magicbuzz··on Warp – Mobile VPN
I stepped thru getting some Ubuntu systems using 1.1.1.1 for DNS but retaining DHCP otherwise. Looks like this is tricky to do but some new features came in with a netplan package update that allows this to be done easily in 19.04:

Different strokes for different folks - and he is certainly different. I have fantasised for years about doing my dev work away from a desk. So maybe it’s just me but I find his ‘walking desk’ fascinating and thought provoking.

magicbuzz··on Is front-end development having an identity crisis?
I don’t inherently disagree with you but you’re not recognising that as tech evolves, you’re asking people to span an extraordinary amount of complexity. In fact, the premise of the article is that front end development is now essentially two different roles.
magicbuzz··on Is front-end development having an identity crisis?
Technology evolves. As it evolves, it becomes more sophisticated and the roles themselves become more specialised.

Twenty years ago you could have a designer writing simple HTML/CSS pages and then a Java developer filling in the functionality with JSP pages.

Today, the advent of sophisticated frameworks like React, and the browser becoming a highly capable development platform, it makes perfect sense to identify a separation of design-oriented UI/UX developer roles who are presentation experts and more engineering-oriented devs who focus on immutable state stores, app architecture, API design, implementation performance, testing, etc.

We really need good names for these two roles.

magicbuzz··on What the 1949 film Twelve O’Clock High still tells us about air combat
I haven’t seem the film, but I will try to find it.

It’s good that some historical remnant - the control tower -remains. In NE Australia, there were a huge number of airfields that many hundreds of B-25s and other aircraft flew out from on missions to distant Pacific islands and back again. There is almost nothing remaining of that history as landing strips became roads or crops were grown over them.

magicbuzz··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
Agreed. For a long termer, you need to make a 5-6 month full time investment in learning the language. From then on, being immersed means you’re gradually improving and your options and understanding of the everyday expands considerably.

From the article:

Australia’s population has grown by 45% since 1991. No other country even comes close.

There is nothing like masOS. But there certainly are alternatives to MacOS. One of which starts with L.
magicbuzz··on My dad’s resume and skills from 1980
Is it reasonable to expect a web developer to be able to configure nginx? To be honest, I guess maybe not. But the person in question was maintaining how https slowed all sites down and so should be avoided. When I questioned him about the new handshaking in TLS1.3, it became evident he didn’t know what I was referring to.
magicbuzz··on My dad’s resume and skills from 1980
Looks like your Dad got exposure to IBM equipment and realised that being a programmer could be a good job. I did my undergrad in the early 80s and the Uni had a CDC which was old then. First assignment in Pascal was writing it on a punchcard machine and handing the card batch over. But it was more an exercise in showing new students what had come before. I was fortunate to get a job working in COBOL on HP, which led to Unix exposure. Working on an IBM 370 would mean you were unlikely to move out of COBOL/Fortan for a while. Web dev is an awesome beast compared to what existed in the 80s but the complexity has gone up incredibly. Resultantly, there are a lot of people who struggle to understand the fundamentals. I met a supposed web dev the other day who didn’t know what TLS was, let alone the difference between 1.2 and 1.3

magicbuzz··on Angst Swells as Australian Population Nears 25M
It can be simply achieved via income tax change. There’s already a tax rebate depending on the degree of ‘remoteness’. But it’s a political hot potato because the majority of the population lives in three cities.
magicbuzz··on Angst Swells as Australian Population Nears 25M
To clarify, there is actually a significant drought occurring at present.

There’s not actually that much of a safety net. And the figures quoted below are largely unchanged 4 yrs later.

https://www.smh.com.au/opinion/miserly-newstart-keeps-unempl...

I think the real issue with sustained high levels of immigration is that most immigrants end up living in one of two major cities, Sydney or Melbourne. Melbourne is on track to have a London-sized population by mid-century - but that’s of course based on estimates. Which as the article points out, were completely wrong by three decades in 2005.

magicbuzz··on Farewell, Google Maps
If you read the original article, it gives you the impression that it's tiles only. But as you point out it's a lot of different parts of the Maps service going up by usually an order of magnitude at least.

I run a geocoding service for Australia specifically (https://geocodeplus.com.au) and a lot of people I talk to are completely unaware that they're going to see a x10 change in what their forward/reverse geocoding is going to cost them.
