mainecoder··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
from the perspective of an oil company when the price of oil goes up they make more money generally even if they sell less volume, it is in their interest that oil does not become to abundant that the price falls it is in their interest even if the economy suffers since oil is essential to many there will not be other option but to fill gas to go to work and they want to make the most money then even if eventually other energy alternatives start being considered since the executive team things about the bonus this year not next year or they year after that THIS year and what can be done THIS QUARTER
mainecoder··on Why Arab armies don't win wars
it also has to do with military power if I high ranking officer disciplines an officer of lower rank but that lower rank officer is the cousin of so and so, then there is a problem for the high ranking officer, thus a lack of discipline pervades

mainecoder··on German companies rely almost exclusively on AI models and services from the USA
If there was a good EU alternative it may have been used but Mistral was out of the game a long time ago now that does not mean they will close down or will not be profitable so long as they work on regulation and other things like ethics and how good they are for the environment etc some may choose them.
mainecoder··on NüshuRescue: Reviving the Endangered Nüshu Language with AI
the language can be preserved and it will stay in books and documents sort of like the languages of fiction books you can learn the language and speak it but the language is really dead gone and so are many languages in Brazil, Papau New Guinea and other countries in Africa. Language are born, the grow the die so do cultures. This is the last generation of Tribal existence on every major continent
mainecoder··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
This is also supported by the Federal gov since recently power inverters were banned and there is no major US maker of power inverters this is purposely a policy designed to stymie Solar proliferation. This policy was bought and paid for by the energy sector.
mainecoder··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
The problem with Solar is once someone buys it they can continuously use it for a long time with out participating in the economy. That is unacceptable especially from local grid providers and many in the energy sector and since China makes the best solar panels in quality and quantity that will take us maybe more than 3 years to catch up just in quality, it makes them even more bold in not allowing or making it hard for solar to proliferate. The risk is that the cost of energy will be high enough not to make manufacturing and other sector competitive enough but that does not matter as long as energy sector makes money the US can decline the number one goal is each individuals own goal there is no collective goal unless it just happens to be sadly a goal that is shared and individually beneficial.
mainecoder··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Hopefully OpenAI can solve good problems where no one can make a claim that they stole their idea where the methodologies used and the techniques used are so out of the ordinary that the achievement is respected. Furthermore they should work on new novel solution on the old problems to lay these issues rest, thus by improving their models they can avoid issues of academics accusing them of using their work additionally the academics should also demonstrate their unpublished work is significant enough to have solved the problem . This is a bit subjective but it is also objective for the person with domain knowledge.

mainecoder··on Show HN: Phive, a Gomoku-like game to play with friends or solo
Here are my thoughts this is an amazing idea and I can see incredible potential because of its simplicity, I won on beginner one so far please play OPus Magnum by Zactronics for some inspiration this could be more developed. I can see myself playing this with piano music in the background and a story line. Additionally, when it start it does not have to start from zero you can add puzzles where a play was already happening and you are trying to win to make it more challenging. PLease talk to people with Game design experience and puzzle solvers. Awesome job
mainecoder··on Larry Ellison: "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re recording"
It is often commented how people who know they are recorded behave a certain way what is not commented on is how people who know they are recording other people behave. When you see your screen and you know you are recording them it creates this "power trip" it's feeling some of us know and love, but when we truly know it we don't love it anymore it's almost like a drug the high feels good the consequences are for others but that little guilt that lingers we don't like that. Now scale it at the size of an organization, the power trip with other people feel even more better, and the consequences ... well

mainecoder··on A message from President Kornbluth about funding and the talent pipeline
yeah are you saying society does not have a job for an MIT graduate ? this is mistaken let them learn don't worry they'll find a job thank you for thinking about the job prospects for them since you know better than someone who got admitted to graduate school.
mainecoder··on A message from President Kornbluth about funding and the talent pipeline
No this is not good for the World in case you have forgotten America is part of the world and though I hate what is happening just as much as anyone I will work to make this nation better. We are in a tough time and I genuinely do not know if things will get better but we will try.
mainecoder··on The Rich and Powerful Want to Live Forever. What If They Could?
name 3?
mainecoder··on Friendship Recession
Especially Post-Covid it is made more worse, also from there is reason to believe more men are lonelier than ever since in general women have more friends than men when there is a friendship recession the men you had 2 or 1 friend will be alone. The lack of third places is another commonly cited reason this is especially true in the US where any place to hang out is optimized to get your money and get you the F*@# out. Additionally, there is also a class thing in the US people not working "corporate" jobs like those in retail/walmart hourly workers are doing overtime or tired to do other things. This is also responsible partly for the current "gender war" the lack of intermingling of men and women in groups if there are not men groups and women groups there will not be this mixed group thus it's not even an us vs them its me vs him , me vs her .... Birth rates are down things are going bad and now using falling birth rates as a reason they want to restrict the rights of women in the US, a deliberate calculated effort is underway with funding political lobbying, policy prescriptions etc the ultimate goal is control they don't give a damn about falling birth rates or gender relations or women or men for that matter.
mainecoder··on Amazon rewards loyal Kindle devotees by closing the book on old e-readers
This is why having the actual pdf is better, if you can't have it offline you don't own it digitally, if you can't give it to another person or copy it or modify it then you don't own it to it simply attached to your account even with offline access.

mainecoder··on The Military Almost Got the Right to Repair. Lawmakers Just Took It Away
What will happen when the greed of defense companies outweighs the needs of the country for defense? can the defense companies continue overcharging the US government and being drunk on their profits lag behind and lagging behind lobby for the requirements of the US military to be out of date(which is already happening as we see requirements persist that still look like they are from the 1970s in an era where low cost drones, and cheap loitering munitions do not exist, era only way to track a fighter jet is long range radar that distributed camera and ir camera tracking does not exist that fighter jets have true stealth.)and once that lobby works they become over budget and late on delivering on those requirements. This thinking that the defense companies can slumber and we will still be ok is erroneous and will result in us getting humbled in the conflicts to come (having nukes will not make us impervious)
