liter Cokes at Walmart in my town in Washington (not sure about Seattle) were $0.95 with $1 off coupon when buying two, this yields the 236% tax rate.

If milk is listed as the first ingredient, it's not taxed. So 1200 calorie milkshakes are a substitute.

makesthingspos··on Since 1700, Wine Glasses Have Gotten 7 Times Bigger
In case it wasn't clear, the sizes/frequency I was referring to is in convenience stores like 7-11, not restaurants etc.
makesthingspos··on Since 1700, Wine Glasses Have Gotten 7 Times Bigger
These cups are not usually labeled with serving information. They don't, for example, have how many calories are in them because they can be filled with a variety of different sodas (some zero calorie).

FWIW, from my perception, the 128 oz is very rare, 64 oz is fairly common but a small percent of sales, and 44 oz is very common. (edit: these are for convenience stores like 7-11, not restaurants etc where sizes are much smaller)

makesthingspos··on Microsoft Intern’s Rape Claim Highlights Struggle to Combat Sex Discrimination
> discouraged drunkenness, discouraged a woman crashing at a male colleague's house instead of being put up in a hotel

Doesn't it seem ridiculous that companies need to have these kind policies or risk lawsuits and being smeared as cultivating a culture of rape? It seems to me that employers shouldn't have to babysit their adult employees or be their parents. Maybe instead of having employers be parents, society could reinforce the idea that parents/family/individuals be responsible. For example, not getting hammered, calling a cab if one can't drive, not going out alone (or as the only female in a group), not staying the night at the home of someone of the opposite sex, not having sex before marriage, courtship is chaperoned, etc. Oh no, how patriarchal! Instead, it's seen as reasonable for one's employer/university/etc to decide if one's sex life is consensual and make sure one has a safe bed to sleep in when one goes out partying!

> discouraged drunkenness

I'm sure this isn't what you meant, but imagine if Microsoft had a policy that punished an employee if they were found to have gotten exceptionally drunk outside work like in this scenario. First, it could only be applied to the accused, never the accuser. Imagine if this purported rape victim were punished because she admits she got very drunk before the rape happened. People would go crazy at that. They'd blame Microsoft for punishing the victim. They'd demand all rape accusers be given immunity from any punishment for misdeeds they did before the purported rape took place, lest the punishment for what they did discourage them from reporting the rape.

Btw, very much enjoyed your thoughtful well-reasoned comments in this thread!

makesthingspos··on Show HN: Shazam-like acoustic fingerprinting of continuous audio streams
Have you thought about doing adblock for podcasts? One couldn't adblock unique reads of ads, but many podcasters read an advertisement once and then include that read in multiple podcast episodes. And there are tons of ads that aren't read by the podcaster and include in multiple episodes.

I figure any block of audio longer than a few seconds that appears in more than one podcast episode could be snipped.

I think it would have to be desktop software since if it were a service and edited the podcast files then it would be copyright infringement. I guess it could be a podcast player and not actually distribute the edited files but just the timestamps to skip ads.

Personally I'd like software I can run over a directory of mp3s that would remove duplicate sections. Any thoughts on feasibility? I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet.

makesthingspos··on How Social Media is Built for Addiction
I don't like how Reddit only shows the user top posts for past 24 hours or past week. It means one can't easily not look at it today and see what one missed today tomorrow.

Web news is generally like this, making it hard to see yesterday's stories today. That's one reason my preferred news source is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Current_events

makesthingspos··on Open Sourcing our new Duckling – Probabilistic Parser Rewritten in Haskell
Can you share any benchmarks between the Clojure and Haskell Duckling? Do you have any between the two before you made algorithmic improvements to the Haskell implementation?

The post says that the main motivation was scaling/performance improvement, yet shares no data about how much of a performance improvement there was.
