magicfractal··on Coronavirus: Spain to keep registry of those who refuse Covid vaccine
Should be pretty simple to me: if one doesn’t take the vaccine and passes covid to someone else and this person comes to die it is manslaughter. Folks are putting others in risk by not taking the vaccine.
magicfractal··on What I wish someone had told me about tensor computation libraries
Probably they’re afraid because it might be related to their day job :/
magicfractal··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
Could you share a bit about your picture gallery?
magicfractal··on Tesla’s Neural Processor In The FSD Chip
Do you know where is the presentation video?
magicfractal··on Map Shows Millions of Acres of Lost Amazon Rainforest
The only solution is a massive embargo on products that are causing deforestation (eg Ipe hardwood, soy, cattle) until there’s a system of tracking where these are coming from in whole supply chain with international verification.

The future of the amazon forest cannot depend on governments such as Bolsonaro’s that are clearly anti-science and anti-environment.

magicfractal··on San Francisco's Ambitious Plan to Tackle School Segregation Made It Worse
As someone who’s not in the US, can someone enlighten me why there’s such a difference in school level in san francisco in the first place? If the schools have a similar budget shouldn’t they be pretty much the same?
magicfractal··on KaiOS – A Smartphone Operating System
Can I install it on a phone?
magicfractal··on Message encryption a 'problem' – UK home secretary
If something decreases the power of the state (e.g. Encryption) you can bet state officials will be against it.
magicfractal··on Silicon Valley Censorship
Decentralized services is the only way to have the public discourse owned by the public. We should take the matter into our own hands, use technology to solve this issue and stop entrusting these big corporations to defend our free speech rights because it's clear they're more worried about profits for the next quarter than supporting the environment that allowed their rise in the first place.
magicfractal··on Jack Ma: 'If trade stops, war starts'
Do you think that the next generations, surviving in a post-apocalyptic irradiated world, will care about the reasons that took us to war? Is there anything that is worth the death of hundreds of millions of people? Because that's what you're advocating by saying we should go to war, throwing this word lightly like if there would be a future after war between major powers in the nuclear age.
magicfractal··on GIMP developer looking for funding
Pippin is a extremely competent programmer and has been commited to GIMP and GEGL for a long time. I just signed up for a monthly contribution and I believe it's a great way to support the development of free software for graphics.
magicfractal··on Why 30 is the decade friends disappear
I thought it was interesting that all the match making apps for friends mentioned are for women to make friends with other women. I wonder if guys are just too proud for this.
magicfractal··on Moving 12 years of email from GMail to FastMail
Probably a dumb question, but if I have a @gmail.com email, there's anyway of redirecting that to another email provider without it touching google's servers? (i.e. Without just using automatic e-mail forwarding).
magicfractal··on Riffle: an efficient communication system with strong anonymity
It would be nice to understand on a high level how it compares with other systems for the non-experts.
magicfractal··on Google Fined in Peru for Ignoring the “Right to Be Forgotten”
I don't know what to think of this... On one side it makes sense that the person who was acquitted of a crime shouldn't have their name in the mud for a lifetime. At the same time, the internet is a powerful tool for keeping government in check in Latin America and the political stabilishment there will definitely use this to censor information that is against their interests like what has always happened with the traditional media.
magicfractal··on Why Britain Left
The author is comparing the more than 5 million undocumented families already living in the United States and participating in the social fabric for decades while having their humans rights denied (the right to work) with syrian refugees going to Germany, they're nothing alike. Making these comparisons only strengthens the discourse of the likes of Trump.
magicfractal··on The DAO as a lesson in decentralized governance
Can somebody explain in simple words what urbit is? I just couldn't figure it out from the website.
magicfractal··on Espressif Releases ESP8285
This is pretty interesting! Do you know if it supports SSL on the ESP8266?
magicfractal··on Why Online Voting Is a Danger to Democracy
It enables candidates purchasing votes
magicfractal··on End Geoblocking
Geoblocking is economic segregation of knowledge and culture based on luck (if you had the luck of being born on a country with high material standards and strong currency).

Free flow of information is one of the easiest ways we can reduce the global wealth inequality gap and have a more stable society.

magicfractal··on Why U.S. Infrastructure Costs So Much
Or let's do it like a bunch of other countries: children have the reaponsability of taking good care of the books and pass them to the next generation at the end of their class. It's a great way of teaching respect for the public good.

A yet better way would be to have these books as open-source and anyone is able to print them at their homes/public livrary/etc.

magicfractal··on A Deep Learning USB Stick
You guys know if the Myriad V2 processor is locked (just neural networks) or it will be programmable?
magicfractal··on Steam now accepts Bitcoin for purchases
How would the DRM zone controls Steam currently have work with this? Before, you needed to have a credit card of the country you're buying the game from.
magicfractal··on Atari co-founder: mobile games make me want to throw my phone
This thread has been great for finding good non-IAP-driven games!
magicfractal··on Wikimedia removes the Diary of Anne Frank due to copyright law
That's barbaric. That's why civil disobedience is the only adequate answer to the current overreach of copyright in the united states. It's up to us, technologists, to create and disseminate tools to help out in the dismantlement of an absurd system that is obsolete in the digital age.
magicfractal··on Sandstorm App Market
Please please do an ARM release for the raspberry pi :D
magicfractal··on PowerVR GPUs: Tile-based rendering explained
I wonder how tiled GPUs will perform compared to "traditional" ones considering that resolution in mobile phones is increasing so much, so the size of the tile (in the case for PowerVR, 32x32) gets dwarfed by the total resolution and I guess on-chip memory is very expensive.

I mean, if the tile size was 1x1 we can see it wouldn't be efficient, so how the architecture will keep up with this trend?
