makeshifthoop··on Cloud Cost Calculator
The cr1.8xlarge Amazon 3 year heavy utilization should be 660/month with the upfront cost amortized over 36 months.

makeshifthoop··on Decide.com Acquired by eBay
It varies by the company. I did a little bit of research and found this quora article. http://www.quora.com/Mergers-and-Acquisitions-2/For-a-public...
makeshifthoop··on Words that make valid sentences
How would you know if the word combination is a valid sentence? NLTK?
makeshifthoop··on [dead]
works here in SF :)
makeshifthoop··on Rackspace Response to PRISM
Dmitry's followup at the bottom of the page is both insightful and indicative of our nitpicking attitude to this. Is metadata covered under this? How about their routing and network equipment's logs? In the same time, when do we stop asking clarifying questions and arguing about the semantics of the message, a process that might turn into legalese and then lawyers talking to each-other?
makeshifthoop··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (May 2013)
[SEEKING FREELANCER]

We're looking for someone with a bit of technical knowledge and ability to write to write blog posts.

We're a startup that helps app developers make better apps through putting better keywords, app descriptions, titles, etc. We've been maintaining our own blog at http://blog.appstorerankings.net but we haven't gotten to it recently, and would like to get someone to help out with this. Take a quick look at the kind of content we'd written there -- that's the general direction we'd like to write things about.

An ideal person is:

Interested in writing about Apps and the App Ecosystem on Apple and iOS Capable of writing in an interesting and clear manner Knows to do research to fill in gaps in knowledge Has their own blog and blogs regularly (Please submit a link to your own blog, this greatly increases your chances) Enthusiastic about writing and learning!

Thank you!

makeshifthoop··on How Google Compute Engine stacks up to Amazon EC2
So true. I ask a question on the paid support plan and I got an answer copied from a blog I already googled. After several back and forth and escalations, I keep getting the same unhelpful answers and gave up.
makeshifthoop··on Lawmaker says biking bad for the environment
ah thanks for posting the reply.
makeshifthoop··on Show HN: I built a tool to solve App Discovery
What we try to do is show some similar apps that are close to the app you already like and enjoy, and show some apps that are a bit different. So, for example, starting from an XKCD comic app you can get to a Cyanide and Happiness or SMBC Comics app -- but you also can in a few clicks navigate to a 9gag or Reddit app. You're navigating along the web in a direction -- you can start looking at photo apps Pic Collage or at games, etc.
makeshifthoop··on Ask HN: Where do you get ideas to build side-projects?
How about a site to crowdsource side project ideas?

makeshifthoop··on EC2's M3 Instances Go Global; Reduced EC2 Charges and Lower Bandwidth Prices
I wonder how many people actually use the on-demand instances on a regular basis. For me, I purchase reserved instances in the marketplace and I never touch the on demand pricing. The past two price "reductions" have not affected me because the reserved pricing remains the same. For someone who does not want to sign 1/3 year lease, I find spot pricing to be more attractive than on demand. For the small chance that your instance will get terminated, you get to enjoy the same performance at 1/10 the on demand price. What if you need reliability / short term lease? I would use the amazon marketplace and find other people selling their reservation in the 1-11 month range (not guaranteed)
makeshifthoop··on Show HN: Visualizing the iOS App Store via D3.js
nice! We thought about displaying profit from downloads * price but we found that for most of the big apps, they tweak around prices constantly so the profit would vary too much based on when you poll their prices.
