maherbeg··on JEP 450: Compact Object Headers
Java has just been on a roll with such substantial changes to fundamental pieces of the runtime! Great work to the teams that keep making improvements in backwards compatible manners.
maherbeg··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
What are they netbooting from? Presumably there's a root device somewhere?
maherbeg··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
If you ever get a chance, a blog post about the build, software, and pitfalls would be awesome. I'm thinking about building something like this as our toddler gets older and we start to do longer day outings in a wagon.
maherbeg··on IKEA Redesigns Its Bestsellers
I had a billy book case and poang chair for almost 30 years. I moved it from my childhood homes to my apartments across multiple states.
maherbeg··on Sandy Munro Talks Battery Battles, Calls Solid State “Kiss of Death” for Gas
These high density batteries are going to allow you to have the same range with fewer batteries. Most Americans will find an upper bound of 500 miles to be pretty reasonable for a car. Most American's don't drive 500 miles per day and thus won't be charging a full battery pack every day.

You should consider upgrading your car solely for the fact that newer cars are significantly safer in crashes.

maherbeg··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
F1 has gotten further and further away from production deployment vehicles in favor of more entertainment for the crowds. Tires all degrade to enable more strategy, and the ground effect cars are now designed for closer racing which production vehicles don't care about. Le Mans has more production relevance than F1 now.
maherbeg··on ChatGPT could cost over $700k per day to operate
Github CoPilot will probably be a significant fraction of this.
maherbeg··on U.S. proposes 56% vehicle emissions cut by 2032, requiring big EV jump
I'm a huge fan of the 15 minute city. It's a bit hard to retrofit that into existing sprawling cities. One avenue I'm excited about in places like Austin is building dense mixed use development areas like https://brodieoaksredevelopment.com/ which turns a massive strip mall into a much denser area as a destination.

This then makes it feasible to build public transit between these areas and start building things up along those transit lines.

maherbeg··on I fixed a parasitic drain on my car in 408 days
Well this is entertaining. Our 2012 Mazda CX-7 seems to die if we don't drive it for a week. I've sort of ignored this problem but now I'm going to go check some fuses and see if this is the same problem.
maherbeg··on Europe drastically cut its energy consumption this winter
What's the insulation and air sealing opportunity like in Europe? I wonder how much of a permanent reduction can be done with retrofits for places that haven't had them done yet.

What plugins do you miss in particular? I'd be curious how much of a delta it would be to getting to exactly what you needed.
maherbeg··on Post-GPT Computing
An easy way to solve some of the problems of employment are to start reducing what "full time hours" means. With this first wave of LLMs, we can start decreasing down to 35hours. With the next wave, maybe we move down to 30 hours.

Once we can send LLMs to meetings with each other, we can move down to 15 hours of purely joyful work :-D

maherbeg··on Home Prices Fell in February for First Time in 11 Years
Have there been any attempts to modify Prop 13 to a homestead exemption over time? It seems like it should be relatively straight forward to start narrowing it down bit by bit.
maherbeg··on A year from quitting my full-time PM job – what I miss the most
Yeah, that can definitely be hard to fill if you have no other obligations. If you have a family though, opening up 40 hours a week for your own personal fulfillment is pretty incredible.

maherbeg··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
We just went through this process of it not connecting just perfectly enough, and then not being able to easily disconnect it afterwards.
maherbeg··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
In North America, I believe it's the Type 1 connector.
maherbeg··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
Also, the Tesla connector is just so much better than the CCS connectors in North America. It feels so seamless to get it connected to the car and feel like you have a solid connection.
maherbeg··on Tesla to open some superchargers to other vehicles
I've been a model 3 owner for 4+ years and have cross country road tripped multiple times. The charging infrastructure for Tesla is just consistently reliable and continually getting better. Sometimes we ran into a charger stall not working, but most stations had lots of stalls that we could retry at a different one.

The consistency of non-Tesla chargers is pretty poor and really puts a damper in the potential growth of the EV market. We went through an annoying charging fiasco at a chargepoint station that I'm not sure how non-technical people would get past. Additionally, the next day the EA station we needed to goto ended up being completely down!

maherbeg··on So what’s next (personal news from developer of popular CoreJS polyfill)
He should 100% try to find regular sustainable work somewhere instead of working on this project.

Secondarily, find a lawyer to write up a contract for $80/hr for companies to sign and have him do work on core-js when they need an update or a feature. He can give an estimate on hours, send them a contract, get it signed and have the work done. If the people asking for feature requests and updates don't want to pay, then that's fine, it doesn't need to get done.

maherbeg··on Project Sunroof
I don't think the map sources it uses have been updated in a long time. We've had a tree removed from the front of our house 2 years ago that clearly shows up in the map.
maherbeg··on Why the conventional wisdom on how to grow muscles is wrong
While I have Rogue stuff, I think the REP Fitness racks and benches end up being a better deal for what you get quality wise.
maherbeg··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
It's sad that people assume density must mean mega cities instead of gentle density like Paris suburbs. You could double the Bay Area's density by approving duplexes, fourplexes, and sixplexes + a few more more apartment buildings.

All of these can look like they fit in the neighborhood too quite easily.

maherbeg··on Microsoft Transitions U.S. FTEs to “Discretionary Time Off”
The only way to make this actually work is to also impose a minimum time off for everyone. So everyone has to take at least 2-3 weeks off per year in total.
maherbeg··on Meta CTO told employees higher headcount resulted in 'untenable' slow movement
This is an org structure problem not a headcount problem. No team is empowered to make changes without 5 other teams' approval.
