magicbuzz··on Illegal Production and Use of Banned CFC-11 in China's Foam Blowing Industry
See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Under_the_Dome_(film) for China’s inability to regulate their out of control pollution.
magicbuzz··on The Computer Language Benchmarks Game
For speed, Lua code should be run in Luajit.
magicbuzz··on Children Beating Up Robot Inspires New Escape Maneuver System (2015)
A 2008 survey indicated that nine out of ten British children were able to identify a Dalek correctly.
magicbuzz··on Ask HN: How do you send email in your early stage startup?
I think an SMTP setup would be overly complex. I setup a Lua-based mail sender in nginx for a startup a few years back that just sent to gmail iirc. But that now seems a bit too much effort. SendGrid seems interesting as you can setup templates and then just make a Rest API call.
magicbuzz··on Roadmap to becoming a React developer in 2018
Everyone quotes “the standard” as what they do. CSS is probably the one area where there is no consistency in how it is handled in React.
magicbuzz··on Roadmap to becoming a React developer in 2018
Actually, no. I started working in React about two years ago and if anything, I think the ecosystem in the OP map has stabilised somewhat. I think that SASS use is starting to fade and grid layout is now a thing but not like the whole gulp to grunt to webpack thing. Plus create-react-app makes starting easier.

What frustrated me is that management had no idea of all the bases you needed to cover and expected me to be a backend dev and performant in Java, Spring, Elasticsearch and a whole variety of other things in Java land.

magicbuzz··on Ask HN: What is the best cloud region to serve Japan and Australia?
You won’t get low latency in Australia without having a server somewhere in the country, usually Sydney. If you’re using https, TLS has a number of round trips to complete handshaking and users will see a lot of benefit from lower latency.
magicbuzz··on In Chile, border collies are sowing seeds, bringing life back to forests (2017)
I’ve met people on long distance hikes who could do 30km a day. 3km per day seems very little.
magicbuzz··on H3: Uber’s Hexagonal Hierarchical Spatial Index
Very interesting. At a glance, the binding libs seem to transform from lat/lon to a hex index. For storage then, conceivably you would just index by hex and transform lat / loc queries to hex on the fly.

Also, it seems there is no map data attribution for Australia. I doubt Uber built their own maps.

magicbuzz··on A first look at Ubuntu desktop metrics
I’m not too surprised by the relatively strong showing of 128GB memory. I’ve worked with scientific datasets where the primary constraint was always memory. So we would always be chasing motherboards with the most memory support, and with such a machine around why not have it as your desktop :-)
magicbuzz··on A first look at Ubuntu desktop metrics
It’s also an app issue. I run a 4K monitor on Ubuntu and the majority of apps take the entire screen when they start or open a window. And in many apps I have to tweak things so it becomes readable.
magicbuzz··on PostgreSQL Features You May Not Have Tried but Should
It seems to me then that with a carefully thought out inverted index and using the trigrams mentioned above, you could go a long way towards having the capability of the Lucene-based implementations like Elasticsearch and Solr.
magicbuzz··on PostgreSQL Features You May Not Have Tried but Should
Interesting that there is inverted index support (ie GIN). Elasticsearch seems to make a big thing of using inverted indices.
magicbuzz··on Accelerate large-scale applications with BOLT
Could this conceivably be used to speed binaries like nginx? I tend to compile nginx on my systems as over time there are always custom modules I want to add/modify anyway.
magicbuzz··on Uber is experimenting with letting riders wait longer for a cheaper fare
That mindset has made flying in the US the experience it is today.
magicbuzz··on On the Sad State of Macintosh Hardware
Meanwhile, PC laptops are now available with 128GB of RAM.
magicbuzz··on Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying (1944)
In my bookshelf. I think that the most fundamental statement in Stick & Rudder is that you are flying a Wing. And a Wing is something that is inherently non-intuitive to most human beings.
magicbuzz··on How the gig economy is making life harder for North American workers
Factor in wear and tear on the seats/interior as well, that driving aro7nd by yourself wouldn’t normally occur (unless you have kids)
magicbuzz··on The Egg (2009)
Agreed. And the story was well-written. It takes time for people to appreciate that their mother and father is them as well.
magicbuzz··on Spend analysis of 6 years, 686 rides, and $12k spent on Uber (2017)
They can hold up really well. However you’ll find that generally the economy of a newer car is staggeringly better.
magicbuzz··on Spend analysis of 6 years, 686 rides, and $12k spent on Uber (2017)
I thought that was Bloke 101. Actually, the hardest part is getting the lugnuts off. When your tyres were fitted, they likely used air tools to put the nuts back on. I’ve found you always need to ensure you can remove them with the spare hand tool later - otherwise you may end up with a flat somewhere and be unable to remove the wheel.
magicbuzz··on Spend analysis of 6 years, 686 rides, and $12k spent on Uber (2017)
Compare this to free public transit in some European cities
magicbuzz··on Traditional TV Is in Trouble
What exactly would ‘amazing encounters’ encompass? :-)
magicbuzz··on Traditional TV Is in Trouble
Depends a lot on the person. I see a lot of 60+ year olds watching TV but younger tech-savvy 50 something’s watch TV substantially less or not at all. I have a TV - only gets turned on for elections, major political announcements or certain annual sporting events.

My teen years were in the early 80s and TV was simply the prime source of media at that time. My family religiously watched the national news at/before dinner. My parents still have that habit - but they’ve learned to record it and zip thru ‘crap’. Sometimes they now zip thru 30 minutes in a couple of minutes.

It also seems that the quality of the content has massively declined. On the rare occasion I am waiting somewhere and there is a TV on, I’ve been stunned by how low quality some of the advertising is - poorly produced voice overs that would have been inconceivable in the 80s.

I’ve met a few people who have their TV on all the time. I have never formed a positive opinion of people who have that habit.

magicbuzz··on Man Allegedly Used Change of Address Form to Move UPS Headquarters
Laughable that he could do this!
magicbuzz··on Show HN: How to Tune a Guitar
If the string is sharp, sometimes you can just pull on it and the strings tuning will become flatter, sometimes exactly what you want.
magicbuzz··on Tesla First Quarter 2018 Update [pdf]
Model 3 has a larger market share in the US now than BMW 3 series? That seems to be what the graph for April says...
magicbuzz··on Airlines propose long list of rules to kill or revise
I am always just stunned about how ppl in the US fly mostly without luggage checked in because there are so many disincentives to do so.
magicbuzz··on Cities and Ambition (2008)
What are the 'play music' cities in the world? There was some commentary about Atlanta in the discussion.
magicbuzz··on Cities and Ambition (2008)
That's really interesting. As a budding guitarist, I've often wondered what are the 'music' cities in the US and around the world.
